Week 13:

Eucharist, Chapter 1
● The Sacraments of Initiation are Baptism,
Confirmation, and the Eucharist.
● Baptism washes away our sins and gives us new life,
and Confirmation helps us to live as Jesus’
followers.
● The Eucharist, the Sacrament of the Body and
Blood of Christ, is the most important Sacrament
of the Church
• As a family, talk about a way you can show Jesus
that you want to be his followers.
• Talk as a family about the Baptism of each family
member. Topics may include identifying the
godparents and telling why they were chosen,
anything memorable about the event, and why it
was important to be baptized.
• On a calendar in your home, mark days when you
will spend time preparing for First Eucharist as a
family, even if it involves something as simple as
practicing a prayer.
Week 14:

Eucharist, Chapter 2
Or
Brother
Francis
DVD The Mass
● In the Mass the gifts of bread and wine become
the Body and Blood of Christ (body, blood, soul and
divinity)
● Jesus Christ gave us the Eucharist to make us one
with him and save us from sin.
● The Mass has four parts: Introductory Rites,
Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of the Eucharist, and
Concluding Rite. The Liturgy of the Word and the
Liturgy of the Eucharist are the two main parts of
the Mass.
• With your family share and discuss a specific
prayer or action that you recall from the Mass.
• Plan a family event, such as a special meal, to follow
the next Sunday Mass.
Week 15:
● Jesus came so that we all may be saved from sin.
● During the celebration of the Eucharist, Jesus’

sacrifice is made present again.
● Serious since, or mortal sins, must be confessed in
the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation
before we can receive the Eucharist.
• Pray the Confiteor as a family. Name the part of the Mass in which it is prayed.
• Encourage family members to forgive each other
for any past hurts
Week 16:
1/31-2/4
Eucharist, Chapter 4
● God created us in his image.
● Sunday is the Lord’s Day. It is a day to honor and
worship God.
● In the Mass, we praise and thank God through our
words and actions for all the blessings he has given
us.
• What are the gifts from God that you and your
family are thankful for? Take turns naming these
gifts. Conclude with a family prayer of thanks to
God.
• As a family, practice singing or praying the Gloria
together.
Week 17:
2/7-2/11 NO CLASS
on 2/10
(Ash
Wednesday)
● In class, your child made “Good Deed Beads” or
“Sacrifice Beads” to keep track of good deeds and
sacrifices they can make every day to grow closer
to Christ
• Review as a family the concept of “sacrifice”.
Think of ways you can make small sacrifices as a
family to grow closer to Christ (giving up your
“turn” on the TV or video game to a sibling, doing
chores without being asked that were not
“assigned” to you, etc.)
Week 18:
2/14-
2/18
Eucharist, Chapter 5
● The Bible contains the Word of God and teaches us
how to live according to God’s laws.
● Hearing God’s Word in the Liturgy of the Word
helps prepare us to receive the Body and Blood of
Christ.
● The Gospels have a special place in the Liturgy of
the Word because they tell us about Jesus and
because Christ is their center
• Together read a short prophecy of Isaiah’s from
the Old Testament (see Isaiah 50:6 or 53:5). Talk
about how the prophecy was accomplished in the
life of Jesus.
• Together, find out the names of the 27 books of
the New Testament
• Look up the Scripture readings for this Sunday’s
Mass. Select one of the readings to read as a
family.

Week 19:
2/21-
2/25
Eucharist, Chapter 6
● We express our faith publicly by praying the
Creed—either the Apostles’ Creed or the Nicene
Creed.
● In this prayer, we state that we believe in the
Blessed Trinity.
● The Blessed Trinity is one God in three Divine
Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the
Holy Spirit
• Read aloud Mark 10:46-52, with each family
member reading the part of a different person.
• Pray the Nicene or Apostles’ Creed as a family.
• As a family, tell stories about the Baptisms of
family members.
Week 20:
2/28-3/3
Eucharist, Chapter 7
• Jesus instituted the Eucharist at the Last Supper
• Jesus himself is truly present (body, blood, soul,
and divinity) in the Eucharist
• It is through the power of the Holy Spirit, acting
through the priest, that the bread and wine
become wholly and entirely the Body and Blood of
Christ.
• Read 2 different accounts of the Last Supper:
Luke 22:14-20 and John 13:1-15. (Also Mark 14:22-
24 and Matthew 26:18-28). What details are
mentioned in one account that are not mentioned in
the other?
• As a family, talk about what it means to have
Christ truly present within you.
• Talk about a relative or a friend of the family
whom you all agree is a good example of the
presence of Christ.

ruling over the world.
● The Lord’s Prayer sums up all that Jesus taught us.
● When we pray the Lord’s Prayer at Mass, we are
preparing our hearts to receive Jesus in the
• Try to make the Lord’s Prayer a daily prayer for
the family. For example, include it in your bedtime
prayers.
• Together design a prayer card with the Lord’s
Prayer on it. Have a different family member keep

the Lord’s Prayer daily.
Week 22:

4/14
Eucharist, Chapter 9
● Holy Communion is the Body and Blood of Christ.
● Receiving the Eucharist strengthens our unity with
Jesus Christ and the Church.
● We call Jesus the “Lamb of God” because he
sacrificed himself for our sins.
• As a family, read Luke 24:13-32 and Luke 24:36-
49. These readings describe appearances of the
Risen Jesus. After reading both stories, take
turns identifying a favorite part and explain the
reason for the choice.
• Talk about any prayers that people in your family
pray as they prepare to receive Holy Communion,
such as the Act of Contrition or the Act of Faith.
Week 23:
4/17-
4/21
Eucharist, Chapter 10
● The Sacraments nourish us so we can live as God
calls us to.
● Celebrating the Sacrament of the Eucharist helps
us to be more like Jesus.
● At the end of Mass, the priest blesses us and
sends us to be Christ to the world.
• Find where the “breaking of the bread” occurs in
Acts 2:41-47 and Luke 24:13-32. As a family,
discuss the following: What does the breaking of
the bread in these stories remind you of? When
do we “break bread”?
• Together come up with ideas of how your family
can be Christ for the world.
• Have each family member name one person with
whom they can share the love of Jesus.

Review
• Your child’s class held a review session and may have
practiced receiving unconsecrated hosts in the
church or chapel (space permitting)
• As part of the review, your child’s class watched The Bread of Life DVD from the Brother Francis collection
As a family, review the rules for receiving Holy Communion.
Rules for Receiving Holy Communion:
• We may receive Holy Communion only if we are a
baptized Catholic
• We must be in the state of grace. This means that
we have not committed any mortal sins. If we have
committed any mortal sins, we must first confess
them and receive absolution in the Sacrament of
Reconciliation
• We are obligated to fast for one hour before the
time we receive Holy Communion. This means not
drinking or eating anything except water or medicine.
• We are obligated to attend Mass on Sundays and
Holy Days of Obligation and are encouraged to
receive Holy Communion as often as possible.
***Please discuss with your child on whether he/she will be
receiving the Precious Blood. It is not necessary for them to
receive both the Body and Blood of Christ at First
Communion. If your child chooses to receive the Precious
Blood of Christ, it will taste like wine and not grape juice!
Many students are not prepared for the taste of the
Precious Blood of Christ since we cannot practice this in
class. If you wish for your child to receive the Eucharist
under both species, please prepare your child for this at
home.
