Welcome to the 2015 Evening of Innovation Traditionally as we wrap up the academic year we open the Annenberg Innovation Labrsquos doors to the public and invite all to participate in a celebration of what faculty researchers and students have been collaborating on with our sponsors throughout the year Tonight wersquore eager to have you engage us in discussion and tinker with a few of our latest prototypes

One of our capstone programs is the CRUNCH Student Design Challenge + Incubator which was made possible this year with the generous support of Maury Domengeaux and the Blackstone Charitable Foundation Part of this eveningrsquos agenda will include presentations from the six teams chosen for the incubator and mentoredbyarangeof expertsndashFrancescaMarieSmithTrevorSatterfieldIanDonahueGeoffreyLongandmyselfHavingmultiplementorseveryweekforthestudentsofferedadiversesetof expertisewhichwasvaluedbythestudentsaswesawintheirblogpostsreflectingontheexperienceIrsquomgratefultoeachoneof myfellowmentorsforvolunteeringtheirtimetomakeadifferenceinthesestudentsrsquolivesandhelpthesestartupsreachtheir full potential

OurfirstprojectisBridge to Solas a mobile roleplaying game that rewards playersforbuildinghealthyhabitsbyofferingin-gamerewardslikepointsplot progression and special items Bridge to Solas employs an innovative mechanic where players can customize the gaming experience to their tastes from the characterrsquos gender and appearance to the genre and style of the game itself with the basic narrative and underlying mechanic remaining constant While the game is designed to aid victims of sexual violence in their recovery we hope to expand this demographic with future installations

The AIL partnered with the creator of the Winklebeans a line of handcrafted wooden toy monsters with interchangeable magnetic pieces to explore how we might ldquotell tangible storiesrdquo with smart objects and the Internet of Things Children can assemble disassemble and reassemble the Winklebean characters to make thousandsof uniqueconfigurationswhichmakestheWinklebeansperfect for our exploration into tangible storytelling

By splicing sensors into the Winklebeansrsquo magnetic pieces and embedding a tiny PC into their chassis we transformed the wooden toys into smart objects that sync up wirelessly with a dynamic book apponaconnectedmobiledeviceWhenachildreconfiguresthetoy(forexamplewhenthechildtakesthelsquotailrsquopieceofftherearof the toy and attaches it instead to the top of the Winklebeanrsquos head) the storyline in the connected dynamic book app changes We also embedded a speaker into each toy which not only allows the Winklebean to participate in the ldquoperformancerdquo of the storytelling by adding its own commentary but also allows multiple Winklebeans to vocally react to one another when they are both synced to the same dynamic book app

Tangible Storytelling Winklebeans

About the WinklebeansWinklebeans are a small tribe of adventurous wooden monsters living in a massive old tree stump on top of Winklehill Legend has it that there used to be thousands of Winklebeans living on in a place called Winkle-isle before an event called ldquoThe Swallowingrdquo took Winkle-isle in the early part of the 19th century Now there are only six Winklebeans left five of which have never known life outside of Winklehill

Winklebeans are known amongst their animal friends for their special powers and unique ability to move exchange and create new ldquoelementsrdquo (body parts) They love exploring their forests and rivers but also wander into what appear to be abandoned human towns and cities on occasion But they always make it home to Winklehill and no one is ever left behind ldquoWinklebeans work togetherrdquo is their motto

Ourfirst-everLeveragingEngagementstudywasananalysisof thebiggestfandominsports soccer In partnership with Havas Sports amp Entertainment we surveyed fans in sixteen countries We observed fans watching Champions League and World Cup matchesindozensof differentcontextsinbothRiodeJaneiroandLosAngelesAndwe collected and analyzed millions of fan team player media and sponsor brand tweets

