Mission:SLIsupportstheeffortsofindividualswithdiverseabilitiestoachieveindependenceandactivelyparticipateinthecommunity
SLIprovidesresidential,communityintegration/dayservices,casemanagement,andskilldevelopmentprogramsforover200childrenandadultsintheTopekacommunity.AllfundsraisedfromtheFestivalofTreesgotosupportunfundedneedsofourclientssuchasdentalcare,nursing,transportation,medicalsuppliesandmore.
2020VirtualFestivalofTreesForthesafetyandhealthofallofourparticipantsandvolunteers,SLIhasmadethedecisiontonotholdanin-personFestivalofTreesthisyear.Wewanttostillbringthe43-yeartraditiontotheTopekaCommunitysoweareholdingavirtualFestivalofTreesin2020!Thatmeanshoweveryonedoesthingsthisyearwilllookdifferentbutweneedyoumorethanever!Wearelimitingthetypesofentryitemsthisyearfordesignerstomakeiteasierforapurchasertopickupitemsandchangingthetimingofthingstochangetoallowustoproperlyshowoffyourhardworkonline.Weareallowingitemsthatwillfitinthepurchaser’scarsaswearenotdeliveringitemsthisyear.Pleasemakesurethatyouthoroughlyreviewthehandbookthisyeartoseethechangesthatweareaskingofdesigners.Asalways,feelfreetoreachouttouswithanyquestionsandwewillbemorethanhappytohelp.Thanksforunderstandingourneedtochangefor2020andwearelookingforwardtoseeingyouinpersonforabiggerandbetter2021FestivalofTrees!

Weencourageyoutochooseathemewithartisticcreativityandimagination.Significanttothesuccessofthiseventisthebroadappealofthedesignsdisplayed.Ifyourthemeisspecifictoalimitednumberofbuyers,weaskthatyouhaveapurchaserinmind.

DescribingYourEntryYourtitleanddescriptionofyourdesignismoreimportantthaneverthisyear!Thiswillbelistedonlinewithyourentryandwewanttoprovidedbidderswithasmuchdetailaspossible!
AsyoubrainstormideasandbegindecoratingyourtreeorwreathwritedownsomeofyourwhimsicalthoughtsoftheChristmasseasontouseincraftingyourtreedescription.Thiswillhelpwhenyouarereadytosubmityourdesignercontractanddescription.
Bespecificwithcolorsandtheme,listspecialaccessoriessuchaslighting,uniquesizeorshapeandornamentsthatplaymusictoenhanceyourdescription.Only100wordswillbeallowedandtheFestivalofTreeshastherighttochangeifneeded.Belowisanexampleofawell-writtendescription:

UnderstandingProspectiveBuyersOurhopeisthateveryentrywillhaveatleasttwointerestedbiddersandwillbemoresuccessfulwhentherearethreeorfouractivebidders.Festivalbuyersareasdiverseasyourcreations,buttherearesomekeyelementstoconsiderinplanningyourtreeorwreath.
• Individualbuyersarelookingfortrees,wreaths,etc.todecoratetheirownhomesorafamilymember’shome.Theyareoftenlookingformoretraditionaldesignswithholidayelegance.

nonprofitorganization,schoolorhospital.Theirinterestcanvary,buttheywantatreeorwreaththatwillappealtotheorganizationtheyaresupporting.TreescanalsobepurchasedanddonatedbacktoSLItoplaceinoneof21homesthatclientslivein.

• Allgreeneryandtreesmustbeartificial.
• Treescanonlybe4feetorunder.AdisplaytablewillbeprovidedbytheFestivalofTrees.Pleasemakesureallitemsincludedcanfitinacar.
• Metaltreestandandwoodenbasearenotrequiredfortreesofthissize.Pleaseusethetreestandthatcomeswiththetree.
• Alllightsmustbenewandsecurelywiredtothetrees.Stringspoweredbybatteriesareallowed.
• Yourtreewillbepickedupandmovedthreetimesonaverage.Forthatreason,itisessentialthatALLdecorations,lights,etc.arewiredtothetreewithfloristwireorpipecleanerstopreventdamage.Remembertousethesamecolorwireasthecolorofyourtree,i.e.greentree=greenwire,whitetree=whitepipecleaner.
• Ornamenttoppersmustbegluedtogetheraswelltopreventornamentsfromfallingoff.Nogluingofornamentstothetreeisallowed.
• Atreeskirtorotherappropriatecoveringforthebaseofthetreemustbeincludedwiththedesign.
• Thetreesareviewedfromallsides.Allsidesofthetreerequiredecorations.
• Toincreasethepurchasevalueofanitem,theFestivalofTreeshastherighttoadjustanyentryasrequired.
• Brokenorrepairedtreesarenotaccepted.

• Allgreeneryandwreathsmustbeartificial.
• WreathdisplaystandsareprovidedbyFestivalofTrees.
• Pleasemakesureallitemsincludedcanfitinacar.
• Lightsarerequired.Strandsmustbenewandbatterypacklightsarerecommended.
• Yourwreathwillbepickedupandmovedatleastthreetimes.Forthatreason,itis

MantlescapeDesignerRulesandRegulations
• Allgreenerymustbeartificial.
• MantledisplayisprovidedbyFestivalofTrees.
• Pleasemakesureallitemsincludedcanfitinacar.
• Decorationsmustbeattachedtoaboardthatwilllayontopofamantle.Theboard
shouldhaveadepthnomorethan1.5inches,awidthof8.5inchesandnolongerthan58inches.Theboardshouldbecoveredwithfabricorothermaterialtoeliminatescratchingthepurchaser’smantle.
• Thegreenerymustbestapledtotheboardandthedisplayitemsmaybewiredtothesecuredgreenery.Wemustensurethatfallsandgetsbrokenduringthefestivalortransportingtothepurchaser’shome.
• Displayswillbemovedduringtheauction.Secureasmanyitemsaspossibletotheboard.
• Lightsarerequired.Strandsmustbenewandbatterypacklightsarerecommended.
• Toincreasethepurchasevalueofanitem,theFestivalofTreeshastherighttoadjustanyentryasrequired.

