Authentic Learning

Authentic Learning activities match the real-world tasks of professionals in practice as nearly as possible. Learning rises to the level of authenticity when it asks students to work actively with abstract concepts, facts, and formulae inside a realistic—and highly social—context mimicking “the ordinary practices of the [disciplinary] culture.”

Direct Instruction Guided Practice

Direct Instruction is an approach to teaching. It is skills-oriented and the teaching practices it implies are teacher-directed…

[C]ognitive skills are broken down into small units, sequenced deliberately, and taught explicitly…

These teaching functions include teaching in small steps with student practice after each step, guiding students during initial practice, and ensuring that all students experienced a high level of successful practice.
