Abstract:

Speech Title: Modeling and Stability Analysis on the Dynamical Model of Hand Foot

Mouse Disease

The objectives of this research were to investigate the effects of personal hygiene

campaign and the quarantine rate of infected human and to analysis the mathematical

model of Hand, Foot, Mouth Disease. The standard method is used to analyze the model. To

find the equilibrium points, the stability of each equilibrium points and to find the

numerical solutions to support the analytic solutions.

The results shown that the model is proposed by a system of five nonlinear

ordinary differential equations. This model had two equilibrium points: the disease free

equilibrium point and the disease endemic equilibrium point. The stability analysis of each

equilibriums revealed that the disease free equilibrium is local asymptotically stable when

the basic reproductive number ( 0R ) is less than one and the disease endemic equilibrium

is local asymptotically stable if the basic reproductive number is greater than one. The

value of basic reproductive number 0R 0.0242328< 1 if the effectiveness of personal

hygiene campaign (c) = 0.001. This means that the disease does not occur in the

community. The value of basic reproductive number 0R 27.21164>1 if the effectiveness

of personal hygiene campaign (c) = 0.002. This means that the disease will occur in the

community.

Abstract: The issue of abandoned construction projects is something common that has been widely discussed globally, including Malaysia. This issue has brought a lot of loss to the construction industry and to the economy of the country as well. Identifying factors contributing towards the restoration of the abandoned projects are important to have a successful completed project. This paper is subjected to a study conducted in the purpose of identifying those factors and analyzing it further on to know the significance of it in abandoned project restoration. The study focuses on residential projects and a survey was conducted by distributing questionnaires to targeted groups, and 244 completed questionnaires were collected at the end of the survey. The collected questionnaires was tested on its’ reliability and the factor analysis was also conducted using the SPSS software. The data from it was further on used to construct the latent and measured variables, and lastly a model with good fit index was established using the SEM-AMOS package. By using the stat tools analysis, the developed model is found to be valid, reliable and credible, and also generalizable. This model is hoped to be useful in contributing towards the restoration of the abandoned projects in Malaysia.

The focus of this study is placed on interface shear strength of fine soil and soil with different percentage of bentonite. Bentonite is currently placed for use as buffer and backfill materials in landfill because these materials create an impermeable zone where it reduced the potential of soil contamination from leachate. In this study, direct shear box with dimension of 60 mm x 60 mm was used to determine the interface shear strength of soil with different percentage of bentonite at optimum moisture content. Normal stresses used were between 100 kPa to 300 kPa to represent the depth of 20 m metres of solid waste. Results showed that the most suitable percentage of bentonite was 5% due to the highest interface shear strength of the mixture with non-woven geosynthetic. Moreover, even the presence of bentonite in the sample is proved to give higher interface shear strength to the tested soil, additional bentonite tends to decreased it shear strength.

Abstract: This paper reports the bonding performance of CCA treated glued laminated timber (glulam) made from two Malaysian tropical timber species namely Bintangor (Calophyllum sp) from strength grouping (SG) 5 and Sesenduk (Endospermum sp.) from SG 7 . All the glulam beams were exposed to three different service conditions namely room condition, covered condition and uncovered condition for six month period prior to the test. The bonding properties of the beams were obtained by block shear test and delamination test accordance to Malaysian Standard MS758. Results showed that the delamination for untreated glulam were higher than the delamination of treated glulam. The wood failure percentage for all glulam in all exposure conditions were higher than the acceptance criteria for good glue line performance as stated in MS758. This indicates that the glulam untreated and treated with CCA have good bonding performance.

Abstract: Practically, Industrialized Building System (IBS) in Construction Industry has positives outcomes in improving the performance of overall construction work. Through the effort of Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), promoting the use of Industrialized Building System (IBS) in Malaysian Construction Industry since 1998, it has proven that IBS gives positives effect on that. The Government had indicated earlier that any construction which adopts 70% or more components of the Industrialized Building System (IBS) can be considered as one that has applied the approach of Industrialized Building System (IBS). Nonetheless, the used of IBS for construction projects is still limited compared to what CIDB had been targeting before. Early survey in 2003 reported in IBS Roadmap 2003-2010 (2003) and IBS Survey (2003) indicate that only 15% of overall construction projects in Malaysia used IBS. However, the recent study in 2006 published in IBS Roadmap Review showed that the percentages of completed projects using more than 70% of IBS components in the construction project are in the range of 10%. Thus, this paper aim to measure the level of IBS demand of the Industrialized Building System (IBS) in the construction of government projects. The methodologies adopted for this research are the collection of data from Coordination of Implementation Unit (ICU) and CIDB and survey of the factors that influenced the decision to use IBS. The survey done showed that the important factor that influenced the decisions to use IBS in government projects were reduction in construction time, cost and lack of knowledge regarding IBS system. As the conclusion, the level of IBS system demand in government projects was still low.

