INTRODUCTION

GCF and PTCRB were established to certify cellular devices along the lines of

3GPP t h l i d th3GPP technologies and others.

GCF started activities in 1999 andis operated as a legal company.

PTCRB had already been founded in 1997 andPTCRB had already been founded in 1997 andis managed as an interest group.


WHY GCF

GCF f d d b th E N t k t d h d t GCF was founded by the European Network operators and handset manufacturers promoting “test once, use anywhere”. This was regarded as being necessary in developing markets for new device categories in order to facilitate market entry for traditional mobile handset and order to facilitate market entry for traditional mobile handset and communication products.

By demonstrating that a new device has achieved GCF’s recognized benchmark for conformance and interoperability a manufacturer will be benchmark for conformance and interoperability, a manufacturer will be better equipped to attract the support of operator partners or other distribution channels when introducing its product to new markets.

GCF is operated on a global basis and not limited to a specific region.


WHY PTCRB?

PTCRB t d b N th A i t t t bli h thi d t PTCRB was created by North American operators to establish a third party certification, giving confidence to the operator that the certified device meets a minimum set of requirements established by the members. This provides assurance to the operator that their roaming partner’s device will provides assurance to the operator that their roaming partner s device will not cause harm to their network.

PTCRB’s purpose is to provide the framework within which 3GPP GERAN, UTRAN and E UTRAN device certification can take place for its members UTRAN, and E-UTRAN device certification can take place for its members. This includes, but is not limited to, determination of the test specifications and methods necessary to support the certification process for GERAN, UTRAN, and E-UTRAN devices. ,

PTCRB is operated in North America especially in the USA and Canada.


WHO ARE THE MEMBERS?

WHAT CAN BE CERTIFIED?

GCF and PTCRB certifications apply to:- Any wireless cellular device- Cellular modules- Devices embedding cellular certified Devices embedding cellular certified

modulesThis includes smartphones, tablets, notebooks, vertical M2M devices and ,many more.

GCF has also defined a special program GCF has also defined a special program for dedicated SW clients and applications mainly promoted by the GSM Association.


WHAT ROLES HAVE BEEN DEFINED?

GCF has established an organization that operates the scheme from a Steering Group level supported by its Board Technical work is executed in specific Group level supported by its Board. Technical work is executed in specific Agreement Groups that deal with the major aspects of conformance, field trial interoperability and performance.

Important roles within the certification process are:

ACE (Assessment Capable Entity): The ACE determines the test plan and checks completion of requirement set.

RTO (Recognized Test Organization):The accredited RTO executes the testing on the device to be certified.

DCM (Device Certification Manager):DCM (Device Certification Manager):The DCM is responsible for the device certification process.

GCF office:The GCF office runs the certification program and hosts the related websites and databases.


WHAT ROLES HAVE BEEN DEFINED?

PTCRB hosts one main body called “PTCRB” to manage the overall program. It is supported by CTIA (Cellular Telecommunication Industry Association) CTIA is supported by CTIA (Cellular Telecommunication Industry Association). CTIA runs the certification process for PTCRB. The technical work is executed within the PTCRB Validation Group (PVG).

Important roles within the certification process are:

PTCRB accredited test lab:The PTCRB accredited test lab acts as the primary contact for device manufacturersbeing guided through the necessary technical process. The lab determines the test plan and executes the testing involved.

At GCF, new assessment requirements are proposed by members to the Steering Groupto the Steering Group.

Once approved, new GCF work items are opened and handed overto the related technical Agreement Group for implementation.

Any removal of legacy requirements is managed by the Agreement Groups.

All GCF assessment criteria are maintained based on the following main tools:

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN GCF AND PTCRB

GCF is based on the collaboration of big network operators and large device manufacturerslarge device manufacturers.

PTCRB defines all requirements on the basis of thenetwork operators involved.

GCF is financed from membership fees. No fees apply for product certification.

PTCRB does not require membership fees. Manufacturers pay fees to CTIA per certification.
