360 Photos Overview

• 360 x 180 degree fully spherical images

• Born from a project to create 360 videos (T. Schmittler) started by the RP group to minimise machine visits and radiation doses received.

• Photos taken by Maximilien Brice (DG/CO) & EN/MEF/DC.

• EN-MEF exploring the potential for optimising remote visualisation of machine layouts and components.

Polygons can be added around each visible component. The highlighted area and element layout name display when hovering the mouse over the component. Clicking, links to the relevant slot in the layout database.

Integration in the Layout Database

• The Layout Database is divided into regions (machine sections) and slots (components, such as magnets, beam instrumentation etc…)

• 360 panoramas show a section (or part of a section) of the machine, and so can be linked to the corresponding region in the Layout Database.

• Only ‘interesting’ areas taken to minimise the total number of panoramas requiring processing.

• High quality images – Far superior to Google Street View and videos.

Integration in the Layout Database

360 panorama is integrated into the region and is fully navigable.

Current Status

~1200 panoramas captured to date.

PS, PSB, AD completed. In Layout DB

SPS LSS captured. Integration in Layout DB to follow (mid 2015)

LHC LSS completed. In Layout DB (half cells)

Current Status

• Different machines are at different stages of integration.

• BT, BTM and BTY lines are available. BI to be captured.

• Polygons (highlighted equipment) only added for PS Ring at the current time. Feasibility study to understand the time requirement. • Not foreseen for other machines for the moment.

• Trial creation of visual region maps to aid navigation is ongoing (AD machine and some LHC half cells)

• To be extended with appropriate maps/drawings and detail.

Current Status

• EN-MEF professional equipment:• Canon EOS 5D Mark II Camera + Fish-eye lens.

• Tripod, 90 degree rotator, remote shutter control.

• Software:• PTGui ©, Kolor ®© Autopano & Panotour licenses.

• Collaboration with Maximilien Brice from DG/CO. • Possible to utilise their equipment and expertise on request.

• Training and resources:• 3 staff in EN trained to capture photos suitable for panoramas (2 in MEF-

DC, 1 in MEF-INT).

• Currently a team of 2 in EN-MEF-DC able to handle the panorama preparation and integration.

Future

• Processing and integration of panoramas is as automated as possible with current software.• Efficiency improvements through increased automation to be

investigated.

• Training of additional personnel in EN-MEF for photo capture and virtual tour preparation.

• Investigate the possibility of remote capturing for high radiation zones (TIM in LHC, robots or similar…).• Cost / benefit to be accurately assessed.

• Investigate the interfaces with Digital Mock-ups, Survey scans, GIS, and other tools…
