On behalf of the organising committee for the Exploration, Resource
and Mining Geology Conference 2013, and jointly hosted by The
Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM) and The
Geological Society of London, I invite you to register your attendance at
this inaugural conference being held in Cardiff, United Kingdom from
the 21 – 22 October.
We are operating in challenging times and with reducing commodity
prices and a difficult project funding regime, there are few mining
projects where an easy dollar is to be made. There are particular
challenges that must be faced, including the need for cost-effective
discovery strategies and methods; evaluation and extraction of often
lower-grade geologically and/or metallurgically complex deposits;
understanding time-orebody variability to achieve the optimum mine
plan; and predicting grades in geologically complex deposits.
This inaugural conference will include workshops on topics such as:
Concepts in the Sampling of Gold Deposits; Mining Geology and Grade
Control; Mineral Resource Reporting; and Geology in the
Exploration-Resource Process. Post-conference tours will include site
visits to look at tin-tungsten mineralisation in South West England, and
gold and base metals in Wales. A breakfast seminar on day two looks at
recent advances in Geostatistics.

T2: Geology & Evaluation of Tin & Tungsten Mineralisation in South West England

The South West England Orefield has historically been of great economicimportance, yielding 2.5 Mt of tin and 2 Mt of copper. It hosts world-classgranite-related hydrothermal mineral deposits. This three day field trip aimsto inspect a number of key deposit styles, including tin-tungsten sheetedveins; tourmaline-tin lodes; replacement/skarn tin deposits; and in-situkaolinite (china clay) deposits. Discussions will focus on deposit genesis andevaluation strategies.

This half day tour is a great opportunity to visit a unique opencast coal sitewithin the South Wales coal field, just 35 km to the north of Cardiff. The visitwill allow participants to see in operation a working opencast coal operationwith specific reference to the following:• The recovery of a well drilled and defined Welsh Dry Steam Coal• Key aspects of the working method and site reclamation with important
local planning factors and regulations• Look at key geotechnical factors that have influenced the site design• Review of the recovery and quality of the coal with reference to the supply
contracts.
T4: Dolaucothi Gold Mines: The only known Roman Gold Mines inthe UK

This one day field trip to the Dolaucothi Gold Mines heads north from Cardiffto a mine that lies close to the Cothi River on the southern limits of theCentral Wales Lead-Zinc field.
The host rocks are heavily folded and faulted of Upper Ordovician and basalSilurian age and the deposit is usually classified as a ‘Turbidite-Hosted GoldDeposit’.
The visit will not only highlight the geological controls of the goldmineralization but will also explain the mining history of the site whichranges from Roman and possibly Medieval, through to Modern.

Snowden is pleased to offer this one-day course offered by an expert in thefield of gold deposit sampling. The course will provide a broad review of theconceptual and practical issues in gold sampling. It has been speciallydesigned for anyone involved or about to become involved at the advancedexploration, evaluation and/or exploitation stages of a project. Samplingprogrammes along the mine value chain aim ultimately to deliver economictonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. Samplingprotocols must be designed to suit the style of gold mineralisation in question.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancellations must be submitted in writing to The
Geological Society before Monday 23 September
in order to receive a refund. Cancellations
received before Monday 23 September will be
given a refund less 30% to cover administration
costs. Any cancellations after this date will forfeit
all funds.
An organisation may send an alternative delegate
if registration has been paid and the registered
person is unable to attend due to unforeseen
