Two sides of Gratitude Last week I shared the poem my parish priest recited to us every year, “forgive me when I whine…” that highlights all the many things we have to be thankful for that we often overlook. Things like sight, hearing, limbs, end up being big deals that we want to remember to be grateful for. One side of gratitude is to say thank you more often for the gifts in our lives. The other side of gratitude is living the life that others can be thankful for. Sometimes people seem not to be grateful for, or even notice, the good we do. So, it can be discouraging to keep doing good; however, we don’t do good because it’s easy, but because it good and beautiful. How blessed we are for all the moms for their momming and dads for their dadding; the traffic light controllers who have 99% of stoplights working 99% of the time. We complain about the frustrations our mom, dad, or traffic lights cause us, but I sure hope they don’t give up all the good they do most of the time. I sure hope you don’t give up following Christ and doing the Good because you are going un- or under-appreciated. This Thanksgiving, with Advent beginning next Sunday, I want to thank all of you who are underappreciated. Thank you to all of you who have met discouragement with courage and anonymity with deep faith.

Mother Teresa's Anyway Poem People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered; Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives; Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies; Succeed anyway. If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;

Be honest and frank anyway. What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;

Build anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;

Be happy anyway. The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;

Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;

Give the world the best you've got anyway. You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God; It was never between you and them anyway.

Faith Enrichment

Another resource now available to parishioners, is an online catechetical program through the University of Steubenville. There, they have 12, 1 hr. courses (and more) that take you through college level classes and are actually taught by the best professors at Steubenville, and you can go at your own pace. It would be awesome if many adults took up this opportunity and then wanted to get involved with our youth ministry programs so we can better prepare our youth to engage the world with Faith. Go to: franciscanathome.com to check out this resource. The parish has purchased a parish membership which allows you to sign up for free. Call the parish office with questions. Have you checked out OUR GIFT TO YOU? Your own formed.org subscription! This parish gift provides you with at-home access to the best Catholic content around. Look for audio talks, movies, eBooks, and video-based studies from trusted providers like the Augustine Institute, Ignatius Press, Catholic Answers and more—all from the comfort of home and on one,

MASTER PLAN UPDATE: You may have noticed some scaffolding and construction happening around the church. By the providence of God and the charity of an anonymous donor, we received a donation of $500,000 this summer for stained glass window restoration, exterior repairs and capital improvements as they relate to our Master Plan. This generous donation made the repairs you’re seeing possible. The work is expected to continue during business hours for the next four weeks. To maintain the safety of students, staff, daily Mass goers and passers-by, our contractor will close portions of our Alameda and 54th sidewalks during work hours. Sidewalks will re-open each weekend to accommodate Saturday and Sunday foot traffic. This project is part of the campus-wide Master Plan we developed in 2017—a strategy that guides us in being good stewards of what’s been handed down to us and addresses the needs of our aging buildings. The plan provides a concept for a revitalized

Abortion Pill (RU486)

A recently updated FDA report revealed that, as of December 31, 2018, there have been 24 deaths associated with the "abortion pill" Mifeprex (the two-drug combination of mifepristone and misoprostol), rather than the earlier figure of 22 deaths. To date, nearly 4,200 "adverse events" have been detailed, including 24 deaths, 97 ectopic pregnancies, 1042 hospitalizations, 599 blood transfusions, and 412 infections. A 2011 peer-review survey of 22 studies showed abortion increases the likelihood of depression, anxiety, and reckless behavior such as alcoholism, drug use, and suicide.

Dr. Donna Harrison of the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists laments, "These 24 women are otherwise healthy women who are now dead because they took Mifeprex. [Abortionists are] giving you Mifeprex to kill your baby, and sometimes it kills you." A Planned Parenthood study found that at least one woman is seriously injured from the abortion pill daily.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, in 2014, the abortion pill accounted for 31 percent of all non-hospital abortions and 45 percent of abortions before nine weeks gestation. Millions of unborn babies have died worldwide as a result of this deadly drug combination. www.lifenews.com

SVDP AT ST. ROSE

The St. Rose Conference of St. Vincent de Paul started in 1931...88 years ago. As Vincentians, we are asked to serve the poor within the boundaries of our Parish. This may include people who are experiencing material poverty caused by unemployment, sickness or disability, other social conditions or social poverty caused by aging, loneliness, or isolation. We have a motto: “No work of Charity is foreign to the Society.” These are the things we do:

• Make home deliveries of food several days per week • Pay for utilities and/or rent when requested • Offer fresh produce, bread, eggs, meat, etc to our friends at Hollywood East, where most

of our clients reside, every Wednesday in a shopping style Fresh Food Pantry feeding 45-65 people weekly

• Offer non-perishable goods like soup, sauces, pasta, canned veggies, fruits, juices, and health and bath aids to our friends at HWE every Thursday in a shopping style pantry feeding 40-50 people weekly.

• Organize and implement the annual St. Rose Food Drive in November. • Organize, implement, and deliver Christmas food boxes to over 100 families needing

assistance. • Offering financial support to other conferences needing financial support.

Annually, we, as Vincentians, are asked to renew our commitment to:

• Witness to Jesus’s boundless love for the poor, the lonely, the suffering and deprived, those without faith and those who feel unloved.

• Firmly resolve to treasure warm friendship and unity within the Society • Seek and find the forgotten, the suffering or the deprived so that we can bring them

Christ’s love • Be generous with our time, our possessions, and ourselves in our mission of charity.

At St. Rose we feed approximately 400-500 people each month. In December that number swells with the distribution of over 100 food boxes to families in Portland. We also provide rent or utilities assistance when our budget allows. At this time both our cupboards and coffers are getting pretty bare. Please consider donating food items for our pantry or cash/check in the attached envelope so that we may continue to support the poor in our neighborhood. The back of this flyer lists suggested donations for every week of the year. Of course, anything on the list at any time is also much appreciated! Thank you for your past and continued support of this important mission at St. Rose. May God bless each of you! Please consider joining this wonderful mission. Please contact Karen Pinder at [email protected] for more information. We would LOVE to have you as part of the St. Rose Conference of St. Vincent de Paul!
