1966 First lecturer (Trevor Buchner) appointed

1967 First intake of students to Civil and Structural Engineering courses

1968 First Head of School (George Haggarty) appointed

1970 School of Civil Engineering created. Sandwich Program commenced (6 year course)

Mid 1970s Massive growth in staff and equipment - Federal funding. (Class sizes 30 – 50)

1976 Postgraduate courses and Master of Engineering by thesis introduced

1979 Civil Engineering moved into Level 5 of Building 2

1980 First female students commenced. First overseas student graduated. (Some first year classes – 80)

1981 Ken Faulkes, the second Head of School appointed. Commenced a course review.

Women in Engineering program commenced with major support from Ken Faulkes and Trevor Buchner.

1986 PhD programs introduced

IMPORTANT MILESTONES

1992 Reduced Federal funding - course changed to an eight semester program with 1.5 years experience.

1994 Civil and Environmental Engineering degree was introduced.

1998 All Schools abolished and a Faculty wide “matrix structure” adopted.

Old courses were replaced by one BE degree with specialisations (e.g. Civil, Mechanical) being

recorded as majors.

Core subjects now taken by all Engineering students (lectures given to several hundred students with

multiple tutorials)

Professional Experience now two six month periods with academic subjects before and after each

period leading to a Diploma qualification. Graduates were now awarded a BE (XXX) DipEngPrac.

About 2002 BE degree, with no Professional Experience introduced to attract overseas students.

2008 Engineering and IT Faculties amalgamated and Schools reintroduced – School of Civil and

Environmental Engineering created.

2014 Engineering Faculty moved to Building 11

JEREMIAH “JERRY” JACKSON (NSWIT 1979 - 1982)

Working with nuclear waste disposal.

Taught as a Professor of Business at Saint Paul the Great

Catholic University, California.

A keen pilot and has made over 1,800 parachute jumps.

8 successful world-record sky dives and holds the NAA

round-trip trans continental speed record in his modified

plane.

Wrote 2 books about his flying exploits: “Four Minutes” and

“The Flight of the Feral Chihuahua”

Currently building his own four-passenger RV-10 plane.

SIA PARSANEJAD (1987 - 2001)

Retired 2001

Managing Director Ulti-Technique (Australia) Pty Limited, now

trading as utech engineers, which is a boutique Structural

and Civil Engineering consultancy.

In 2009, he retired and passed the firm on to his son and

took an advisory role for him since then. He keeps busy

playing a lot of bridge, some golf, some skiing and traveling

extensively.

Sia now spends about six months of the year in the USA

GRAHAM S TOFT (1969 - 1978)

On leaving NSWIT, gained a Ph.D at Purdue University in Indiana in public policy and

urban engineering. He joined the staff at Purdue.

1989 - awarded the Distinguished Professional Planner Award by the Indiana Planning

Association.

1988 - 2001 President of the Indiana Economic Development Council, Inc., the state’s

think tank on economic development.

Led the preparation of strategic economic development plans for Indiana in 1988, 1994,

and 1999.

Worked at the Hudson Institute where he supports the work of Workforce 2020,

Manufacturing 2020 and undertakes applied research at the state, regional and local

levels.

He has retired recently and moved to Florida.

ALLAN PATTISON AM (1972 – 1975)

Served as Dean of the Engineering Faculty, Vice-President of NSWIT and Director-

General of TAFE NSW.

He has been a Council member of NSWIT and UTS and the University of Western

Sydney and a Professor of Engineering at UTS.

On retiring went into voluntary work for regional groups including the Hunter Valley

Research Foundation and the Hunter Catchment Management Trust.

Awarded a Doctorate of the University by UTS and made a Member of the Order of

Australia.

Inducted by Engineers Australia to the Water Engineering Hall of Fame.

2015 - Commenced his current role as Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Division of Information Technology, Engineering and the Environment (ITEE), University of South Australia.

LES CRIDLAND (1969 – 1989)

After retiring, he continued part-time lecturing at UTS and some consulting work.

Pastime hobbies include golf, gardening, grand children photography (history of photography), researching family ancestors and gourmet lunches with some fellow retirees.

He participated in the activities of the University of the Third Age (U3A) He reminisces about the enjoyable working relationships, he had with many of the former staff of the School of Civil Engineering, UTS.

DAVE TAPNER (1971 - 1995)

Dave retired from UTS partly due to heart problems.

