2017Water Conservation

A WATER CONSERVATION EDUCATION PROJECT

CARWASH CAR CAREDo not wash your vehicles on the street or in your driveway. Take your cars to the carwash or wash on your lawn.

HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS HINTSDispose of any household hazardous waste at Public Works or at landfi lls (go to sandy.utah.gov for locations and event dates). Evaporate rinsewater from painting supplies.

PET POO VOODOO Pick up your pet’s waste every time! Grab it, bag it, dispose of it!

RECYCLE RIGHTRecycle antifreeze, motor oil and other fl uids at an approved drop-off facility.

LITTER LOWDOWNIf you see litter by storm drains, clean it up and trash it.

GET IN THE GREEN GROOVEGreen waste is all biodegradable such as lawn clippings, hedge trimmings or general yard debris. It belongs in the BLUE CAN (or BLACK CAN for those who receive service through Salt Lake County), never in the gutter, storm drain or street.

ABSORBENT AIDSFor spills or leaks, use absorbent materials for clean up and dispose of properly.

SPARINGLY SPRAYLimit spray areas and amount when using pesticides and herbicides.

NOZZLE NECESSITYPrevent water run-off when not in use by simply using a nozzle on garden hoses. Sweep your patio and driveway instead of hosing them off.

SPRINKLER SET UPMake sure all yard sprinkler heads are adjusted to spray vegetation only to avoid all paved surfaces.

DIRECT THE DOWN SPOUT Make sure your raingutter downspouts are directed away from paved surfaces.

STOCKPILE SUPERVISIONFor yard landscape stockpiles that must be stored short-term on the sidewalk or street, be sure to cover and completely contain with sediment controls (like tarps).

USU Auditors will come to your home and check your sprinklers for uniform

distribution and point out any adjustments that need to be made to

have a more efficient system.

The garden serves as an outdoor classroom to educate visitors on water wise irrigation and plant choices for their landscapes at home. The garden staff is available for tours, individual classes on irrigation, plant choices and maintenance of your landscape. We welcome service projects so please contact us if you have an interested group. Interpretive signs have been placed throughout the garden to provide information for a self-guided tour of the gardens.

The first annual "Art In The Garden, Sego Lily Plein Air Quick Draw" was held June 25, 2016 at the Sego Lily Gardens. Artists had 3 hours to produce their art "en Plein Air" using the beauty of the Gardens as their subject matter. They then framed their art and submitted it to be judged. Gary Bloomquist took first place with "Sego Lily Saturday". The Sego Lily Quick Draw is sponsored by the Sandy Visual Art Committee, the Sandy Arts Guild, Sandy Public Utilities and Sego Lily Gardens. The Sego Lily Quick Draw 2017 is scheduled for June 10th.

TIP: In order to avoid frozen and broken sprinkler lines, winterize your irrigation system by shutting it down at the “stop and waste valve” to release pres-sure in the pipes and to ensure it is fully drained.

TIP: Water evergreens and small trees and shrubs if the fall weather is especially dry. Their foliage and stems need to be nice and plump to prevent damage from drying winds now through early spring.
