IN OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER THE ART GALLERY OF WA WILL BE HOME TO TWELVE INTIMATE PERFORMANCES TAILOR-MADE FOR AN AUDIENCE OF ONE.

Entry to the Day Spa is for ticket-holders only. You must arrive no later than 15 minutes prior to your performance start time to access the spa.

Day Spa opening hours:

11.00am – 4.30pm Wednesday – Sunday

For enquiries contact: [email protected]

Curated by Sarah Rowbottam and Kelli Mccluskey. Co-presented by the Art Gallery of Western Australia.

Proximity Festival 2015 is twelve days of experimental performances, intimate gallery tours, caffeine-fuelled discussions and a very special opening party.

Our fourth annual program brings together twelve emerging and established artists from Australia and the United Kingdom who sensitively provoke you to reconsider what performance can be.

For the first time Proximity will take place during the day, with intimate one-on-one experiences embedded into the daily happenings of the collections, hallways, rooftop and hidden spaces of the Gallery.

In these spaces, you’ll be invited to encounter a series of 15-minute performances by artists who aren’t afraid to take risks in very intimate ways.

Go on a date as your online self, stargaze in daylight, connect with a forgotten landscape using water as your instrument, surrender yourself to a transformative abduction and indulge in the humour of a family sex drama.

We’ve built this festival from the ground up with one important person in mind — you.

Raised by BrutalismLeon Ewing (WA)

When you’re here, I’m nowhereBrett Smith (WA)

A solo sound and light journey into the unknown. It might be for you, about you, or for someone else entirely.

IS THIS FOR ME? For those who don’t mind being immersed in a moment of intimacy.

You will always be wanted by meEmily Parsons-Lord (NSW)

IS THIS FOR ME? A reflective conversation, tailored for all comfort levels.

Let’s go to the back courtyard of AGWA and get up to some intimate mischief. We’re throwing an opening party filled with one-off performances and unique

experiences with some of Perth’s local favourites and you’re invited. Full program announced in October.

MASTER CLASS WITH HELEN COLE (UK)

All events – Art Gallery of WA

Please register proximityfestival.com

Wake up and start your morning with caffeine-fuelled discussions, collective actions and intimate gallery tours led by interesting people worth meeting. We’ve got something to talk about, but we don’t want to bore you with the usual set-up so we’ve introduced a few distinctive ways to share it with you.

I didn’t ask to see this Friday 30 October 10am – 11.30am

Bemused, curious or downright disapproving of random acts of art in public spaces? We discuss the implications and possibilities of making living artworks in public institutions. How do we navigate the additional layer of passers-by as complicit spectators, OH&S obligations and governing agencies? Gather in the concourse for a discussion that you need to get on your feet for.

Obsessed with the record Wednesday 4 November 10am – 11.30am

Frame it, shoot it, post it, play it. How do we document one-on-one or participatory performances when fundamental to their existence is the live exchange that happens between audience and performer? Join us for a session exploring issues relating to creating legacies of live work.

Audience tourSaturday 7 November 10am – 11.30am

Not sure what to expect with Proximity performances? We turn the typical artist talk on its head and place it confidently into the hands of our audiences. This Gallery tour invites you to walk around AGWA with select Proximity participants who share their accounts of this year’s program, followed by Q&A between the artist and audience.

Presented by Proximity Festival and CIA studios

Sunday 18 – Tuesday 20 October, 10am – 5pm

$250 + gst Sunday – Tuesday (both sessions) $65 + gst Tuesday only

For you or with you, not to you or at you Sunday 18 & Monday 19 October

What’s so exhilarating about making one-on-one and participatory performance? Why does an audience of one fill us with fear and excitement in equal measures and what are some of the strategies and processes for making this artform? Find out at this three-day intensive led by Helen Cole, pvi collective and Proximity Festival.

SUITABLE FOR: performance makers, artists, students (18+) from all disciplines interested in live-art and participatory practice.

Dear city, together we will imagine Tuesday 20 October

Producers, curators, directors: how do you create the conditions for impossible projects to happen? Using detailed case studies from Helen’s career, this session will focus on how to find the right team and partners, and empower them to share in your goal. Let’s find collective ways to courageously weather an uncertain future and make radical ideas real.

SUITABLE FOR: emerging to established producers, curators, artists, artistic directors, community arts workers.

AboutProximity Festival is the first platform in Australia dedicated to the creation of one-on-one intimate performances. An artist-run initiative, Proximity provides critical peer support, encouraging artists from all disciplines to experiment with new modes of practice in the creation of participatory art. Each year a venue is taken over in its entirety and re-purposed with performances in hidden and forgotten spaces. Twelve artists are selected for the program annually and participate in the Proximity Lab, a two-week residency at the venue facilitated by the Proximity curators and guest provocateurs prior to the public Festival season. This process encourages artists to step beyond their artform comfort zones and provides a space for skill sharing and experimentation prior to the performance season.