Still undertook a lot of engineering design consulting work.

He spent 7 months updating the positions of channel markers on the Brisbane Waters Hydrographic Chart that he had prepared initially with Alan Brady, Jeff Holmes and Joe McMahon in the late 1970s. The newly published official Naval chart shows his name on it and is largely his work.

In 2016 he needed to have a heart valve replaced and suffered a stroke at that time.

He is making a good recovery but is now in ‘Wahroonga House’ Nursing Home. He can walk 30m on his own and there is hope he may be able to return to his Koolewong home around the middle of this year.

KEITH CREWS (1993 – PRESENT)

Keith currently the Project Leader for the new FEIT Laboratories.

2006 - became a professor of Structural Engineering

2011 to 2015 - Faculty’s Associate Dean – External Engagement

He has won numerous national and international awards for his Timber

research and has been and still is a referee or editor for over 20

Conferences, technical publications and journals.

RON TINYOU (1973 – 1987)

Ron is a co-author of a classic Steel Designers Handbook.

After retiring from UTS, Ron continued his teaching career Part-Time at TAFE and with Professional bodies till very recently.

He has continued his Chinese language studies as well asresearching his family history.

He is now 94 and still living at his home in Lindfield.

JEPPE NIELSEN (1984 - 1989)

Jeppe left UTS and became an Associate Director at Patterson

Britton & Partners, Sydney, for six years.

1995 - set up Nielsen Environmental Pty Ltd and was

Director until 2001.

2001- became the Manager, Water and Wastewater, Snowy

Mountains Engineering Corporation, for three years.

He then spent one year as Principal - Integrated Catchment

Management, URS Australia.

2005 - 2008 he returned to his consulting company.

2009 - 2016 an International Consultant for East Meets West, a World Bank funded

program to design, construct and build 82 new clean water systems in rural areas of

Central Vietnam and the Mekong Delta.

GEOFFREY O’LOUGHLIN (1975 – 1998)

On leaving UTS, Geoff joined David Robinson and Laurie Rose in

consultancy practice at Parramatta. He spent ten years there.

At the same time he was further developing and enhancing the

Hydraulics and Urban Drainage design program DRAINS, that he

had created. He also embarked on a sales program and ran

training courses related to DRAINS.

He also partnered research programs in the Hydraulics Lab at

UTS with Jaya Kandasamy and is now starting to do “retired

person” things like going on cruises and charity work.

IAN JOLLIFFE (1984 – 1987)

1987 to 1988 - Senior Engineer with Cameron McNamarra Pty Ltd from

Pty Ltd - focussed on water resources related projects, environmental

assessments and a small amount of traffic engineering.

Cameron McNamarra was acquired by Kinhill Engineers primarily working

on water resources projects with Kinhill.

1992 - Held a variety of technical and management roles GHD Pty Ltd in

the Sydney and then Newcastle offices. Working on projects in Asia,

Middle East, New Zealand and throughout Australia.

In recent years he has been primarily involved in the planning and design

of major road and rail infrastructure projects, urban development planning,

mining and the provision of specialist advice in relation to legal matters.

MARK CARLETON (1986 - 1990)

Has spent 15 years as the NSW Commissioner of Inquiry for Planning and Environment reviewing major projects such as mines, ports and freeways etc.

He has served as an Acting Commissioner of the Land and Environment Court and

undertook consulting work related to major highway upgrades and Transgrid

corridors.

Finishing his active engineering work as the Sydney Water Alliance Manager on a

design, build, construct and operate project of three hydroelectric stations and 12 cogeneration power stations supplying 20% of Sydney Water's annual power.

Infamous for having run the Tower Building out of water for 24 hours when he emptied and refilled the hydraulic lab flume not realizing it is larger than the tower

building's roof top tank (only refilled at night off peak).

MANA PATARAPANICH (1988 - 1995)

Joined one of the largest consulting firms in Bangkok, Southeast Asia Technology Group, in charge of a subsidiary firm, Aspac Consultants Co., Ltd.

2004 - set up a small consulting firm, Sea Spectrum Co., Ltd., specializing in Port and Coastal Engineering. Working on interesting projects for several government departments and private companies, such as; Marine Department, Department of Marine and Coastal Resources, Department of Mineral Resources, Department of Irrigation, Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policies and Planning, Electricity Generation Authority of Thailand, PTT Exploration and Production Co., Ltd., Sahaviriya Steel Industries Group, and Chevron Thailand. Current projects include designing two tourist boat piers in the Andaman Sea, a dry bulk terminal for sugar export, river entrance training jetties, and coastal erosion protection works in the Gulf of Thailand.

