HISTORIC CEDAR BRIDGE TAVERNDating back to the 1700s the Cedar Bridge Tavern in Barnegat Township served travelers and hunters. This historic treasure has been called a unique window into the European experience in the New Jersey Pinelands.

Listed on the New Jersey and National registers of historic places, Ocean County is now beginning detailed and historically appropriate restoration work on the structure.

“Preserving our history is imperative to our future,” said Ocean County Freeholder John C. Bartlett Jr., who serves as liaison to the county’s Department of Parks and Recreation and Cultural and Heritage Commission. “When we let buildings like this deteriorate, we allow our past to be lost. Ocean County is rich in history and this project is important to preserving a piece of it. It’s important to leave a legacy to future generations.”

The historic tavern sits at an important 18th century crossroads of the east west Old Springfield Road from Springfield in Burlington County to Manahawkin in then Monmouth County. The road to Egg Harbor (later Little Egg Harbor – Tuckerton) is only a few hundred yards west of the tavern. By 1740, a saw mill and small village was founded by Europeans at Cedar Bridge.

“It was on the original stagecoach route from the west to the shore,” Bartlett said. “In the 1920s to ’30s when the state built Route 72, they bypassed the site.”

Ocean County purchased the tavern on Dec. 27, 2007 from the owner Rudolf Koenig for $120,000. Mr. Koenig was granted a life estate to live in the tavern building until his death on Jan. 12, 2012. Mr. Koenig owned the property from 1960 until selling to the County.

“Mr. Koenig is credited with saving the historic integrity of the structure,” Bartlett said. “Neglect and forest fires have claimed most historic structures in the Pinelands.”

Ocean County has received three grants to fund and restore the tavern through the N.J. Historic Trust. The NJHT most recently awarded one of only 25 N.J. Corporate Business Tax grants of $150,000 towards the project. In 2013, Ocean County was granted a $125,426 grant for repairs from the Sandy Disaster Relief Grant for historic structures. In 2010, the county received $49,500 towards creating a historic preservation plan and nomination to the New Jersey and National registers of historic places.

Annabelle Radcliffe-Trenner, principal of Historic Buildings Architects, LLC of Trenton has conducted a comprehensive preservation plan for the site, designed the plans, managed the prequalification of contractors and will oversee the detailed and historically appropriate restoration work. Work is anticipated to take about a year to complete and the project is scheduled to be dedicated some time in 2018.

Freeholder Bartlett said the completed tavern and property will be one of the most accurate and authentic restorations in New Jersey of this type of structure.

Each year, more than 350 students tour the site and historic tavern.

“Once the work is done, we believe those numbers will increase and even more Ocean County students will join the public in appreciating this marvelous example of historic preservation right here in our own back yards,” Bartlett said.

On Dec. 17, 2017 the Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation plans to hold the 15th annual ceremony commemorating the Dec. 27, 1782 skirmish at the bridge on Cedar Creek. This is arguably the last documented land engagement of the American Revolution. Historians have speculated that the skirmish may have occurred near the site of the current tavern.

The Ocean County Department of Parks and Recreation is participating in the restoration having already removed materials from the site as part of a cleanup in order to start the work.

“It’s a privilege to preserve Cedar Bridge Tavern as part of our County’s park system offering the public a historical and cultural experience,” Bartlett said.

Postcards of Ocean County’s PastMany of us rarely think about sending a postcard while on vacation to family in today’s times of constant contact through text messages and emails. Yet for many local historians such as Kevin Pace, postcards have become a way to document a town’s history through its imagery of buildings, bridges, dignitaries and celebrations. Kevin will share his collection of postcards that depict landmarks in several small towns of early Ocean County. You will revel in the beauty and history found within these Ocean County postcards and also learn how the written message on the back can transcend generations and create a greater understanding of the sentiments of that particular era.

The NaturalLands Trust

Fund Program

In 1997, the residents of Ocean County overwhelmingly voted to establish the Ocean County Natural Lands Trust Program. The approval of a 1.2 cent dedicated tax provides the Board of Chosen Freeholders with the funds to acquire lands in Ocean County for conservation and farmland preservation. Lands that fall under this program are environmentally sensitive, natural areas or open spaces that would protect farmland, water quality, wetlands and other lands with unique or sensitive features.

The Natural Lands Trust Fund encourages the establishment of a system of protected lands which, in combination with the Farmlands Preservation Program, enhances the quality of life in Ocean County by:

Helping to maintain the County’s rural characteristicsProtecting critical environmental resourcesMaintaining and enhancing active agricultureBuffering areas that are not compatible with development

On February 18, 1998 the Ocean County Board of Chosen Freeholders es-tablished a nine-member Natural Lands Trust Fund Advisory Committee. The committee’s purpose is to review nominations for the Trust Fund and to forward recommendations to the Board of Chosen Freeholders for consideration.

The program now generates over $8 million per year for natural lands acquisi-tions and farmland preservation. Several important parcels have been preserved and acquired through partnerships with non-pro ts, municipalities and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