The data taught us that there are six basic soccer fan mindsets Some fans are louder than others Some are more social Some are more analytical Individual fansflowbetweenmindsetsbothgraduallyastheirlifecircumstancesevolveandinstantaneously when they bump into the right friend at the right time and we believe thatwersquovebeguntouncoverthespecificsituationaltriggers(whichfriendatwhichtime for example) that can inspire fans from each mindset group to become their most deeply engaged fan-selves

Following the success of our soccer study we have partnered again with Havas Sports amp Entertainment to take on an even bigger fandom analysis challenge in 2015 all music fans everywhere in the world As we did for soccer wersquore gathering a combination of survey data social media data and in-depth conversations with individual fans Havas has recruited Universal Music Group onto the team and theyrsquore helping us not only hone our survey instrument but also explore new fan behaviors that wersquoll use to expand the Leveraging Engagement model IBM jStart is once again workingwithusonreal-timesocialmediadataanalysisandwithCoachellafinishingupthisweekendwersquoretestingout a new research platform called dscout to gather interview-style multimedia data remotely If the test goes well wersquoll be able to scale our qualitative research and study fans at music festivals all around the world Wersquore thrilled to be a part of this robust group of partners as wersquore leveraging each otherrsquos expertise to generate new strategies to understand and inspire music fans

Building the city of the future is not just a matter of planning but an exercise in collective imagination World building is a participatory process borrowed from cinematic production design that taps the collective imaginary weaving together detailed and textured visions of the future into coherent and scalable urban spaces where stories of plausible reality unfold The DTLA Innovation Corridor World Building project is bringing together experts from all walks of life to imagine the future of the USC-Downtown LA corridor in 2040 This spring AIL hosted three workshops focused on Moving Making and Living The next phase will dig deeper into these themes to create a system of actions ndash activities projects policies etc ndash to make the DTLA Innovation Corridor the nexus of LArsquos imagination economy

Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality JournalismRobert Hernandez

Last year AIL Research Fellow Journalism faculty member Robert Hernandez led his experimental course ldquoGlass Journalismrdquo in developing the experimental app ldquoGlass Geniusrdquo which allows Google Glass users to speed-read the news recognize objects and provide audio reports about those objects

In the fall of 2015 Robert will be launching a new course on virtual reality and 360-degree journalism using 360-degree cameras and virtual reality hardware like the Oculus Rift and the Samsung Gear VR to explore more immersive storytelling and journalism

The AIL partnered with the creator of the Winklebeans a line of handcrafted wooden toy monsters with interchangeable magnetic pieces to explore how we might ldquotell tangible storiesrdquo with smart objects and the Internet of Things Children can assemble disassemble and reassemble the Winklebean characters to make thousandsof uniqueconfigurationswhichmakestheWinklebeansperfect for our exploration into tangible storytelling

By splicing sensors into the Winklebeansrsquo magnetic pieces and embedding a tiny PC into their chassis we transformed the wooden toys into smart objects that sync up wirelessly with a dynamic book apponaconnectedmobiledeviceWhenachildreconfiguresthetoy(forexamplewhenthechildtakesthelsquotailrsquopieceofftherearof the toy and attaches it instead to the top of the Winklebeanrsquos head) the storyline in the connected dynamic book app changes We also embedded a speaker into each toy which not only allows the Winklebean to participate in the ldquoperformancerdquo of the storytelling by adding its own commentary but also allows multiple Winklebeans to vocally react to one another when they are both synced to the same dynamic book app

About the WinklebeansWinklebeans are a small tribe of adventurous wooden monsters living in a massive old tree stump on top of Winklehill Legend has it that there used to be thousands of Winklebeans living on in a place called Winkle-isle before an event called ldquoThe Swallowingrdquo took Winkle-isle in the early part of the 19th century Now there are only six Winklebeans left five of which have never known life outside of Winklehill

Winklebeans are known amongst their animal friends for their special powers and unique ability to move exchange and create new ldquoelementsrdquo (body parts) They love exploring their forests and rivers but also wander into what appear to be abandoned human towns and cities on occasion But they always make it home to Winklehill and no one is ever left behind ldquoWinklebeans work togetherrdquo is their motto