Foundation member of the School’s Yum Cha Club.

FERGUS BELL (1975 - 1981)

Joined Scruttons dealing mainly with Shimadzu testing machines.

1990 – Went to Inspek, which was bought out by AMEC.

1992 - returned to Scruttons for 2 years.

1995 - 2007 set up his own business Amitest, dealing with all types of industrial testing products.

2007 – 2015 worked for Shimadzu.

MICHAEL BATES (1977 - 1987)

On leaving UTS, Michael set up a manufacturing businesswhich grew to 28 employees, making Medical and Veterinary Equipment.

In 2001, after struggling for two years with low sales resulting from various business decisions and market conditions we wentinto voluntary administration, and the business was sold. Mick continued to work in the business until 2006 in a management role.

In 2006 he left to start my own small business, Bloodline Equipment, which sells and services Veterinary Equipment, which I continue in today.

He is happily married with three children and six grandchildren.

On 15 February 1967, the first intake of 120 students to the Civil and Structural Engineering Diplomas (later upgraded to Degrees) attended an Orientation

function in Turner Hall, Harris Street, Ultimo. The teaching of Civil Engineering at NSWIT was about to begin.

In 1972 the following people comprised the first graduating cohort.

KEN HALSTEAD

Worked in local government for 29 years, 20 years of which were at the Senior Staff (Management) level at three councils.

1978 - part time lecturing at NSWIT on Local Government Law and Engineering and Town Planning.

1994 - Joined UTS on a full time basis. He has served as Director of various Local Government related coursework programs.

2016 - retired

1995 - 1999 - Councillor on Wingecarribee Shire Council.

2008 - 2012 - Mayor

2016 - 2018 - Mayor elected for another term

1972 – 1973 Dept. Civil Aviation – working on maintenance and construction of runways and taxiways.

1974 – 1997 Eurobodalla Shire Council – ‘few years’ stay turned into a lifetime. The fast growing council provided a wide range of civil engineering experiences.

1998 -1999 Canberra University, Facilities Management – intense activity in a compact area.

2000 – 2010 Self Employed – an enjoyable period mainly involved with IPWEA arranging and presenting topics to engineering staff in southern NSW.

LAURIE ROSE AM

1974 – 2003 - Principal of Rose Consulting Group.

2003 – 2012 Executive Chairman, Brown Consulting. From then he became the

Manager Urban Strategy (Calibre Consulting), a position he still occupies.

Member of the Order of Australia (General Division) AM for service to Town Planning

particularly Urban Design and service to Water Quality particularly erosion control.

Honorary Life Member of both the Urban Development Institute of Australia, where he

was a NSW Councillor for 33 years, and Stormwater Industry Association.

He, along with Geoff O’Loughlin and David Robinson were co-founders of the SIA.

Councillor with International Erosion Control Association (Australasia) and the Housing

Industry Association.

Member of the Urban Land Institute (USA).

RON SELDON

Apprentice in fitting and turning then became a draftsman.

1968 – 1996 Simon Carves (Australia) as a design draftsman, culminating as Operations

Manager. This involved working on the design and construction of major chemical power

plants.

Completed a Master of Business Administration at Macquarie University at the age of 50.

Joined Fluor and was originally responsible for the commercial aspects of a major feasibility

study for Australian Magnesium Corporation.

Appointed Australian Business Development Manager for the Mining & Metals Business

Group, then Senior Director of Sales for the Fluor Energy & Chemicals Business Group.

Appointed Executive Director of the Fluor Australia Pty Ltd Board in 2009. Ron retired from

Fluor after 15 years at the age of 72.

Since retiring, Ron completed the AICD Company Directors Course and is now a Non-

Executive Director of the oil & gas organisation ‘Wellsite Permit To Work Association’.

IAN HAYES

Ian worked with Hornsby Shire Council for two years then became Shire Engineer at

Warren where he worked till 1980.

He worked with Laurie Rose for two years then set up his own Consulting Civil and

Structural Engineering practice. He became Licenced Builder and the practice

prospered.

In 2007, Ian tried to retire, … and went to Uzbekistan as a Surveyor on an

archaeological dig with Sydney University.

In 2008, Durham University signed him up for the same job in Jordan with their dig.
