Literary Elements {Character, Setting, Plot}
Characters: people in the
story
Setting: where & when the story
takes place
Plot: the sequence of events
Background Knowledge:
what a reader already knows about a given
topic, gathered from personal
experience.
Historical Fiction:
is realistic fiction that takes place
in the past.
Fictional characters are
placed in a historically
factual setting.
Word Analysis: {Word Ending -ing}
The affix –ing can be added to verbs to form
nouns or ad jectives.
ex) bark+ -ing = barking
Vocabulary Skill: {Multiple-Meaning Words}
Some words have more than one meaning. If the
meaning you know does not make
sense, look up the word in the
dictionary & try each meaning in the
sentence.
Literary Term: {Foreshadowing}
Hints & clues about what will happen later in the
story are called
foreshadowing.
Convention: {Subjects & Predicates}
The sub ject tells whom or what the sentence is
about. The pred icate tells what the subject does.
complete subject = all the words in the subject
complete predicate = all the words in the
predicate
The girls went to the creek.
Writing: {Parody}
a written work that imitates the style of
another author or written work, using humor or
exaggeration.
