SUMMATIVE ASSESSEMENTABCDFAs we stated earlier, summative assessment is usually associated with letter grades.Summative assessment uses a variety of tasks, such as papers and projects, as well as quizzes and tests, to measure student learning. This usually takes place at the end of a chapter or lesson unit.Grades are the primary motivating factor when summative assessment guides classroom instruction.NEXT

SUMMATIVE ASSESSEMENT

NEXTBACKSummative assessment is usually associated with teacher-centered classrooms.Teachers stand in front of the classroom and lecture to students on the material they are to learn.MEASURING STUDENT PERFORMANCE1968: Benjamin Bloom published Learning for Mastery and took up the terms formative and summative assessment.Summative evaluation measures whether or to what degree a student has mastered what they have been taught after a particular lesson, chapter, unit, etc., usually in the form of a test.Formative evaluation measures learning as it is taking place to help guide the student and measure their understanding during the process. They defined as summative evaluation tests those assessments given at the end of units, mid-term and at the end of a course, which are designed to judge the extent of students learning of the material in a course, for the purpose of grading, certification, evaluation of progress or even for researching the effectiveness of a curriculum. 1971: publishes Handbook of Formative and Summative Evaluation with Thomas Hasting and George MadausThey stated assessment is only formative if it is used to alter subsequent educational decisions. In other words, it does not measure student achievement, but rather the effectiveness of curriculum and instruction.NEXTBACK
