Dokmai Rwanda—a private limited company located in Kigali—was

founded in December 2014 by Bernadette Umunyana together with her

family. Dokmai Rwanda is a newcomer in Rwanda as the company has its

roots in Laos.

For 8 years Dokmai has produced Fair Trade handmade goods,

specializing in hand-woven and naturally dyed silk products following

both traditional styles and en vogue fashion.

In 2014, Bernadette Umunyana left Southeast Asia and decided to

start a new business aimed at exposing the international community to

the beauty of Rwanda’s exquisite handmade products. After surveying

the local handicraft market and potential opportunities, Bernadette

discovered that the leather fashion sector had the potential to attract local

and international customers. Today, Dokmai Rwanda is pushing forward

a “Made in Rwanda“ aesthetic by working with local artisans using local

raw materials.

Our products are handmade with passion in Rwanda by skilled leather

craftspeople, both women and men. Our goal is to provide you with a one-

of-a-kind product that is made to last.

In our shop we carry an extensive line of purses, handbags and wallets.

We also offer a fully custom design process and can take your idea from

sketch to reality.

The pictures in this lookbook indicate a general range of materials and

design options. Due to the constantly changing nature of the local textile

market, some patterns may not be available. Exact fabrics and patterns

are always chosen with the client upon ordering.

The main raw material is genuine leather in various colors following

international fashion trends. The leather is paired with printed cotton fabric

refl ecting the Rwandan joy of life. The products are high quality, long-
