Thank you to our Legacy Fund founding membersThe Lawrence Arts Center Legacy Fund, held at the Douglas County Community Foundation, will underwrite visual and performing arts programming for children at the Lawrence Arts Center. Established in 2014 with a $100,000 gift from the Ethel and Raymond Rice Foundation and a $100,000 gift from the Marianna and Ross Beach Foundation, the Fund will support financial aid and arts programming at the Arts Center for children in Head Start, CASA, Boys and Girls Club and other social service agencies served by

the Arts Center’s ArtsReach program. This fund may also be used to underwrite costs for children’s programming directly related to training and retaining teaching artists for preschool through high school visual and performing arts classes.

Dear Friends,

The creation of our Summer Course and Events catalog is such a deep winter pleasure at the Lawrence Arts Center. We begin planning while “A Kansas Nutcracker” is on stage, continue as a new year begins, and anticipate what will capture your imagination when our catalog arrives in your mailboxes around spring break. In these pages, you will see what we have in store!

More than ever, the Lawrence Arts Center is a hub for scholarship, art, education, and social service, and we celebrate these facets of our work in Performance, Exhibitions, and Visual and Performing Arts Education. In the past year, we’ve congratulated Arts-based Preschool Director Linda Reimond on winning the Henry Ford Innovative Teacher of the Year Award and Margaret Weisbrod Morris on her election to the National Arts Education Advisory Board of Americans for the Arts. With David Cateforis, Ben Ahlvers curated an acclaimed Albert Bloch retrospective and an award-winning catalog. Ric Averill directed his opera “Grotesque Arabesque: A Midnight Visit to the Grave of Poe,” a tremendous suc-cess. Our entire team continues to win acclaim for their passionate and excellent work in Performance, Exhibitions, and Arts Education.

Your support makes it possible for us to take risks, to support artists, and to invite all children and families to engage with artists and art in all mediums. We need you!

This Summer Catalog is full of fun and surprises and ways to be part of the action. Check out our website if you haven’t recently. You will find our annual report, news, calendars, blogs, staff introductions, how to enroll, donate, and more.

I would love to see you at the Arts Center!

PS. We are also introducing the all new, Lawrence Arts Center Kelly Galloway Kindergarten, one section opening Fall 2016. A dream come true– with appreciation to the Thomas D. Galloway Family.

HANG12 is a youth curatorial board made up of high school students who curate, produce, and install monthly gallery shows for Final Friday exhibitions. HANG12 aims to create shows that highlight viewpoints and ideas important to society within Lawrence. Each month members work with a local artist or organization to collaborate on the final product, gaining skills from professionals on the process of constructing and maintaining a gallery show. HANG12 meets on the first and third Tuesdays of the month from

3:30-6:00 pm at the Lawrence Arts Center. Every two months, they establish a show theme, create a call for submissions, move through the curatorial process, generate publicity, and solve the logistics of installing the show. HANG12 members work together to install the show in a local gallery space during the week of their Final Friday show opening. If you are seeking a venue to express yourself, a way to connect to other artists, or real life experience in the art world, then please join HANG12. Contact [email protected].

April 29 – June 4Reception April 29, 5-9pm

INSIGHT ArtTalk May 11, 7pm The theme of the four elements is used to unify the work of four artists who ex-plore the topic of the environment, and our human relationship to the natural world. Each artist’s work represents one of the four elements, using a different medium. This artwork strives to invoke thought, conversation, and action related to environmental topics.

INSIGHT ArtTalk May 30, 7pm Current events, historical disasters, idealized landscapes, and a sly sense of humor can all be found in Maggy Rozycki Hiltner’s Vantage Point. The 278 square-foot hand-stitched installation was created for Mesa Contemporary Arts Museum’s Dr. Ruth Tan Lim Project Room, and incorporates Hiltner’s cast of Dick and Jane-style characters as well as found and artist-created imagery.

Brian HorschNew Work

August 26 - September 24Reception August 26, 5-9pm

INSIGHT ArtTalk September 12, 7pm Brian J. Horsch has been creating hand built and thrown ceramic sculpture since 2008. He tends to focus on human and animal forms both real and unreal. He has a special affinity for farmers, ranch-ers, and indigenous Midwest critters.

Many of his pieces are functional with human or animal accents. Prior to his interest in clay, he was carving sculpture from various hardwoods. His ceramic pieces are variously fired by electric, gas, or wood at temperatures between 1900 and 2400 degrees. He lives close to nature near Stull, Kansas.

Amanda Maciuba | Impermanent LinesMay 27 - June 18

Reception May 27, 5-9pm INSIGHT ArtTalk June 8, 7:30pm

This exhibit is concerned with how purposeful human actions, alongside uncontrollable factors of time and nature, alter both the current landscape and human agency within that landscape. Impermanent Lines is inspired by the landscapes, communities, development practices and environmental concerns prevalent throughout the Midwest, specifically those of Northeast Kansas. Amanda Maciuba graduated from the University at Buffalo in 2009 with a degree in Visual Studies and a concentration in Print Media. She completed an MFA in Printmaking from the University of Iowa in 2015.

Reception June 24, 5-9pm INSIGHT ArtTalk July 11, 7pm

Kneel down and peek around within this exhibition. Subtle differences in color reveal shifts in materials and a cacophony of textures. Stand on tiptoes to see what’s on top. Hyper-awareness emerges as the delicately balanced terrain is navigated. Tiny details are alluring. Maybe you’ll return for another look. Christy earned an MFA from the University of Cincinnati. She has participated in residencies at the Pottery Workshop in Jingdezhen, China and the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada.

We rely on the support of businesses and individuals to make sure we can continue to be a resource for all in our community — scholar-ships, workshops, artists’ residencies, exhibitions, and performances are just a few of the ways your support can make a difference. Member-ships of $250 and up can be paid in monthly installments. Contact Heather Hoy, [email protected], for more information and join us!
