2017 Required Summer Reading Program for Elementary School WCA students entering grades one through five are required to complete summer reading and reports. The goal of summer reading is to encourage growth in reading by engaging the mind with good books over the summer break. Please choose books from the attached list assigned to the grade level the student will be entering in the fall. Then complete the assigned Book Report(s) which will be turned in to your teacher for a grade. The mandatory reading must be completed and the book reports must be turned in to your teacher by Friday, August 25, 2017 . All book reports must be turned in at the same time. Not every book is recommended for every child. It is the parent’s responsibility to review the book for suitability of content for the student as well as to gauge the book’s reading level. If the student has read one of the books before, he/she must select a new book to read this summer. Where Eagles Soar Honors Reading This year again, we will continue a “gold standard” for summer reading in which we encourage all students to participate; however, participation in this part of the reading program is strictly voluntary. Requirement for Where Eagles Soar Honors Reading: the student must complete all of the grade level summer reading requirements as listed above, plus read two or more additional books from the grade level list. Students will submit a book report for each additional book read from the list (must be a book not previously read by the student). Students completing the honors reading requirement will receive extra credit determined by the classroom teacher and an awards certificate of completion. The due date for the honors reading is also August 25, 2017 .

for Elementary School

complete two book reports on their favorite books. Please use the attached instructions and

worksheet for the book reports.

Book Report for Students Entering 1st and 2

rd Grade

Please complete your book report(s) on the activity sheet on the next page. For

each box on the activity sheet, write your responses in complete sentences. You

may also include pictures and/or color/decorate each activity sheet.

Genre: Fiction (Realistic Fiction, Fantasy, Historical Fiction, etc.)

Characters: Write a sentence listing the characters in your book.

Setting: Write a sentence describing where and when the story took place.

Summary: Write a brief summary of your book, including beginning, middle, and

ending.

Problem: Write a sentence describing the problem in your book.

Solution: Write a sentence describing the solution for the problem in your book.
