Our sympathy goes out to Dan’s family and lodge. Staying in the same context, my deepest sympathy goes out to anyone affected by the tragedy in Connecticut. The Johnson City Christmas Parade was great. We participated with all the HCA homes in the area. Elroy the Elk and the Drug Awareness Trailer participated as well. Fun was had by all. Thank you to those who made Doug’s Fish Fry a total success. The bake sale was great and those who came to the lodge had a fun afternoon. Mom’s House Christmas Party was also great. Thanks to Sharon Flint and her family for a great meal, cake and gifts for the children. Thanks to Santa and Hope for participating. The smiles on the kids’ faces were precious. The HCA Party was also very nice. Alicia Beck and her family did an excellent job preparing the meal, buying gifts and Santa made his appearance as well. Thanks guys, great job. My ER Christmas party was a total success. Thanks to everyone who attended. A special thanks to my wife, Rita, and Alicia for their hard work in preparing the event. On Sunday, I accompanied Santa and many of our lodge members to the Oxford Veterans’ Home. I have been an Elk for 10 years and this was my first time going there. What a facility and great people. The Dictionary Project Presentation

The Johnson City Elks and the Johnson City Rotary Club joined forces to purchase and distribute dictionaries to the 3rd graders of Johnson City Intermediate School. Thank you to Elks Alicia and Leanna Beck, Jerry Smith, Kathy and Doug Neiss and our ER Dino Christopher – and Bob Olcott, Ron Hebner and John Moynihan members of the JC Rotary for presenting the Dictionaries.

The students were so excited to receive the dictionaries and many of them could not wait to look up some words. It was a fun and moving experience for all of us.

Donna Converse, the 3rd grade teacher who coordinated the presentation said in an e-mail: “Thank you, thank you, thank you…The kids were beyond thrilled with their books and were so excited to share the wealth of information they provide. The teachers were very appreciative too. I was so pleased to see members of both organizations there for the presentation.”

SOME QUOTES FOR THE NEW YEAR

Youth is when you're allowed to stay up late on New Year's Eve. Middle age is when you're forced to. ~Bill Vaughn

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves. ~Bill Vaughan

Many people look forward to the new year for a new start on old habits. ~Author Unknown

A New Year's resolution is something that goes in one year and out the other. ~Author Unknown

Be at War with your Vices, at Peace with your Neighbours, and let every New-Year find you a better Man. ~Quoted in Benjamin Franklin's 1755 Poor Richard's Almanac, December (Thanks, Garson

O'Toole ofquoteinvestigator.com!)

No one ever regarded the First of January with indifference. It is that from which all date their time, and count upon what is left. It is the nativity of our common Adam. ~Charles Lamb

New Year's Day is every man's birthday. ~Charles Lamb

Never tell your resolution beforehand, or it's twice as onerous a duty. ~John Selden

Year's end is neither an end nor a beginning but a going on, with all the wisdom that experience can instill in us. ~Hal Borland

Cheers to a new year and another chance for us to get it right. ~Oprah Winfrey

Ring out the old, ring in the new, Ring, happy bells, across the snow:

The year is going, let him go; Ring out the false, ring in the true.

~Alfred, Lord Tennyson, 1850

Did You Know?

• Did you know our Wendy Turner has been certified in equine therapy and massage? After attending a comprehensive training program, Wendy can treat and soothe horses through massage therapy! Congratulations Wendy for realizing this dream!

• Did you know Dolene Riley’s granddaughter Brit King received her master’s degree in education from SUNY Binghamton? Proud Grandma was there for this important event!

• Did you know Gail Ghinger was recognized for her efforts on saving a horse from slaughter? Gail was instrumental in ensuring this horse had an alternative! Gail was awarded a bracelet with a beautiful sentiment. Gail also supports the Humane Societies in our area. During a recent event Gail supplied cat beds and food to anyone who adopted a cat or kitten. Thanks Gail for being an advocate for those who have no voice.