DesigningandDecoratingLights
Manytreesandwreathsarepre-litsoyoumaychoosetoaddmorelightstogiveyourtreeorwreathaddedappeal.Ifyouhaveatreeorwreaththatisnotpre-lit,alllightsmustbenewandhaveatleasttwo(2)stringsof100traditionallightsperfootoftree.Uselightsthatareindependentofeachothersothatifonelightburnsout,thereststayon.Donotplugmorethanthreestrandsoflightstogether.IfusingLEDlights,thenumberofstringswillvary.
• Testthelightsbeforeputtingthemonyourentryandagainbeforeaddingdecorations.Lightsshouldremainonwhileattachingthemtobesurenonearelooseorfaulty.
• Morethan5strandsoflights—pleasewireapowerstriptothebaseofyourtree.• Lightsshouldenhancetheentry,notdetractfromthem.Usestrandsoflights
thathavethesamecolorwireasthecolorofyourtreeorwreath.Hidethewiresoitcannotbeseen.
• Coloredlights.Dependingonyourtheme,coloredlightsmayenhanceyourdesign.However,sometimeswhitelightsarethebesttouse.
• Lightsmustbesecurelyfastenedtoyourtreeorwreath.Usethesamecolorwiretiesasthecolorofyourtreeorwreath.Twotwistsaresufficienttosecurethelightsandstillmakeitpossibleforthelightstoberemovedlaterbythebuyer.
FillingEmptySpaces
Avarietyofmaterialscanbeusedtofillemptyspacesandaddshapetoyourentry.Suggestionsinclude:driedfloralfiller,floralandpaperribbonwrapsandbows,raffia,tulle,pinecones,moss,holly,flowers,etc.Useyourimagination!Buymoredecorationsthanyouthinkyou'llneed,thenbuyevenmore!
Bowsandribbongarlandscanbeaneconomicalandappealingfinishingtouch.Somethingstorememberwhenselectingribbonare:
• floristsatinwireribboniseasiertotiethananyotherkindofribbon.Itcomesindozensofshadesandpatterns.
• velvetisbeautifulbutbecauseofthickness,itismoredifficulttotie.Ifyouplantousevelvet,youmightwanttofindsomeonewithexperiencetyingbows.
• ribboncomesinmanywidths.Thewidertheribbon,themoreyardageittakestomakeanicebow.Ittakes2to4yardstomakeabow.
• tiethecenterofyourbowwithapliablewire,usingalongenoughpiecethatyoucanwirethebowdirectlyontothetree.

CommunitySolicitation
Designersareallowedtotoreceivedonationstohelpwiththeirentrybutdesignersarenotallowedtoaskbusinessforamonetarydonation.ThismayinterfereandconflictwithworkthattheSLIDevelopmentDepartmentisdoingbeyondtheFestivalofTrees.Ifyouhaveanyquestionsorneedclarificationonthis,[email protected](785)233-2566.
Ifyouaregivingagiftcertificateorticketstoaperformance,etc.,pleasemakeacopyandplaceitonyourtree.TheoriginalswillbekeptbytheFestivalofTreesEventManager.Allgiftcertificates,giftcards,eventticketsandotheritemsbeingdonatedwiththetreeorwreathMUSTbewiththetreeorwreathatthetimeofcheck-in.Anyitemthatcannotbedeliveredwiththetreeorwreathonsetupdaywillnotbeincludedwiththedonation.
EntryDrop-OffDaysSLIwillhaveonelocationthatwillserveas“homebase”forthisyear’sFestivalofTrees.Thislocationwillbewhereyouwilldropoffyourentryfortheyearandwillstoreituntilpickedupbyapurchaser.Thislocationwillbesharedwithdesignerslaterintheyear.
DropoffdayswillbeFriday,November13,andSaturday,November14.Drop-offswillbebyreservationonlyandlimitedindividualswillbeabletocheckinyourentry.Asitewillbesentoutatalaterdatetoall2020designers.Completedentriesnotreceivedby6:00pmonNovember14willnotbeexcepted.
Whenyouarrivetodropoffyourentry,pleasehaveitmostlyorentirelycompletedwithonlyfinaltoucheslefttodo.Youwillnotbeabletodecorateyourcompleteentryon-siteasinpreviousyearsandwillhavealimitedtimetocompletefinaltouches.Thiswillhelpusavoidlargegatheringsofindividuals.Volunteerswillbeon-sitetohelpwiththeunloadingofyourentry.
Bringyourcompletedcheck-informwithyouandwewillalsobeworkingwithwillingdesignerstoperformoncamerainterviewsandphotosthatwillbeplacedonlinetohelpshowyourentrypotentialpurchasers.Sinceindividualswillnotbeabletoseeyourentryinpersonthisyear,wewanttomakesurewehaveplentyofwaysforthemtoenjoyyourentryonline.
