A novel water-soluble peptide designated herein as Bu-2517 is produced by fermentation of Em- pedoba~er sp. strain G393-B445 (ATCC 31962). The antibiotic exists in a cyclic depsipep- tide structure and contains the amino acids D- serine, D-proline, L-proline, D-threo- beta- hydroxyaspar tic acid, L-threo- beta- hydroxyaspa'rtic acid, L-arginine and trans-L-3- hydroxyproline and the residue of the C14 fatty acid, 3-hydroxytetradecanoic acid. The Bu-2517 antibiotic inhibits the growth of a variety of aerobic and anaerobic gram-positive bacteria.

A process for preparing a gut glucagon antigen composed of a peptide-carrier complex is dis- closed, which comprises using as hapten a pep- tide represented by the following general formula; See Patent for Tabular Presentation PS wherein R represents a hydrogen atom, an amino acid group or a peptide group containing 2 to 20 amino acid groups, and reacting it with a carrier in the presence of a binding agent for bi- nding the hapten and the carrier to each other. Also, a process for preparing a gut glucagon antibody, which comprises administering the antigen described to mammals, and collecting the thus-produced antibody, is disclosed.
