Being raised in this area on a grain and livestock operation, Michael became aware at an early age of the old Indian campsites, buffalo kills and vision quest sites, etc. It was this experience, combined with his intense interest in early history of the West that helped form what was to become the nucleus of his work. Michael is best known for his work with historical and wildlife themes with special attention given to authenticity and detail, while striving to impart a lifelike feel to his art. His works are collected by museums and in private collections worldwide.

Earnest (Ernie) Wayne LaPointe Ernie was born in 1948 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. He is a Sun Dancer and lives the traditional way of the Lakota and follows the rules of the sacred pipe. On his Mother’s side he is the great grandson of Sitting Bull and Seen By Her Nation Woman, the grandson of Standing Holy (Sitting Bull’s youngest daughter) her Christian name was Mary Sitting Bull, and Urban Spotted Horse. In 1992, Ernie was given the opportunity to set the record straight on the Sitting Bull direct blood descendants by speaking at the induction of Sitting Bull into the Hall of Fame of American Indian Chiefs at Anadarko, Oklahoma. Ernie will perform the blessing of his great-grandfather Sitting Bull’s Statue during the Unveiling event.

Receiving the education that will prepare students for a great career is even more attainable with Williston State College’s new Western Star Career and Technology Education Center. “The center was set up in a cooperative agreement with 14 schools in the Greater Northwest area and Williston State College for students in area high schools to work on a career and educational pathway in job-ready type programs,” says Wanda Meyer, Vice President for Instruction. “Students will be able to take courses

that count toward a high school diploma, a degree at Williston State College, or both at the same time. It provides students with the opportunity to take curriculum and learn skills that will prepare them for the job market within one to two years of course and lab work.”

When the center opens in the fall of 2011, it will be home to educational programs such as Welding Technology, Residential Carpentry Technology, Automotive Technology, and Health Careers. “There will also be training and credit opportunities available in emerging technology areas,” says Meyer, “and the goal is to have a Diesel Technology curriculum available in about a year.”

“We’re very excited about the new Career and Technology Center,” says Robb Floco, the Interim CTE Director. “It’s a great addition to Williston State College and a benefit to area high schools, and post-secondary students that want to work toward their career goals.”

The 60,000 square foot Western Star Career and Technology Education Center will celebrate its grand opening at 11a.m. on August 18, 2011.

“This is our second time through this process and we’re really excited to finally get this going,” says Williston State College Science and Mathematics Instructor, Lance Olson.

What Lance Olson is talking about is the Science Lab addition to the north end of Stevens Hall. Last summer, bids came in for the addition, however they were too high for the money that was allotted for the project. “We had to go back through the legislature and ask for more money,” says Olson. “We received an additional $1.3 million to help us complete this project.”

In total, the State granted Williston State College permission to spend $3.52 million for the addition. $2.93 million will come from the State general fund and anything above that will come from other funds, such as the Williston State College Foundation.

A main building on campus and four new laboratories/classrooms will be added to the north end. “We’ll be adding an Anatomy and Physiology Lecture/Lab, a Biology Lab, a Chemistry Lab, and an Engineering and Physics Classroom/Lab,” states Olson. “We’ll also be adding a new second floor student lounge area.”

“The plan is for the building process to begin in June and be completed and ready for use by the fall of 2012.” Olson goes on to say, “in addition to the new classrooms, three of the four labs will have capabilities to stream classes and to send and receive Interactive Video Network Classes. We’re currently collaborating with the University of North Dakota on programs for Petroleum and Geological Engineering, so our new addition and streaming capabilities will work very well for that. In fact, UND will be sending us four Engineering classes next year which we’ll offer in these new additions.”

All in all, the Science Lab addition to Stevens Hall will be another one of the added benefits that Williston State College is able to offer current and prospective students. “The new Frontier Hall that’s opening this coming fall, our new CTE building, and the Science Lab addition, are all a real boom for our college,” says Olson. “It’s really nice that we’re able to offer more and more opportunities at our school.”