Abstract: Industrialized Building System (IBS) can be defined as one of the construction method that can upgrade the quality and productivity of the construction by used better machineries, equipment, materials, and extensive project planning. IBS can be classified into many types, depending on each country. There are five IBS types that commonly used in Malaysia for structural elements such as wall, roof truss, beam, column, and slab which are precast concrete system, reusable formwork system, steel framing systems, prefabricated timber framing systems, and block work systems. IBS was first implemented in Malaysia in early 1960’s when Ministry of Housing and Local Government of Malaysia visited several European countries and evaluate their housing development program. The challenges of the implementation of IBS in Malaysia are not only faces by the government but also it is challenges

to the construction industry players that have the guts to get involved in IBS construction. In general, most of the industry players has been influenced by a negative thought which the implementation of IBS is not cost effective compared to conventional method. So, the study was done to determine the cost comparison based on technical data between IBS which used half slab with the conventional method for slab structure and also to get the perception of industrial players on IBS and conventional method through questionnaire surveys. From the results obtained, the difference in percentage of both construction method and it can be said as the percentage of reduction in cost for the calculated floor slab is 11.7%. This shows that IBS offers a good reduction in cost compared to conventional system.

Abstract: In air pollution studies, one of the main purposes is to compute the air pollutants composition from sources of emission. One of the most frequently used statistical methods in determining the air pollutants composition is Extreme Value Distributions (EVD). This study determines and differentiates the effectiveness of Particulate Matter 10 (PM10) result analysis based on one 24-hour interval and two 12-hours intervals in a day at Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), Kuala Lumpur. The EVD analysis consists of Gumbel Distribution (Type I), Frechet Distribution (Type II) and Weibull Distribution (Type III). There are two performance indicators namely Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) from error measures and Coefficient of Determination (R2) from accuracy measures that will be used to assess distribution analysis. The two 12-hours intervals will be just on 13 November 2014 using Frechet Distribution for detailed EVD analysis. From the 24-hours result analysis, the probability of exceedances for 13 November 2014 is 0.0754 with 78 predicted and 52 actual number of unhealthy minutes based on the best distribution for that day itself which is Frechet Distribution (Type II). For 14 November 2014, the probability of exceedances is 0.0845 with 40 predicted and 39 actual number of unhealthy minutes based on Gumbel Distribution (Type I). As for the 12-hours intervals, the probability of exceedances is 0.0372 for the first interval and 0.1103 for the second interval. The predicted and actual number of unhealthy minutes is 14 and 8 respectively. All the observed and predicted PM10 values will be compared with the threshold value 61ug/m3 to determine the exceedances.

Abstract: In electric power applications, autotransformers are used to step-up / step-down single or three phase line voltages. The autotransformer has the usual magnetic core but only has one winding. Therefore, the autotransformer can offer no interference or disturbance isolation. However, due to the magnetic core and winding, the autotransformer is heavy and bulky. Furthermore, the autotransformer is difficult to achieve high power efficiency. In this paper, we propose a parallel-connected switched capacitor (SC) AC-AC converter with symmetrical topology. Unlike any transformer, the proposed converter requires no magnetic element. Therefore, the proposed converter can achieve light weight, small converter size, high power efficiency, and high input power factor. Furthermore, due to the parallel-connected symmetrical topology, the proposed converter can realize a large current output and a small output ripple. Concerning the proposed converter, operation principle, qualitative analysis and simulation evaluation are described. The simulation program with integrated circuit emphasis (SPICE) simulation demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed AC-AC converter.

Abstract: Critical thinking is important in education. Previous studies have found that critical thinking students are influenced by the teacher’s teaching pattern. Therefore, Islamic education teachers (IETs) should apply critical thinking in their teaching. However, the concept of critical thinking today is developed and characterized by the West. Thus, IET should explore further about the concept of critical thinking to increase their understanding because this understanding will guide them in their classroom teaching approach. The main purpose of this qualitative study was to explore IET’s understanding about the concept of critical thinking in Islamic education. The main findings of this study show that the concept of critical thinking according to IET is comprised of three categories, namely; critical dispositions, critical thinking skills and the values which guide their thinking.

and to study the effect of educational campaign on the Cholera transmission. The developed model based on the Cholera model of Mukandavire et al (2012) by taking the educational campaign into account in the model. The standard method was used to analyze the model that was to study the equilibrium points and stability, the basic reproductive number, the analytic solution and the numerical solution. The research findings revealed that the model of Cholera is represented by a system of differential equation consists of four equations, that is, the number of susceptible human, the number of infected human , the number of recovered human and V. cholerae population in the water. There were two equilibrium points: disease free equilibrium point and endemic equilibrium point. The basic reproductive number,

h

β NR =

γ+τ+μ and the stability of each equilibrium point were local

asymptotically stable. For the numerical result at the disease free equilibrium, we obtained,

0R 0.109995 1 this mean that no spread of

cholera and the numerical result at the endemic equilibrium point, we obtained 0R 1.09995 1 , this mean that the cholera will occur. If the

effective of educational campaign and water treatment increase then the number of infected human will decrease, this means no outbreaks of disease. The educational campaign and water treatment can be the affective way to control for this disease.

