Today’s Liturgical Music: The Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary
Time (Year B)
Opening Voluntary: Shepherd of Souls (Wilbur Held)
Entrance An@phon (Richard Rice)
Entrance Hymn: 437 At the Lamb’s High Feast We Sing (Salzburg)
Gloria & Mass Ordinary: Mass in Honor of St. Benedict (Robert LeBlanc)
Responsorial Psalm & Gospel Acclama@on (Owen AlstoJ)
Offertory Hymn 746 Shepherd of Souls, Refresh and Bless (St. Agnes)
Communion An@phon (Richard Rice)
Communion Hymn: 512 East This Bread (Taize Community)
Recessional Voluntary: Veni Creator Spiritus (Wilbur Held)
As we con1nue our walk through these “Bread of Life” Sun-
days, the scriptures are amplified by today’s hymns. At
communion, we sing music and text by the French Taize
Community, an ecumenical ins1tute that aJracts thousands
each year to experience prayer with extended periods of
silence, long periods of medita1ve song, and a rich sensory
experience of candles and icons. Like many Taize chants,
“Eat This Bread” is a perfect example of “paperless music” -
a refrain that can be memorized by the congrega1on, alter-
na1ng with the cantor’s verses. “At the Lamb’s High Feast”
is the tradi1onal Vespers (Evening Prayer) hymn for Low
Sunday (the Sunday aPer Easter) to Ascension Day.
“Shepherd of Souls, Refresh and Bless” is the work of James
Montgomery, a 19th century writer of 400 hymns. The
prelude to the Mass (based on the melody of “Shepherd of
Souls”) and the recessional (based on a hymn to the Holy
Spirit) were composed by Wilbur Held (1914-2015), long-
1me organ professor at the Ohio State University and or-
ganist of Trinity Church next to the Statehouse.

UPCOMING SPECIAL COLLECTIONS:
August 4/5: The Collection for the Church in Latin America.
For many in Latin America and Caribbean, rural terrain and a
lack of ministers are obstacles to practicing their faith. Your
support to the collection provides lay leadership training,
catechesis, priestly and religious formation, and other pro-
grams to help share our faith with those who long to hear
the Good News of Christ. To learn more, please visit www.usccb.org/latin-america.
Throughout August: A special envelope for the St. Vincent
de Paul Society is included in August’s packet, taking the
place of envelopes that used to appear in the pews. Please
deposit your donation in the regular weekly offertory bas-
ket. This envelope appears on the even months of the year.
August 11/12: St. Vincent de Paul Society members will be at the doors of the church begging alms for our poor and

Saint Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church August 5, 2018 ~ The 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time
Saint Thomas Parish has offered funeral luncheons for
the bereaved for many years. We are currently in need
of a coordinator/s for this important outreach. If you
have a knack for organizing group meals and are
available during the day, please consider this ministry.
A “call list” of volunteers is able to donate side dishes;
the coordinator would obtain a main dish and facilitate
set up, service, and clean up in Rosary Hall. Supplies are
provided by the parish. Please contact Christopher
Urbiel at [email protected] or 740-
453-3301, extension 122, or if you are interested.

CHURCH ORGAN
TOUR OFFERED:
Have you ever wondered how a pipe organ works? We
are blessed to have a versa1le organ with a long history,
provided and maintained by your generosity. Designed
in 1912, given a new console in 1928, and rebuilt and
enlarged in 1988, our worship has been enriched by this
instrument. Join Director of Music & Liturgy Christopher
Urbiel in the choir loP aPer a Mass on August 18 or 19
for a peek at what makes the organ “1ck” and a
demonstra1on of its special sounds. Explore how, in the
words of Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, “the manifold
possibili1es of the organ in some way remind us of the
immensity and the magnificence of God.” To take the
tour, simply come upstairs aPer a Mass that weekend.
JOIN OUR ‘POP-UP’ CHOIR:
The choir season will begin aPer Labor Day. We
welcome all who plan to return to the choir and those
who would like to try singing in the choir for the first
1me. Un1l then, everyone is invited to join us on August
12 in the Choir LoP at 10 a.m. for an opportunity to meet
one another and rehearse a bit together - and then sing
together at the 11 a.m. Mass as an “instant choir.” We
will offer the same opportunity again on August 26.
This is an informal and fun way for all to get a feel for
the choir’s du1es and to share ideas regarding the fall
schedule. If you have served as a cantor here before,
you are also encouraged to come to one or both Sundays
so that Director of Music & Liturgy Christopher Urbiel
can meet you and get to know your interests/availability
going forward.

nent, or Resident Educator) or be eligible to obtain one
before beginning to teach.
All candidates for both posi1ons must submit to a back-
ground check and aJend "Protec1ng God's Children"

Religious educa1on classes at Saint Thomas Aquinas are
held on Sundays through the school year for students
kindergarten (5 years old) through 8th grade from 9:30 -
10:45 a.m. The catechists help parents hand on the
Catholic Faith to their children. Students prepare for the
Sacraments of Reconcilia1on, First Holy Communion, and
Confirma1on, along with learning the Catholic faith and
developing a rela1onship with Jesus Christ. We ask that
children begin by first grade, in order to be prepared to
receive their First Holy Communion and Reconcilia1on
in the second grade. Further, candidates seeking to
celebrate Confirma1on are to aJend seventh and eighth
grade CCD. Students aJending Bishop Fenwick School
need not aJend CCD but are welcome. Registra1on

August 18-19 to par1cipate in our Annual Missionary co-
opera1on Plan. He will preach at all of the Masses and
make an appeal on behalf of the Vincen1an Missions.
Offerings received will help the missionaries to face the
enormous challenges in bringing food, shelter, educa1on
and most importantly the Gospel message to the poor in
their missions in India and Nepal. The proceeds from the
appeal will also help provide training and forma1on for
their seminarians and support their missionaries and the
missionary apostolate.