Virtual T

rucking

Eyes glued to the highway, glancing quickly to the left and right to check my mirrors for traffic. Concentrating on a smooth transition from on-ramp to highway speed. Shifting smoothly and double clutching…under control and SMACK! The roar of the engine dies and twisted metal engulfs the truck. My test drive, albeit in a virtual truck simulator, has been terminated because my truck wiped out a highway sign. A while back, I missed a warning sign that informed me of the clearance limitations for this highway. The bad news? This type of accident happens every day. The good news? It happened to me in a truck driving simulator purchased by Williston State College.

The simulator gives prospective drivers a chance to get the feel of a real truck long before they jump behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler and head for the highway. As a CDL licensed driver, I can verify that the simulator seems real, right down to the grinding of the gears when the driver fails to double clutch. TrainND CEO,

Deanette Piesik says that the simulator will also save thousands of dollars in repairs to clutches and transmissions as students struggle to learn how to shift and drive a truck. In addition to the student driving the simulator, there is a seating area that allows up to ten more students to watch the training procedure. Driving takes place under the watchful eye of an instructor, who sits directly behind the student driver and controls the simulated experience. “Each drive can be set up differently. A company can tell us about their equipment and we can match it on the simulator,” said Piesik. “We can then rent the simulator out to companies to train for variations such as snow or wet, muddy roads.”

For student training, over 200 training scenarios can be set up. Common scenarios include acceleration, steering, and freeway driving. The simulator can also be used to train drivers in skills like backing up, parallel parking, and defensive driving.

The $194,000 simulator was purchased with grant assistance from the North Dakota Oil and Gas Research Council and from local gas and oil companies who see a value in having the simulator available for training purposes. These companies are looking for potential employees all over the nation. The employees are not used to driving in North Dakota, but can quickly learn with time in the simulator.

“One of the most common job postings in our area is for truck drivers,” says Piesik. “There are over 700 jobs available right now, and the demand is growing every day.” But that doesn’t mean that every person will enjoy truck driving as a vocation. Piesik says that truck drivers must:

1. Like working shifts 2. Enjoy intense driving 3. Have patience to sit and wait in lines 4. Have patience for other vehicles on the road 5. Like being alone

Over the road truckers must also be tolerant of travel that takes them away from home overnight, on weekends, and even over holidays.

“It used to be strictly a male dominated field, but right now it’s wide open for female truck drivers who want to accept the challenge of driving truck,” said Piesik.

The simulator can also be taken out to job fairs and other areas to give potential students a chance to get the real feel of driving a truck. The experience will either be exciting and give them the urge to continue their education and get a Commercial Driver’s License, or it may send them in a different direction because truck driving is just not what they imagined it would be.

According to Williston State College Safety and Technology Center Director, Dennis Knudson, “The simulator will be put to good use for many years to come. As long as there’s a demand for CDL drivers in the area, there will be a demand for a high-tech simulator like this.”

You may have heard the familiar saying that “you don’t have a second chance to make a good first impression.” Leah Hess, Enrollment Coordinator at Williston State College, realizes that for many high school students she may be that first impression. She works hard to make sure that the impression they have is not only positive, but also an impression that gives them an incentive to research Williston State College, and ultimately tour the campus. “I really encourage them to experience the campus. It’s so important that they see what we have to offer at Williston State College.”

The important job of giving tours falls on Leah and the student ambassadors. The ambassadors are handpicked and receive scholarships as payment for their efforts. But their commitment to being an ambassador can lead to very busy schedules. “We can give up to 15 tours a week during the spring,” said Leah, and the scope of the tour depends on the student.

Traditional students want to see the program that they are interested in. They want to see their program in action, and get a lot of information like, ‘what classes am I going to have to take?’ They also want to observe what college is like and ask questions like, ‘can we take laptops to classes’ or other questions that they are too embarrassed to ask in larger groups.

“Non-traditional or students returning to school want to meet with faculty; they are more directed and like to visit and get to know personalities. They don’t care if they fit in. They care that they are getting a good educational experience,” said Leah.

If the students show an interest, they get introduced to admissions, housing, financial aid, and other areas that are important, should they decide to enroll at Williston State College.

For Leah and the ambassadors, the tours are an opportunity for some relationship selling. “Even though we are selling the college experience, it’s also important to show students that there is an academic side. We are able to share with them that their education at Williston State College can take them somewhere. I not only sell them Williston State, but that they can continue on in the secondary education should that be their ambition.”