The AIL partnered with the creator of the Winklebeans a line of handcrafted wooden toy monsters with interchangeable magnetic pieces to explore how we might ldquotell tangible storiesrdquo with smart objects and the Internet of Things Children can assemble disassemble and reassemble the Winklebean characters to make thousandsof uniqueconfigurationswhichmakestheWinklebeansperfect for our exploration into tangible storytelling

By splicing sensors into the Winklebeansrsquo magnetic pieces and embedding a tiny PC into their chassis we transformed the wooden toys into smart objects that sync up wirelessly with a dynamic book apponaconnectedmobiledeviceWhenachildreconfiguresthetoy(forexamplewhenthechildtakesthelsquotailrsquopieceofftherearof the toy and attaches it instead to the top of the Winklebeanrsquos head) the storyline in the connected dynamic book app changes We also embedded a speaker into each toy which not only allows the Winklebean to participate in the ldquoperformancerdquo of the storytelling by adding its own commentary but also allows multiple Winklebeans to vocally react to one another when they are both synced to the same dynamic book app

About the WinklebeansWinklebeans are a small tribe of adventurous wooden monsters living in a massive old tree stump on top of Winklehill Legend has it that there used to be thousands of Winklebeans living on in a place called Winkle-isle before an event called ldquoThe Swallowingrdquo took Winkle-isle in the early part of the 19th century Now there are only six Winklebeans left five of which have never known life outside of Winklehill

Winklebeans are known amongst their animal friends for their special powers and unique ability to move exchange and create new ldquoelementsrdquo (body parts) They love exploring their forests and rivers but also wander into what appear to be abandoned human towns and cities on occasion But they always make it home to Winklehill and no one is ever left behind ldquoWinklebeans work togetherrdquo is their motto

The AIL partnered with the creator of the Winklebeans a line of handcrafted wooden toy monsters with interchangeable magnetic pieces to explore how we might ldquotell tangible storiesrdquo with smart objects and the Internet of Things Children can assemble disassemble and reassemble the Winklebean characters to make thousandsof uniqueconfigurationswhichmakestheWinklebeansperfect for our exploration into tangible storytelling

By splicing sensors into the Winklebeansrsquo magnetic pieces and embedding a tiny PC into their chassis we transformed the wooden toys into smart objects that sync up wirelessly with a dynamic book apponaconnectedmobiledeviceWhenachildreconfiguresthetoy(forexamplewhenthechildtakesthelsquotailrsquopieceofftherearof the toy and attaches it instead to the top of the Winklebeanrsquos head) the storyline in the connected dynamic book app changes We also embedded a speaker into each toy which not only allows the Winklebean to participate in the ldquoperformancerdquo of the storytelling by adding its own commentary but also allows multiple Winklebeans to vocally react to one another when they are both synced to the same dynamic book app

About the WinklebeansWinklebeans are a small tribe of adventurous wooden monsters living in a massive old tree stump on top of Winklehill Legend has it that there used to be thousands of Winklebeans living on in a place called Winkle-isle before an event called ldquoThe Swallowingrdquo took Winkle-isle in the early part of the 19th century Now there are only six Winklebeans left five of which have never known life outside of Winklehill

Winklebeans are known amongst their animal friends for their special powers and unique ability to move exchange and create new ldquoelementsrdquo (body parts) They love exploring their forests and rivers but also wander into what appear to be abandoned human towns and cities on occasion But they always make it home to Winklehill and no one is ever left behind ldquoWinklebeans work togetherrdquo is their motto

The AIL partnered with the creator of the Winklebeans a line of handcrafted wooden toy monsters with interchangeable magnetic pieces to explore how we might ldquotell tangible storiesrdquo with smart objects and the Internet of Things Children can assemble disassemble and reassemble the Winklebean characters to make thousandsof uniqueconfigurationswhichmakestheWinklebeansperfect for our exploration into tangible storytelling

