2018 APST Teacher Education: Secondary 24361 In 2015 and 2016, Western Sydney University’s School of Education provided 20 Australian pre-service teachers with a 3-week practicum at the Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST). The collaboration brings together Australian and Taiwanese university students through the context of teaching middle school students during an English- immersion summer camp. Each Australian student is partnered with a ‘teaching assistant’ (i.e. a STUST student majoring in Applied English) to teach small groups of middle school students from Tainan City. The practicum increases students’ experience in lesson planning and classroom teaching, and includes field trip visits to cultural and historic sites in the Tainan region. The program is co-coordinated by the Taiwan Ministry of Education to enhance the bilingualism and internationalisation of STUST and Tainan city. Through this successful reciprocal partnership, Australian students gain valuable cross-cultural experience, enhancing their employability through deepening their knowledge of the Indo-Pacific region. The cultural program includes Chinese language instruction, calligraphy, tea making, and Zen meditation. The program will expand to include an optional internship in local primary schools, where Australian education students can further develop their intercultural competencies and Asia literacy, towards achieving professional standards and broadening their perspectives as future teachers.
