To the Graduands of 2016:
Congratulations!
I am proud to join you on this extraordinary occasion and wish you well as you move forward as leaders in our global community.
Convocation marks a day when the whole University turns its focus to its reason for being. This is a university where the next generation of leaders is born and where students from all walks of life can achieve their dreams.
Every one of you has much to be proud of today and I encourage you to take great satisfaction in seeing the results of your hard work. You are the stars of the show; relish your accomplishments!
Today we look to the future with great anticipation and optimism. The University of Winnipeg graduates have much to offer Canada and the world beyond our borders. Be persistent, pursue your goals, and know that you will have our continued support along the way.

It is my honour, on behalf of The University of Winnipeg community, to offer sincere congratulations to each of you on your achievements. Today we gather to celebrate your success and to pause and reflect on where you will go next — whether you are launching a career, pursuing further studies, or taking off to explore the world — you have reached an important milestone on your journey.
This is also a time for us to recognize and value the support and encouragement you have received from professors, family, friends, and fellow students who have helped you realize your dreams. It was Rudyard Kipling who said “He travels the fastest who travels alone.” A wise person adds “We who travel farthest, travel with others.”
UWinnipeg is located on Treaty One land in the heart of the Métis nation, and we are a richly diverse community. It is our underlying strength. We are deeply committed to reaching out to all students, including those who have traditionally faced barriers to participating in post-secondary education. I hope you have been enriched by the exposure to the many ideas, cultures and life experiences that flourish here.
You are now members of the extended UWinnipeg family, joining more than 50,000 people who have passed through these doors as students. I am one of those graduates, and I attribute my academic and career successes to the solid foundation I received at UWinnipeg and the dedicated professors who inspired me to continue to strive and learn.
It is our sincere hope that your time at UWinnipeg has allowed you to realize your unique talents as you move forward to create a difference in your community.

Welcome to the Fall 2016 Convocation at The University of Winnipeg!
It is at this important moment that we congratulate the graduating class of 2016 as they celebrate the successful completion of their degree programs. For all of your hard work, and for all you will do in the coming years, we want to recognize and honour your achievements.
This year, The Alumni Association Council is proud to present internationally-renowned architectural historian Dr. Frank Albo with the Distinguished Alumni Award for his numerous contributions to The University of Winnipeg. In addition to Dr. Albo’s impeccable academic record, his ground-breaking research on the Manitoba Legislative Building (the basis for his book, The Hermetic Code) continues to make an indelible impact upon architectural scholarship both in Canada and abroad. As a scholar of global importance and a prominent alumnus of The University of Winnipeg, Dr. Albo is a worthy addition to the University’s distinguished list of honoured alumni.
Like Dr. Albo, today’s graduates are poised to make their own impact on the world. The knowledge that our many students have acquired over the past years of dedicated study will undoubtedly translate into a legacy of leadership and lifelong learning.

Ida Albo is an accomplished economist, successful entrepreneur, and ardent community supporter whose impassioned generosity and civic pride drives her desire to improve the quality of life for all Winnipeggers. As co-owner of the iconic Fort Garry Hotel, Spa and Conference Centre, she has worked tirelessly for many years to restore the 1913 landmark and transform it into one of the city’s finest hotels and most popular event venues. She followed up that labour of love by sharing her passion for yoga — co-founding downtown Winnipeg’s Yoga Public.
Born and raised in Winnipeg’s inner city, Albo exemplifies the values of hard work and a good education — instilled by her parents, who were new immigrants from Italy.
Among her many volunteer commitments, she has served UWinnipeg as a member of the Alumni Association Council, as a Board of Regent, and as an active UWinnipeg Foundation board member and generous supporter of the Duff Roblin Gala Dinner, which raises funds for Indigenous scholars. She earned a BA (Honours) degree in Economics from UWinnipeg in 1981 and a MA in Economics from Queen’s University in 1982.
Albo is a community booster who rolls up her sleeves and gets involved to strengthen the fabric of our city. She has given her time and energy to numerous community and charitable organizations, among them: CentreVenture Development Corporation, where she was instrumental spearheading the Plaza Skate Park as well as in the rebirth of Winnipeg’s Central Park; Canadian Tourism Commission; Health Sciences Centre Research Foundation; Manning Foundation; Cancer Care Manitoba; Winnipeg Symphony; and the Pan Am Clinic Foundation. Albo is currently on the boards of Cancer Care Manitoba, Winnipeg Symphony, Canada Games 2017, and Manitoba Business Council; she is also Chair of the WAG Gala.
In recognition of her many years of service to others, Albo was awarded the Variety Children’s Charity Gold Heart in 2010 and UWinnipeg’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2012. She was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2015.
The University of Winnipeg is proud to recognize Ida Albo — alumna, entrepreneur, fundraiser, community builder, and volunteer — with an Honorary Doctor of Laws.

