2018 Carroll Jazz Auditions Thursday May 24 th , 2018 - CSHS Black Box Theatre Welcome to the Carroll Jazz Program! The audition this year is on Thursday May 24 th in the CSHS Black Box. Audition signup is online at https://bit.ly/2r36rqm. If you have difficulty entering your info on the form using a mobile device, try it again from a PC or laptop. Below is a list of some important items related to the audition. Please read it all very carefully! General Information Be sure that you are signed up for the jazz class for next year. Through Arena Scheduling, you should have placed yourself in a jazz class as a placeholder. Unlike many high schools, we’re fortunate to have credited class periods for all three of our jazz bands, but this means that you must have space in your schedule for the jazz class to participate. Please be aware that with the exception of bassists, pianists and guitarists, students must also be enrolled in a Concert Band class to participate in the jazz program. For the 2018-2019 school year, Jazz Orchestra (1) will meet 7th block on B Days, Jazz Ensemble (2) will meet 8th block on B Days, and Jazz Band (3) will meet 4th block on A Days. All jazz classes take place in the Jazz Room at Carroll Senior High School. Saxophonists: Based on the needs of specific bands, saxophonists may be asked to switch to or from alto, bari or tenor for next year. The skill demonstrated by saxophonists in the audition is far more important than the specific saxophone they choose to play on their audition. Please arrive at the audition at least 30 minutes before your scheduled audition time. This will allow you appropriate time to warm up and will ensure a smooth audition process if we happen to be running early. The typical instrumentation in a jazz big band is five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, one guitar, one piano, one bass and one drumset. Although I will consider doubling some parts if the numbers make it necessary, I will try hard to hold to this basic instrumentation. It will ensure that the music sounds right and that there are not extra students with nothing to do during class. Some students who audition might not be placed in a band this year. This is due to the limited instrumentation in jazz ensemble writing and the high musical demands of jazz improvisation. Students not making a band are strongly encouraged to try again next year. This is not a blind audition. It will be adjudicated by Mr. Lown and two other professional jazz educators. We are committed to placing students in bands according to the knowledge and skill they demonstrate in the audition. The audition will be held at Carroll Senior High School, 1501 W. Southlake Blvd. Students are encouraged to enter the building through the front entrance, facing Southlake Blvd., and follow the hallway around to the right until they reach the Fine Arts wing. There they can unpack their instruments and warm up in the Jazz Room. Student assistants will be on hand to show Middle Schoolers to the Black Box.

Welcome to the Carroll Jazz Program! The audition this year is on Thursday May 24th in the CSHS Black Box. Audition signup is online at https://bit.ly/2r36rqm. If you have difficulty entering your info on the form using a mobile device, try it again from a PC or laptop. Below is a list of some important items related to the audition. Please read it all very carefully!

General Information

Be sure that you are signed up for the jazz class for next year.

We will provide the following instruments and equipment: Drumset, Piano, Bass Amp, Guitar Amp, patch cables, music stands. Guitarists and Bassists will only need to bring their instruments and music.

We will do our best to post audition results within a week of the audition. An announcement will be made via email and Twitter that the results are ready, and they will be available for download from the secure section of the CarrollDragonBand.org website.

Audition Requirements

1. Prepared EtudePrepared etudes for each instrument can be found in this PDF by scrolling down. With the exception of Bass Trombone and Drums, all etudes are written transcriptions of quality jazz improvisations performed on released jazz albums by top jazz musicians. The Artist and Album information is listed at the top of each etude. It is highly recommended that students use these recordings as a reference in their preparation.

2. SightreadingStudents will be given 30 seconds to review an unknown piece of music during the audition, and then they will have one chance to perform it.

3. Optional Improvisation PerformanceStudents will have an opportunity to demonstrate additional work they have been doing on jazz improvisation. If a student opts in, they should improvise two (2) unaccompanied choruses on the tune “Now’s the Time” by Charlie Parker.

Thank you for reading this information! Please email me if you have questions, and be sure to follow @carrolljazz on Twitter for current news, photos and videos.
