To the 2012‐2013 5th Grade Class and Parents,  

  I hope this letter finds everyone doing well and very excited to start reading when the summer begins.  We are going to do something a little different this time around.  I have hand picked a few titles that you MUST read this summer and do the following assignment on looseleaf.  Pretend you are a book critic and write a book review for a newspaper. Include the name of the book, its author, something about the main characters, plot, setting, and conflict.  Do not reveal the ending, but tell me your opinion of the book and the author’s writing.  Be sure to back up your opinion with specifics from the book.  This paper should be a minimum of three paragraphs, either handwritten or typed.  I will be looking for correct grammar, punctuation and smooth paragraphs that make sense. 

Further, I have made a long list of optional books that might also spark your interest during the long summer days.  The challenge is that you wear out that library card and read at least 10 books altogether.  For the optional books, on a piece of looseleaf, write the title, author and a paragraph explaining why you did or didn’t like the book with a parent signature confirming that you read it.  We will have a celebration in the beginning of the year for those students who read at least 10 books.  Rules: 

1. You should be reading books that you have never read before. 2. You know your ability and interest level, and so do we.  Don’t read books that are short or 

easy just to get them done! 3. If a book is too hard or doesn’t make sense, put it down and find something more 

appropriate to you!  Don’t worry if some of your friends are reading a book that is too challenging for you.  Keep reading on your level and you’ll be able to handle that book soon enough! 

4. Reading is about gaining knowledge, opening up your imagination, escaping to another world, etc.  Do just that!!
