PUBLISHING AWARDS

In partnership with our authors, we have an incredibly important role to play in ensuring the quality of education in Australia. I hope you will agree that, step by step, the Australian Publishers Association (APA) is helping to increase the recognition of our value amongst the educational community, and that you support our ongoing efforts to raise the profile of educational publishing.

The EPAAs is one way we are doing this (while also giving you the opportunity to celebrate your successes), and our work on copyright is another.

The inaugural Educational Publishing Awards Australia (EPAAs) were in 1994, led by Professor Mike Horsley to whom we pay tribute this year, our 25th anniversary. Horsley’s vision was to promote and celebrate research, innovation and excellence in Australian educational publishing. He believed that Australian learning resources are a critical feature of the education landscape and a key influencer of student learning outcomes, and that the Awards have developed a benchmark of standards for the industry.

This year, the judging panel for the EPAAs was again very ably led by Chief Judge Angela Carbone, Associate Dean, Learning Innovation, at Swinburne University. Thank you, Angela, for your expertise and guidance. The Australian Publishers Association (APA) is the leading national body responsible for representing the Australian publishing industry and for promoting the importance of the published word to the educational, social, cultural and intellectual life of Australia.

An advocate, collaborator, advisor and educator, the APA acts on behalf of publishing businesses: big and small, commercial and non-profit, popular and academic, large multinational and local independent.

The APA is governed by a board of directors and six sectional committees that cover the different sectors of the industry:

The APA has a responsibility to promote a better understanding of the publishing industry and the interests of our members within the wider community and especially in the context of policy formulation.

As part of our advocacy work, which seeks to improve the regulatory environment our members work in, we:

• continually nurture high-level relationships with members of both state and federal governments and other relevant non-government bodies;

• prepare researched submissions for public consultations; and• attend critical stakeholder meetings and appear before inquiries

on a regular basis.

Our policy agenda includes accessibility, the arts, education, copyright and intellectual property, censorship and publishing freedoms, the digital economy and trade, and competition and taxation.

MEET THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Shelley Ware is well known for her role as presenter on popular NITV-SBS show, Marngrook, and she’s a teacher with more than 20 years of ongoing experience.

A proud Yankunyjatjara and Wirangu woman from Adelaide, South Australia, Ms Ware coordinated a literacy program at Kew Primary School in Melbourne for four years, and has authored Teaching Notes for the Sunshine Classics digital and print literacy program. The publication provides explicit teaching plans for small group teaching and focus on comprehension, vocabulary, fluency and writing. She hopes that these teaching notes will provide a time-saving guide so that teachers can pick up a book and start teaching immediately.

Shelley is an ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation and knows first-hand the critical role quality learning resources play for the literacy of students across the nation.

Shelley is a regular keynote presenter espousing her personal journey, perspective on females in sport, Aboriginal issues, and also childhood education.