• Did you know Johnson City and Vestal Lodges were recognized in the “Good News” section of December 23 paper? It recapped the event where Broome County awarded a citation to our lodges for the work we do within our communities. The article is posted on the board at the lodge.

• Did you know the lodge Santa and Elves were busy over the month of December? There are so many people to thank for their kindness and charity. Please, if I forget anyone, let me know! We couldn’t do what we do without your help!

• Hope, Sharon Flint and Paula Hoover with the Hannah and Sierra organized, shopped and hosted a party for Mom’s House! They hosted 29 children and families and of course Santa Scotty made the day!

• Special thanks to Bob Belveg and Gerri Jurkiw. Your generous support allowed us to purchase many needed items for our HCA friends! Many thanks to our wonderful friend Joyce Fitzgerald! Our HCA friends asked for “character bedding”. She made the most beautiful pillowcases for them! In two days she had delivered them to the lodge! Thank you to Sue Whalen found the Cabbage Patch dolls which made Christmas so Merry for our HCA friend.

• Thank you to our card leagues!! YOU provided funds for the HCA Christmas event! We were able to provide so many needed items!

• Thank you to Barbara Morgan! Barbara is a retired special education teacher and a new member! She was a wonderful support for this event. The other elves were Jason Beck (gravy master) Bill Beck, Dino, Russ Ryan (he’s amazing in the kitchen!), Ken Jennison, and Hope. Thanks to Charlotte for the amazing cookies! And of course there was a visit by our wonderful Santa Scotty!

• Did you know Emilie Klein is a member of Temple Concord? Emilie assists the 2nd and 3rd grade religious education teacher. Emilie was telling one of the little girls about our lodge and the organizations we help. The little girl stated, “I want to help the HCA and Mom’s House! She inspired others in her class to help. The children collected and donated $17.00 to the lodge, most of it in pennies! .Emilie stated she is so proud of these children and their unselfishness. Thank you Emilie the lodge is so grateful. **As I write this the Newton, CT events are still fresh in my mind. I think of the beautiful generous spirit of Emilie’s class and the promise of what wonderful citizens they will become.

Twenty members went to the Vet's home on Sunday the 16th to deliver presents with Santa. Carols were sang, Christmas charades played, and presents handed out to Apple Neighborhood.

Memorial Sunday Recap:

The Johnson City Elks Lodge Memorial Service was held on December 2, 2012 at 1 pm. We had 1 member pass away since last December and we honored all of our 15 departed members since our institution in 2001. 8 of the 15 families were in attendance.

The Officers were well prepared and carried out their duties with dignity and respect. Our guest speakers were NYSEA Vice President Sharon Flint who recited the” Jolly Corks Toast”, Ken Jennison, South Central District Memorial Sunday Chairman delivered the “11 O’clock Toast” and Paul Reger, our Lodge Secretary honored us with a reading of “The Vacant Chair”. Our Lodge Chaplain, Alicia Beck was asked to act as our Guest speaker because of her deep faith and her love for the principles of Elkdom. She spoke of each departed member expressing how they were important to our Lodge family and how each loss impacts our Lodge and reminding us all that “Elks are Never Forgotten”.

We were honored to have Village of Johnson City Mayor Greg Deemie, Village Justice Rick Miller, Jr. and Village Trustee Rick Ballas in attendance. NYSEA Past State President Phil Holowacz was also present.

Micah Neiss accompanied by Richard Wurth on guitar sang ‘On Eagles Wings’ and ‘Be Not Afraid’ and our very own member Leona Stevens played ‘Amazing Grace’ on the bagpipes.

Each family was presented with an Evergreen Cross, symbolic of our Lodges remembrance of their loved ones and the personalized candle used in our Memorial Service Ceremony.

A luncheon was held after the ceremony, and many guests stayed for a gift wrapping party where we wrapped the many gifts we donate to local charities.