Abstract: The study investigated the effect of solvent types, concentration of solvent, liquid to solid ratio (LSR), temperature, time and sonication amplitude on the acid and alkaline pretreatment of nipah palm fruit husks using ultrasonic method. The pretreatment was carried out using hydrochloric acid, sulphuric acid, and citric acid. Meanwhile the alkaline pretreatment used sodium hydroxide and calcium hydroxide. Total reducing sugar (TRS) yielded from each pretreatment were estimated using DNS method. In fact, characterization of untreated and pretreated nipah husks was done using scanning electron microscope (SEM) to observe the effect of each pretreatment to the morphology of the samples. Screening results shown that nipah husks pretreated with 40% w/v NaOH, LSR 10:1, sonication amplitude 50% at 80°C for 20 minutes yielded the highest total reducing sugar (TRS), 78.79 g/L. The study indicated that pretreatment of nipah husks using sodium hydroxide is more effective to release fermentable sugars compared to the pretreatment with other solvents. Through SEM, the effects of each pretreatment were able to be

1Department of Mathematics, Faculty of Science and Technology, Suratthani Rajabhat University, Surat Thani, 84100, Thailand

Abstract: Chikungunya is a vector borne disease which is transmitted to human by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti). In this paper, a mathematical model of Chikungunya has been proposed and analyzed. In 2008, the south of Thailand has been occurred a large outbreak of this disease when there are the mobility of population from place to place especially migrant workers. For this model, the human population is divided into two classes; host population and migrant workers population. Thus, migrant workers in rubber plantation have been taken into account in the model. Stability analysis of the model has been carried out. We have derived the threshold condition, basic reproductive number. We found that there has two equilibrium points; disease free equilibrium point and endemic equilibrium point. Local stability of both equilibrium points is discussed and the numerical results are shown for some value of parameters. It concluded that the alternative way to control the spread of Chikungunya fever by reducing the mobility of the migrant workers and host human in the community when the Chikungunya occurs.

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to propose the mathematical model on the transmission of Dengue fever and to analyze the mathematical model of Dengue fever transmission. The human population is divided into 3 subclass , that is , the susceptible human, infected human and recovered human and the mosquito population which divided into 2 subclass, that is, the susceptible mosquito and infected mosquito. We investigate the

effect of parameter vhβ (the transmission rate from mosquito – to -

human ) and hvβ (the transmission rate from human – to –

mosquito) and the calculation of the level of infection (Basic

Reproductive Number : 0R ) and to study disease – free equilibrium

and disease endemic equilibrium states. After that, to determine the solutions by using the numerical simulation at each equilibrium points which affected to the local asymptotically stabilities, to

determine of parameter vhβ (the transmission rate from mosquito –

to –human ) and vhβ (the transmission rate from mosquito – to –

human), by using vhβ = 0.05 and hvβ = 0.05 which showed

196521500 .R . The results showed that the all subclass of human

were uninfected, it also showed that there were no the transmission of the disease. In addition, as regards to the numerical simulation and the parameter at disease – free equilibrium which affected to the local asymptotically stabilities, the results of the

parameter showed; hvβ and vhβ , by using 9.0hv β and 9.0vh β

the results showed 14708310 .R that mean there are the

transmission of the disease.

badminton players (EB), twenty-four subelite badminton players (SB) and twenty-eight non-athletes (controls). ‘JC Mat’, the optical plantar pressure measurement, was applied to examining all subjects’ arch index (AI), plantar pressure distributions (PPD), and footprint characteristics. Pain assessment and self-reported health status were undertaken for evaluating the badminton players’ common pain locations. Findings from the control group, the AI fell into the normal range. The badminton players’ arch type was classified as high-arched feet. PPD at the lateral longitudinal arch and the lateral heel of both feet, and the medial heel of the left foot was significantly higher in the badminton players, particularly the EB, than in the controls. PPD at the lateral metatarsal bone of both feet was significantly lower in the badminton players than in the controls. Compared with the SB, the EB had lower PPD in the lateral metatarsal bone of both feet. Footprint characteristics supported the results of the AI and PPD, and this reflected the corresponding pressure profiles. The badminton players’ lateral ankle and knee joints, and gastrocnemius were the most common pain locations. The badminton players’ AI and PPD were generally classified as high-arched supinators, and their pain profiles paralleled the symptoms of foot supination. The findings reflected the possible link between badminton injuries and supinated feet, and the correlation is worth further studies.
