Reading Read “The Pirate Substitute” in Ms. Proctor’s Google Classroom under the “Classwork” tab. Then, complete the assignment in the same location in Google Classroom, explaining what makes each summary choice good or bad, and tell me which is the best summary choice. Make sure to ‘turn in’ the assignment when done.

For a lower tech option, email Ms. Proctor, who will share the story with you via email, then complete the assignment on pg 3 and send to Ms. Proctor.

Practice your skills inferring word meaning by playing this Kahoot Game on any device (you should not need to download the app). Make sure to use your real name as your nickname. If you used an unrecognizable nickname last week, let Ms. Proctor know so you can get credit. The Challenge PIN, if needed, is posted in my Google Classroom under the ‘Classwork’ tab.

For a lower tech option, answer the questions attached on pg 4 and return to Ms. Proctor.

*Highly Suggested* Watch this lesson by clicking the link or viewing it in Google Classroom under the ‘Classwork’ tab. This lesson focuses on analyzing the author’s word choice, how it makes us think and feel, and what they really mean.

After the lesson, complete the Poetry Assignment (Autumn Leaves) Google Slides located in Ms. Proctor’s Google Classroom under the ‘Claswork’ tab. Don’t forget to ‘turn in” when done.

Directions: First, read the story “The Pirate Substitute” in Ms. Proctor’s Google Classroom.

Answer all three questions below, and finally, circle the best summary of the selection. Think about what a good fiction summary needs as you explain your answers. What does each summary choice have, or not have?

● Mrs. Martinez had a substitute that came dressed as a pirate! The pirate taught the class how to talk like a pirate, how to use a compass to steer a ship, and about oceans on the map! Jack drew a picture of a pirate fighting skeletons that the substitute liked, and he even got to tell the substitute a pirate joke.

1. Why is this the correct or incorrect summary?

● All the kids in class participated in their substitute teacher’s pirate lessons, however, Jack was shy and just wanted to draw. But, Jack was able to find the buried costumes outside and when there were no more left to take, the pirate let Jack borrow his hat. The pirate taught Jack that it’s OK to be shy as long as your heart is in the right place.

2. Why is this the correct or incorrect summary?

● Jack was a very shy student who liked to spend time alone. Even the other students know that he didn’t talk much. When anyone tried to get Jack to talk, he just mumbled and kept his head down, preferring to draw in his notebook. But, Jack was able to save the day when he found the buried treasure outside by the swings.

3. Why is this the correct or incorrect summary?

Hints! Are you stuck or want to check your work? Read below AFTER you tried your best to answer questions 1-3 first.

1. Think about what season we are talking about in this poem. How can that season be between ‘sizzle and snow’? What seasons could those be?

2. What can leaves do that have to do with color during Autumn? How could it look like color is being splashed everywhere?

3. Did you look up with “commotion” means? Try that! How can leaves make a commotion that helps us remember them. Why would they “go”? What’s about to happen to them after Autumn is over?