After the tour, the selling continues with ongoing contact. “Once they show an interest, they want a resource for their questions and expect their questions to be answered. We also share information like what classes they should take now to make them successful in their program of interest when attending Williston State College. We have to continue to communicate; we have to live up to our slogan line Where the People Make the Difference.”

Of course attending Williston State College also has to be fun. And this year Leah and the ambassadors are taking particular joy in showing potential students the new look of the college, including the new residence hall that will open in time for the fall semester. “The new residence hall is crucial to the student experience,” said Leah. “I would encourage all students to live on campus, even students from Williston and Watford City. They will get the total college experience by living on campus.”

On-campus tours are the culmination of a lot of hard work by Leah and her staff. In the fall she is on the road making contact with students in North Dakota and Montana, exposing them to Williston State College. These high school visits are very important. “Students get to skip class to come to these college fairs,” states Leah, “but once we get a chance to talk to them and tell them our story and about our programs we start to develop a relationship with them.” Leah encourages the students to look at what is best for them and chart a path to that goal. “Even though we are in competition for the same students, all of us that represent the different colleges have the same goal, to help the students get to where they want to go.” The enrollment job, like any job in sales, takes a lot of energy and the ability to build relationships.

Leah is from Billings, Montana and attended Eastern Oregon University in La Grande, Oregon. She

Selling The Experience

admits that the city of Williston is smaller than what she is used to, but that the Enrollment Coordinator position has been a positive experience for her. At Eastern Oregon she was a Residence Hall Director, a position that required a lot of contact with the students she managed.

And the future? Leah believes that Williston State College is turning a corner and becoming more of a student-based campus, while continuing to attract different students than bigger four-year schools.

For 23 year-old Leah Hess, the Enrollment Coordinator position is a challenge that she accepts, and with her great personality and warm, inviting smile, you know she is making a great first impression.

cial Don’t Just Clean Your House,

Clean Up Your Finances.Consumer Advocate Offers Top 10 Tips for Getting Your

Financial House in Order • By Douglas E. Taylor

Washington, D.C., March 15, 2011 – Tax season is in full bloom and Americans are up to their elbows in statements, receipts, and 1099’s. The IRS tells us it will only take an hour or so to fill out our 1040’s, but they clearly have not factored in the time it takes us to sort through, let alone find, our financial information. Thoughts of a giant post–April 15th bonfire may come to mind. But before you light the match, consider another, more sensible way to handle your finances.

Certified Financial Planner™ and Board of Standards Consumer Advocate, Eleanor Blayney, CFP® recommends that while you are cleaning up your house after a long winter, celebrate spring by cleaning up your finances as well.

Here are 10 ways to freshen up your finances:1. Store it. Set up a three–tier storage system. Get hanging files for information you will need within the next year, such as receipts or transaction confirmations. Then get storage bins for documents you need to save for more than one year, such as tax returns (three years after filing), or real estate records (for as long as you own the property, plus three years). Finally, get a fireproof, lockable box for difficult–to–replace items such as your Social Security card, wills, and other estate planning documents.

2. Review your beneficiaries. Make a clean sweep of your estate plan by checking that the correct beneficiaries are designated on your insurance policies and qualified retirement accounts. For example, minor children cannot inherit assets outright without a trust or custodian.

3. Double check your estate plan. While you have your hands on those estate planning documents, reread them to see if anything in your life has changed that would make revisions necessary.

4. Get your free credit report. It’s available annually at www.annualcreditreport.com. Get a copy and be sure to read it closely. That way, you can clean up any entries made by creditors that are incorrect.

5. Save automatically. Set up a regular transfer from your paycheck or checking account to a savings account and begin building an emergency reserve. Then forget about those savings. Just like that dust accumulating on the top of the fridge, it’s out of sight, out of mind. But most importantly, out of your easy reach.

6. Go digital. Don’t ever again trip over the clutter of your busy life and forget to pay a bill or a credit card account on time. Use your mobile phone or computer to send yourself reminders of payments due and thereby avoid those dirty, rotten late fees!