By splicing sensors into the Winklebeansrsquo magnetic pieces and embedding a tiny PC into their chassis we transformed the wooden toys into smart objects that sync up wirelessly with a dynamic book apponaconnectedmobiledeviceWhenachildreconfiguresthetoy(forexamplewhenthechildtakesthelsquotailrsquopieceofftherearof the toy and attaches it instead to the top of the Winklebeanrsquos head) the storyline in the connected dynamic book app changes We also embedded a speaker into each toy which not only allows the Winklebean to participate in the ldquoperformancerdquo of the storytelling by adding its own commentary but also allows multiple Winklebeans to vocally react to one another when they are both synced to the same dynamic book app

About the WinklebeansWinklebeans are a small tribe of adventurous wooden monsters living in a massive old tree stump on top of Winklehill Legend has it that there used to be thousands of Winklebeans living on in a place called Winkle-isle before an event called ldquoThe Swallowingrdquo took Winkle-isle in the early part of the 19th century Now there are only six Winklebeans left five of which have never known life outside of Winklehill

Winklebeans are known amongst their animal friends for their special powers and unique ability to move exchange and create new ldquoelementsrdquo (body parts) They love exploring their forests and rivers but also wander into what appear to be abandoned human towns and cities on occasion But they always make it home to Winklehill and no one is ever left behind ldquoWinklebeans work togetherrdquo is their motto

The AIL partnered with the creator of the Winklebeans a line of handcrafted wooden toy monsters with interchangeable magnetic pieces to explore how we might ldquotell tangible storiesrdquo with smart objects and the Internet of Things Children can assemble disassemble and reassemble the Winklebean characters to make thousandsof uniqueconfigurationswhichmakestheWinklebeansperfect for our exploration into tangible storytelling

By splicing sensors into the Winklebeansrsquo magnetic pieces and embedding a tiny PC into their chassis we transformed the wooden toys into smart objects that sync up wirelessly with a dynamic book apponaconnectedmobiledeviceWhenachildreconfiguresthetoy(forexamplewhenthechildtakesthelsquotailrsquopieceofftherearof the toy and attaches it instead to the top of the Winklebeanrsquos head) the storyline in the connected dynamic book app changes We also embedded a speaker into each toy which not only allows the Winklebean to participate in the ldquoperformancerdquo of the storytelling by adding its own commentary but also allows multiple Winklebeans to vocally react to one another when they are both synced to the same dynamic book app

About the WinklebeansWinklebeans are a small tribe of adventurous wooden monsters living in a massive old tree stump on top of Winklehill Legend has it that there used to be thousands of Winklebeans living on in a place called Winkle-isle before an event called ldquoThe Swallowingrdquo took Winkle-isle in the early part of the 19th century Now there are only six Winklebeans left five of which have never known life outside of Winklehill

Winklebeans are known amongst their animal friends for their special powers and unique ability to move exchange and create new ldquoelementsrdquo (body parts) They love exploring their forests and rivers but also wander into what appear to be abandoned human towns and cities on occasion But they always make it home to Winklehill and no one is ever left behind ldquoWinklebeans work togetherrdquo is their motto

Ourfirst-everLeveragingEngagementstudywasananalysisof thebiggestfandominsports soccer In partnership with Havas Sports amp Entertainment we surveyed fans in sixteen countries We observed fans watching Champions League and World Cup matchesindozensof differentcontextsinbothRiodeJaneiroandLosAngelesAndwe collected and analyzed millions of fan team player media and sponsor brand tweets

The data taught us that there are six basic soccer fan mindsets Some fans are louder than others Some are more social Some are more analytical Individual fansflowbetweenmindsetsbothgraduallyastheirlifecircumstancesevolveandinstantaneously when they bump into the right friend at the right time and we believe thatwersquovebeguntouncoverthespecificsituationaltriggers(whichfriendatwhichtime for example) that can inspire fans from each mindset group to become their most deeply engaged fan-selves
