Bob previously workedfor Connor's Pharmacy, and St.James Mercy Hospital early in hiscareer. In 1978 he was appointedto the Hornell Fire Department,

serving the community he loved,retiring in December 2003, andrecently was an employee ofSteuben County Sheriff's Depart-ment from 2004-2010. He was amember of Our Lady of ValleyParish and a communicant of St.Ann's Church, and was a mem-ber of the AOH of Hornell. Bobpreviously had been code en-forcement officer of Hornellsville,Canisteo, and Hartsville, votingmachine custodian, and was amember of the Hornell Assoc.,

Hornell American Legion, and theKnights of Columbus, and wasserving on the Cemetery boardfor Our Lady of the Parish. He also

Glenn Gebhards class at Hornell Intermediate School recently studied how lensesbend light, culminating in a project that used a Fresnel lens to melt pennies.

A Fresnel lens pronounced (fray-NELL) is a thin plastic lens with concentric circlesof ridges cut at precise angles. Glass Fresnel lenses are used in lighthouses to focusbeams of light far out to sea.

Students learned that pennies minted from 1963-1982 are made of 95 percent copperand 5 percent zinc, while those minted after 1983 are 97.5 percent zinc and 2.5percent copper. Since zinc melts at 420 degrees C (787 degrees F) and Copper meltsat 1,085 degrees C (1,984 degrees F), students could use the lens to melt the zinc coreof the penny and squeeze it out, similar to squeezing the jelly out of a donut, Gebhardsaid. Further heating melts the copper, too, into a blob, he added. Students then werechallenged to apply what they learned in a new way by suggesting other uses for thisform of alternative energy.

Mrs. Kuhns class held their annual poetryreading in February. All fourth-graders areinvited to event, which is held in theIntermediate School library. The library isset up in a coffee house atmosphere, withrefreshments provided. Pictured is CollinRose reading his poem about a funny rabbit.

Every year in the early spring, the Hornell Intermediate School sponsors a 6thgrade intramural swim team. The intramural opportunity allows coaches tointroduce the students to swimming competition prior to high school. Theycompete with area schools and learn about the rules and regulations involved incompetitive swim. The team is coached by Mr. Andy Rocky Smilinich and Mr.Don Spittler. Pictured are the members of the 2010 spring intramural team.