7. Protect what you own. While you are changing your clocks and checking your smoke detectors, check your home or renter’s insurance as well. Make sure you have the necessary amount of coverage to avoid any major out–of–pocket losses in the event of a fire, theft, or other disaster.

8. Consolidate. Make your next spring-cleaning a much easier job by consolidating your investment accounts with one provider. Often, custodians will provide a single statement on your accounts, even if the accounts must be separately titled. Having a single source for your investment information makes the job of monitoring and rebalancing your accounts more efficient. Be aware, however, that holding all your accounts with a single custodian can limit the amount of SIPC or FDIC coverage available to you.

9. Take a deep dive into your finances. When those spring-showers keep you cooped up for a long afternoon, review all of your checks, credit card statements, and debit transactions from the year before. If you have online banking, you can usually export a year’s worth of transactions into a spreadsheet, which you can then sort and classify. You’ll see where you are spending the most money and can therefore focus your budgeting and cost–saving efforts accordingly. This review should also provide the basis for a workable budget going forward, a must for anyone wanting to clean up his or her finances.

10. Get help from a CFP® professional. Once your financial information is in order, take it to a Certified Financial Planner™ professional who can then develop a comprehensive financial plan for getting you to your lifetime goals. To find a CFP® professional in your area, go to www.cfp.net.

“The best part of this spring–cleaning exercise is that no heavy lifting or elbow grease is required. All that is needed is time. And the more time you put in now, the less time it will take to manage your finances in the future,” said Blayney. “Imagine this: come next tax season, you might even be able to get your taxes done within the IRS time estimate.”

Michael Westergard, Professional Sculptor Michael is a self-taught sculptor. He makes his home in the extreme Northeast part of Montana where he and his wife Patricia operate the Westergard-Ragucci Bronze Studio. Located just north of the historic Forts Union and Buford on the Missouri River, the area is rich in history from the prehistoric man through the Indian War period and on to the early day outlaws. Being raised in this area on a grain and livestock operation, Michael became aware at an early age of the old Indian campsites, buffalo kills and vision quest sites, etc. It was this experience, combined with his intense interest in early history of the west, that helped form what was to become the nucleus of his work. Michael is best known for his work with historical and wildlife themes, with special attention given to authenticity and detail, while striving to impart a lifelike feel to his art. His works are collected by museums and in private collections worldwide.

Earnest (Ernie) Wayne LaPointe Ernie was born in 1948 on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation of South Dakota. He is a Sun Dancer living the traditional way of the Lakota and follows the rules of the sacred pipe. On his mother’s side he is the great grandson of Sitting Bull and Seen By Her Nation Woman, the grandson of Standing Holy (Sitting Bull’s youngest daughter), and Urban Spotted Horse.

“They contacted me with an idea of doing a sculpture of Sitting Bull,” Westergard remarks. “They wanted a sculpture to sit right outside of the entrance to Williston State College and they wanted to do something historical to the area.”

A self-taught sculptor, Westergard’s art portrays the history, wildlife, and people of the American West in not only an artistic manner, but also with accuracy, detail, and a huge respect for the subject matter.

“I wanted to do an interpretation of the moment that Sitting Bull surrendered to the commanding officer of Fort Buford,” Westergard says. “The moment when he hands over his model ‘66 Winchester rifle.”

To begin the art process, Westergard first presented the college with a Marquette, or a miniature version of the actual finished sculpture. “The Marquette allowed them to see what the piece would look like, on a smaller scale,” he said.

“The Marquette took three to four months to create,” says Westergard. “Once that was done and approved I started working on the full size sculpture, which took

about four to five months to complete. The final process, the bronzing, takes another two months.”

All in all, Westergard has spent most of the last year working on what will be a six-foot sculpture. “There is so much history in this region. What I strive for in my work is to really capture the accuracy of that rich history,” Westergard says.

You’ll be able to view that rich history when the Sitting Bull statue is dedicated July 16, 2011.

Michael Westergard

You want something impressive, something historical, something that will sit front and center for everyone to see. So what do you do? Well, if you’re Williston State College History Professor Richard Stenberg and Williston Attorney Greg Hennessy, you call up famed sculptor Michael Westergard.

