24 Gold CoinsObjective: You will put yourself in someone else’s shoes in order to use your time wisely and enjoy your life.

Drill:

1. Get your advisory journal and a writing utensil.

2. Title your page: 24 Gold Coins

Imagine this…

• A man was given six months to live, yet his outlook on life was inspiring. He was asked how he could stay so positive knowing he only had a short time to live. He shared these thoughts:

• "Each day when I wake up, I receive twenty-four gold coins, one for each hour of the day. I have to spend some of those coins for eating, sleeping, time with my family, and taking care of the day's responsibilities. I choose to spend some of my daily hours (coins) having fun and helping others. At the end of each day, there are usually a couple of special gold coins left over. I spend these with particular care.“

• How would you spend your 24 gold coins?

What an invaluable life lesson for us. We live in a hectic, "there is never enough time to get everything done" world. Our future success, and that of our children, will be determined by how wisely we invest our daily gold coins.

Questions for discussion:

1. How did you spend your gold coins yesterday?

2. How will you spend your gold coins today? List 24 numbers. What have you done with each hour, what could you do?

3. How would you spend your gold coins if you had the same diagnosis?

4. How you might spend your coins more wisely?

5. Without any indication of how long of a life you will live, how will you make sure that it is quality time?

6. Quotes for inspiration:

"The time is always right to do what is right." - Martin Luther King

“Stop acting as if life is a rehearsal. Live this day as if it were your last. The past is over and gone. The future is not guaranteed.” -Wayne Dyer

Create a Bucket List:List 20+ things you want to do before you die:

A. What are your goals for your life?

B. What do you want to create?

C. What do you want to accomplish?

D. Where do you want to go?

E. What do you want to see?

F. Who do you want to spend time with?

G. How could you start this year? Month? Today?

H. How do you enjoy your life right now? How could you enjoy it more? (Without changing the things that you must do.)

Here is How to Make a Teen Bucket List:

1. Do some pre-thinking time alone. It is good to reflect for yourself before diving into a group activity.

2. Sit down with people you like and trust.  Sometimes you forget things you have always said you want to do.  Parents and best friends are great reminders!

3. Think outside the box.  Do not stick with normal, really push yourself to try something new and get out of your comfort zone!

4. Be reasonable.  Be out there, but do not pick something you will be too hard (or expensive) to do, this will set you up for disappointment.

5. Make a timeline! You want to make sure this list doesn’t just stay on paper.  Start planning and setting dates and make sure your friends keep you on top of it.
