Religious Education & Upcoming Events

Studies In The Faith Studies in the Faith classes meet on Sundays, following Divine Liturgy. Join us in the journey of our Orthodox faith.

Young Adult Bible Study Young Adult Bible Study meets every Tuesday at 6:00pm. Contact Rondal Burkhard at 233-0397 for more information.

Thursday Morning Bible Study Join us for Morning Bible Study Thursdays at 9:30am in Room 7. We look forward to studying God’s word to-gether. You are not what you do, although you do a lot. You are not what you have collected in terms of friendships and connections, although you might have many. You are not the popularity that you have received. You are not the success of your work. You are not what people say about you, whether they speak well or whether they speak poorly about you. All these things that keep you quite busy, quite occupied, and often quite preoccupied are not telling the truth about who you are. I am here to remind you in the name of God that you are the Beloved Daughters and Sons of God, and that God says to you, “I have called you from all eternity and you are engraved from all eternity in the palms of my hands. You are mine. You be-long to me, and I love you with an everlasting love.” - Henri Nouwen

Athena Philoptochos Society

We are grateful to our co-chairs, Cindi Boukidis and Irma Hill, for preparing the kitchen and gathering a crew of women to boil and dye all of the Pascha eggs for the Anastasi Service and the Good Friday Retreat. Our ongoing thanks goes out to Jon Natsues, who donated the eggs again this year in memory of his mom, and Dee Stonebreaker who do-nated the eggs for the Good Friday Retreat. The eggs were made even more beautiful with the decorated bags which were all done by Evelyn Boosalis. Christos Anesti! Our incredible crew of young women, including Evangelia Pappas, Semhar Gebregziabiher, Sophia Nas-sar, Alexi Archon, Maria Burkhard, Kiki Michailides, & Sophia Michailides planned and prepared our Mother's

Day Tea to honor all mothers. Our delicious breakfast casserole and mimosas were a treat enjoyed by all! Special Congratulations to our honored Mother of the Year, Elaine Kourafas! Elaine has served St. George and Philoptochos in many capacities and for many years. Her stewardship and stamina is a shining example to us all! Her out-of-town family surprised her by sitting in the back pews in church. AXIA!

May 20th we completed the 5th year of our Angel Babies project. With over 50 people joining us, we celebrated over a delicious dinner prepared for us by George Piperis, Jim Boukidis, Ernie Sopp, and a few more helpers. Elaine and Kopi Sotiropulos hosted the dinner in honor of the Feast Day of Saints Constantine and Helen on May 21st. We have accepted over 500 donated bridal gowns and have donated more than 1300 Angel Gowns over the past 5 years.

Our APS Members of the Year are Dorothea Gianopulos and Evelyn T. Boosalis. Both of these women are gracious, hard-working women who serve our chapter, our church, and our community beyond. We are so grateful to both of them for their years of service. Our Members of the Year are honored at our June Members Luncheon.

With Greek Fest prep upon us, we encourage everyone to find time in the calendars to help when they can. Angel Babies and our regular meetings will resume in September.

More Philoptochos news on the next page.

Mother of the Year

The St. George Greek Orthodox Church Mother of the Year is a long-standing ser-vant of our community—Elaine Kourafas. Elaine was born and raised in San Francisco, to James and Julia Pappas. Elaine is one of five children, with two brothers and two sisters. She grew up active in the Greek community in San Francisco until her marriage in 1948 to Nick Tom Kourafas, son of St. George founders Tom and Christine Kourafas of Fresno, California. Nick and Elaine were married for more than 59 years until his passing in 2008, and together they had four children—James, George, Christopher, and Joanne. Their family has thus far grown to include daughters-in-law Regina, Jan, and Trish Kourafas, son-in-law Bill Weaver, 10 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Through it all, church and family have been an omnipresent theme of Elaine’s life. Elaine’s 50+ years of service have been humble, never seeking accolades for her charity or the spotlight of praise. Elaine’s dedication to the community has been decades in the making and cannot be fully detailed. But, in short, she has served in virtually every aspect possible, mostly devoting herself to the kitchen and to food preparation. Her involvement in this area garnered her a Georgie award in 1995. She has served as Food Festival Chairman, Co-Chair and food preparation Chairman too many years to count. Her high standards in church recipes and proper preparation are legendary, and many consider her time spent cooking and preparing the food to be some of the best and brightest moments of our church’s history. Elaine also sought to help the community in other ways being instrumental in advocating for numerous church building and ground improvements. Her service continues to this day assisting Father Jim with parishioner visitations and participating in various Philoptochos projects. Elaine has been a member of the Athena Chapter of Philoptochos for more than 35 years, and has served a term as President and several years as Membership Chairman. Most importantly, Elaine is truly a loyal and dedi-

cated mother to her children, grandchildren, great

grandchildren, and extended family members, and

will do anything for them. She can always be

counted on to help when asked or needed. Family

is, and always has been, her top priority in life.

Elaine is the consummate matriarch of her fam-

ily—the tie that binds her family together. For all

of these reasons, she is the St. George Greek Or-

thodox Church Mother of the Year, but to her

family, she is the mother of the year every year!

Have you considered joining Philoptochos?

Please accept our invitation to join! We love working together and having fun together for

the good of our parish and community.

St. George Bookstore

Now available in the St. George Bookstore: Ancient Faith has produced a fresh update and redesign of a book cherished by a generation of seekers. Written in an accessible manner for the average lay person, Orthodox Worship offers insights into the Orthodox liturgy. Early Christians preserved a continuity of worship from the Old Covenant to the New, employing elements from the Jewish Temple liturgy, the synagogue liturgy, and the rituals of the Jewish home. The book shows how divinely revealed Old Testa-ment worship is not only continued but also fulfilled in the Orthodox liturgy. A line-by-line explanation of the liturgy is included.

This past year we developed Vision 100, part of our Strategic Plan. In the coming year we are implementing this

plan to grow our church and its ministries. Copies of Vision 100 are available in the Narthex or on our website at:

http://stgeorgefresno.org/st.-george-strategic-plan.

We invite you to be part of this vision by becoming a Financial Steward of St. George Church. By becoming a Fi-

nancial Steward of St. George Church, you will insure the success of the many current and future ministries we

provide.

Please fill out this form and return it to the church office or place in the offering tray on Sunday. Please fill out this form and return it to the church office or place in the offering tray on Sunday. Did you know that out of the 400+ families that our church ministers to, only 220 families are stewards? Of those 220 families, 78 families give less than $500 per year. If each of these 220 families gave at least $2,075 per year, we would be able to fulfill the financial obligations of our church. This would free up income from fundraisers, like the Food Festival, to use on property improvements and future growth. We ask

that if you have the means, please consider giving at least $2,075 per year in stewardship. If you already give at least $2,075 per year, we ask that you consider increasing your stewardship by 10% for 2019.

No matter what you are financially able to give, you are a valued member of St. George Church.