In July of 1881 the Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux Chief Sitting Bull returned from exile in Canada, and surrendered himself and what was left of his followers at Fort Buford. During a ceremony in the commanding officer’s quarters at Fort Buford on July 19, 1881, Sitting Bull turned over his rifle to his young son, Crow Foot, who in turn gave it to Major Brotherton, Fort Buford’s Commanding Officer. Sitting Bull then gave a stirring oration about his return and what the future now held for him and his people. A few days later, all of the Lakota Sioux were placed on board a steamer and sent downriver, eventually arriving at Fort Randall, South Dakota.

In 1995 Paul Hedren, then Superintendent of Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site, researched and determined that the surviving Officer’s Quarters at Fort Buford State Historic Site was where the above ceremony took place. This is perhaps the most significant event in Fort Buford’s history. In addition to uncovering that the surviving building was still in existence, other information was discovered and Hedren’s findings were published as “Sitting Bull’s Surrender at Fort Buford: An Episode in American History” in North Dakota History. To further commemorate this event, a number of ideas were bantered about and enough support was gained through the Friends of Fort Union/Fort Buford for a fund-raising project to erect a “heroic” sized statue at Fort Buford of Sitting Bull. A special bronze plaque was struck with an inscription of the event and Sitting Bull’s oration. Due to a number of factors, most notably Paul Hedren’s departure from the Superintendency of Fort Union Trading Post, the statue project languished and eventually came to a complete stop. The plaque was placed in storage in the State Historical Society of North Dakota’s archives.

When Dr. Raymond Nadolny accepted the Presidency of Williston State College in the spring of 2009, he was struck about the incompleteness of the college, most notably that Williston State College did not “look” like a college campus. He feels strongly that one of the roles of a community college is to serve as a stage to showcase the region’s cultural and historical stories. Dr. Nadolny tasked Richard Stenberg, Assistant Professor of History at Williston State College and also a long-term seasonal ranger at Fort Union Trading Post, with helping address this deficiency. While the original emphasis of placing historic artwork and displays in the hallways of Stevens

Hall and external statutory is still a goal, in the fall of 2009 Stenberg brought the Friends of Fort Union together with Williston State College to revisit the Sitting Bull statue project launched more than a decade ago. Dr. Nadolny was very taken with the earlier project and especially the oration that Sitting Bull gave that was, in part, an educational mission statement.

In the resulting discussions the Friends of Fort Union/Fort Buford, who had ownership on the project, entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Williston State College to allow the resurrection of the statue project. However, instead of placing a statue at the Fort Buford State Historic Site, it would be on the campus of Williston State College. Also, instead of undertaking a fund-raising campaign, the Williston State College Foundation agreed to fund the project fully upfront. Though an earlier working model was struck in a limited edition for fund-raising purposes and a life-sized cast made for the earlier project, it was decided to rethink the image. It was strongly suggested by a number of individuals that, if available, renowned artist Michael Westergard of Plentywood, Montana be approached. Westergard has done a number of bronzes for the Lewis & Clark Foundation of native peoples and is highly regarded for his accuracy of detail.

Westergard was interested in the project and a contract was entered into between him and the Williston State College Foundation. Last year a timeline was agreed to with the goal being a reveal and dedication of the statute to occur in the summer of 2011. The front of Stevens Hall has witnessed much construction this winter and spring due to the preparations of the base for the statute and the plaque that has been retrieved from storage. Now we are ready.

This July is the beginning celebration of Williston State College’s 50th anniversary and also the 130th anniversary of the return of Sitting Bull to Fort Buford. As alumni of UND-W/Williston State College are encouraged to come home and enjoy the 50th anniversary events, we will commemorate “this episode of American History” - the return of Sitting Bull to the area. The public unveiling of the statute is scheduled for Saturday, July 16, at Williston State College and events at Fort Buford State Historic Site are occurring on Sunday, July 17.

01 In an effort to promote professional development, advance nursing practice, and grow a highly qualified nursing workforce, Trinity Health entered into a partnership with Williston State College in 2002. This partnership aims to increase the number of nursing students entering the profession.

Williston State College has since maintained an outreach site located on the fourth floor of Trinity Hospital – St. Joseph’s in Minot. Rhoda Owens, MSN, RN, is the Williston State College site manager.

