Speech and Drama Workshops – Richard Coles Hall

On Saturday 19th May between 2:30pm and 4:30pm the Speech & Drama section of the Northampton Eisteddfod will be

offering a series of workshops for entrants aged 8 years and above which will be hosted by Northamptonshire Music

and Performing Arts (NMPAT) County Youth at the NMPAT Centre (NN1 4AZ). There are three workshops with limited

places (as detailed below) which were offered to Speech & Drama entrants on a first come basis – please contact

[email protected] to check current availability:

Trestle Theatre Company Mask Workshop - Trestle’s popular mask workshops have introduced thousands of students

and performers throughout the world to the exciting versatility of mask. Explore how mask training can unlock the door

to a more focused physicality in all performance. This workshop provides an in-depth introduction to Trestle’s mask

technique. Participants will understand the principles of effective mask performance through physicality and core

techniques. More information about Trestle Theatre and their work can be found at their website

‘Creating a Character’ with Tristan Pate - This workshop aims to give participants several different practical techniques

and starting points for creating characters. With 7 years’ experience as an actor, director and facilitator, Tristan uses

Laban Technique to define and explore different forms of movement, as well as exploring Le Coq style approaches to

mask and clown physicality, enabling young people to develop rounded characters from scratch with defined physical

and vocal mannerisms. Participants will gain an understanding of practical approaches to characterisation which they

could go on to apply to scripted work, or develop their own stories and plays based on the characters which emerge.

Frantic Assembly Physical Theatre Workshop (14+) - Frantic Assembly are globally renowned physical theatre company

who are currently touring their production Things I Know To Be True and in this workshop will be sharing production

specific exercises from shows like Lovesong, Stockholm, Beautiful Burnout and Othello and instructing students on the

various devising processes they use when working collaboratively to produce multi-disciplined performance, which will

transfer perfectly to their own productions.
