Compare  the  call  number you’re  looking  for  against  the end  labels  on  the  shelves.  Find  where  the  range  is  that contains  your  book.    Proceed down  the  range  to  locate  the book.  In the LC SYSTEM the rst  line represents  subject  area  and single  le�ers  come  before double le�ers.  For example, B comes  before  BF.    Next  com‐pare  the numbers, 199 comes before 200.  Then compare the alpha‐numeric  combina�on, example:  BF199.44 .E85 comes before BF199.44 F85.

They are classified using the Superintendent of Documents call number system (SuDoc for short), an alphanumeric system where all numbers are whole numbers (not decimals!) separated by punctuation, including periods, slashes, dashes, and always a colon.