According to Owens, the partnership came about when former leadership at Trinity was exploring ways to fill nursing positions. Creating a convenient alternative for students interested in pursuing their nursing degree in the Minot area was one of the more promising strategies.

“Trinity Health has always been supportive in our efforts to expand Williston State College’s nursing program and we’re grateful for the collaboration we have with them,” Owens said.

Owens said that having the outreach program at Trinity allows the students to enhance their academic experience through interactions with nursing staff in the workplace, participation in health promotions and education fairs in Trinity Hospital, and much more.

“While the current need for nurses is acute nationwide, it is expected to increase through 2020. Having the nursing program on-site at Trinity will allow these students to potentially transition into employment here; they get to know staff and procedures as they take part in their clinicals and other project involvement,” Owens said. “Across North Dakota, 40 percent of LPNs and 50 percent of RNs are projected to retire by 2020, and they will need to be replaced by competent candidates.” Barbra Brown, Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer for Trinity Health said, “that having a partnership with Williston State College fosters a dynamic learning environment and affords the nurses skills they need to transition to an actual care setting.”

“We are exposing these students to nursing professionals practicing at a standard of excellence through this partnership,” Brown added. “We believe this experience will benefit them throughout their careers in nursing, whether it be at Trinity Health or elsewhere.”

Owens said that nursing offers a challenging and rewarding career field with many different career opportunities within a variety of settings.

“If you would like to make an impact on people’s lives, enjoy interacting with people, and are responsible and can handle stressful situations, a nursing career may be well-suited for you,” she added.

Owens said that Williston State College offers nursing programs with two options: a Certificate in Practical Nursing, and an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing. Graduates are prepared to take their National Council Licensure Examinations for LPN or RN.

The following is a synopsis of these education options offered at Williston State College.

Nursing/Practical Nursing (LPN)

LPNs work under the supervision of a registered nurse, physician, or dentist. LPNs perform tasks utilizing specialized knowledge, skills, and abilities caring for people in a variety of settings.

“The Dakota Practical Nursing program is an eleven-month educational program that results in a Certificate in Practical Nursing,” Owens explained. “Students graduating from the Dakota Practical Nursing Program receive a certificate in Practical Nursing and are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX) for LPNs.”

Nursing/Associate Degree (RN)

RNs work interdependently and independently providing healthcare services, preventing disease, and helping patients to achieve better health. When providing care, the RN assesses and monitors patient conditions, administers medications, provides specialized treatments, and works with physicians and other members of the healthcare team.“The Dakota Associate Degree Nursing Program is a two-semester (RN) program for individuals who either are LPNs or have just completed the Dakota

Practical Nursing Program,” Owens explained. “Graduates will receive an Associate in Applied Science Degree in Nursing and may apply to write the NCLEX-RN for licensure as a Registered Nurse.”

“Healthcare is a dynamic industry and offers challenging and satisfying employment opportunities to nurses on an expanding basis,” Owens concluded.

from the

Greetings from the Williston State College Foundation. It has been a long, long winter and I am looking forward to some sunshine and warm weather. I am also excited about the continuing transformation of Williston State College into a more collegiate-looking campus. Having been at Williston State College for almost 30 years, I am indeed privileged to see the changes. As I reflect on my early years at UND-W, I am both proud and impressed by the dedication and intestinal fortitude of the administrators in the early years. UND-W was not part of the state system and funds were, at times, very tight. Garvin Stevens (past President), Gary Rooks (past Director of Instruction), and Lester Olson (past Business Officer) should be commended for using a team approach that kept UND-W open and successful. The faculty and staff were also dedicated, with many taking on additional classes, assignments, and job duties. Their efforts were an inspiration for the motto Where the People Make the Difference.

As President Nadolny leads us into another era, we are all very conscious that this college was built with strong “bones”. And now, as in the past, we recognize and applaud the support provided by the people of this region. Let’s not forget our roots as we look forward to a new and improved Williston State College. What a campus we will see by the fall of 2011! A campus honoring its past as it is dramaticallytransformed to serve the students of the 21st century.

Till next time, Go Tetons!Terry OlsonExecutive Director