Through advocacy, mentorship, and education, Dr. Alan Diduck has made numerous and lasting contributions to campus sustainability at The University of Winnipeg. As a professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences and Acting Associate Dean of the Faculty of Science, Diduck has empowered students to rally for better environmental practices and positive changes inside and outside of the classroom for more than a decade.
An involved faculty member and champion of socio-political empowerment, Diduck provided invaluable mentorship to students involved in the SUNSET (Sustainable University Now, Sustainable Environment Tomorrow) group as they successfully advocated for the creation of a campus-wide sustainability initiative between 2003 and 2006. He has also served on many committees, including the Campus Sustainability Council and the Academic Working Group on Sustainability, and was involved in the development of the Richardson College for the Environment.
Notably, Diduck has taken on the development of a campus sustainability course, which debuted in Winter Term 2016. The course tasked students with creating projects, proposals and feasibility studies that addressed environmental sustainability at UWinnipeg. Student work from the first session of the special topics course included the development of a seed library, research into opportunities for storm water management on campus, and a proposal for strategies to better integrate sustainability into the curriculum.
Diduck’s investment in the new campus sustainability course typifies his commitment to student empowerment and his regard for the university as a living laboratory.

Throughout her long and distinguished career, which spans nearly four decades at The University of Winnipeg, Eva Pip has served the community as a researcher, academic, and advocate for clean water.
Pip sets a standard to which many academics aspire, but few achieve. She has built a research career on topics of direct interest to the public at large — centering around water quality — and has skillfully communicated this work to the public, all levels of government, and academia.
Pip has long maintained a direct interest in the health and welfare of First Nations communities, and was one of the first to highlight the chronic water quality issues they face. She has conducted extensive work on groundwater and the effects of industrial agriculture. Additionally, Pip was one of the first to emphasize water quality problems on Lake Winnipeg and is an ongoing advocate for its health.
Pip’s expertise is regularly sought out when new reports on water are published, when there is an accidental spill, and when new
environmental regulations are proposed. She often is called upon by government agencies and academic colleagues to consult on water issues, and also serves as an expert in legal proceedings when required.
Pip effectively shares her expertise with the public in multiple forums, is always available to offer insight to the media, and is directly engaged in community work. She still makes time to present papers on her extensive research at national and international meetings and to professional societies, all while serving on numerous boards and advisory committees.
For a second* time, The University of Winnipeg honours Eva Pip with The Clarence Atchison Award for Excellence in Community Service — a reflection of her vigor, technical expertise, and genuine commitment to service that has helped impact water protection policy to the benefit of public and environmental health.

Marilou McPhedran is a human rights lawyer and professor who serves as the founding Director of the Institute for International Women’s Rights at The University of Winnipeg Global College and on the boards of the community-based “sister” organization, Institute for International Women’s Rights – Manitoba, and of the Legal Help Centre, both of which she co-founded. Marilou led Global College in the launching of one of the world’s few undergraduate human rights majors and she continues to design and teach innovative, collaborative courses that integrate concepts of human security and human rights. She has worked with a wide range of stakeholders, including agencies in the United Nations, the University for Peace in Costa Rica, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, Ma Mawi Wi Chi Itata Centre, Rotary World Peace Partners, Women for Women South Sudan, and numerous other organizations.
A pioneer in research and advocacy to counter human rights violations through systemic reform — in law, medicine, education, and government — she describes her work as “evidence-based advocacy” for
achieving “lived rights”. Last month, as the chair of the Minister’s Task Force on Sexual Abuse of Patients in Ontario, she delivered bold recommendations set in an “ecological human rights framework”.
Her honours include the Order of Canada, in recognition of her efforts towards stronger gender equality protections in the Canadian constitution, and an Honorary Doctorate from her alma mater, The University of Winnipeg. Named one of Canada’s ten most influential women’s rights advocates in Homemakers Magazine and Woman of the Year by B’nai Brith Women, she is also a recipient of Queen’s Jubilee and Diamond Jubilee Medals. In the past year she has been featured among “Women Who Inspire” by the Canadian Council of Muslim Women, awarded the “Dianne Martin Medal for Social Justice Through Law” by Osgoode Hall Law School, and named an “Access to Justice Champion” in the Law Times.

Dr. Frank Albo is an internationally renowned architectural historian and is known locally as the inspiration behind The Hermetic Code, a bestselling book detailing the fascinating secrets and symbolism of the architecture of the Manitoba Legislative Building. More than 22,000 people have taken his tours of the building and been exposed to the numerological, masonic, and esoteric meanings behind the home of the Provincial government.
After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree at The University of Winnipeg in 2002, Albo went on to further his studies at the University of Toronto, the University of Amsterdam, and the University of Cambridge, Peterhouse — where he ultimately attained his MPhil and PhD. He has taught locally at The University of Winnipeg and University of Manitoba for ten years and is currently Adjunct Professor of History at UWinnipeg.
Albo has been published in numerous academic journals on topics as varied as French gardens, the Gothic Revival, Kabbalah, and of course the Golden Boy — and he regularly appears in media throughout North America, Europe, and
Central Asia discussing architectural topics. His latest book, to be released in the coming months, lays out a foundation myth encoded into the breathtaking architecture of Astana, the capital city of Kazakhstan.
Albo has also advised several prominent architectural firms and museums, including the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, as well as governmental bodies locally and in Europe.
“Dr. Albo is a widely respected historian and proud Winnipegger who has spent more than a decade educating locals and tourists alike on what may be Manitoba’s most notable building. His time at The University of Winnipeg, just down the street from the Legislative Building, surely helped to inspire his work, and he will be a wonderful addition to our exclusive list of Distinguished Alumni,” said former Alumni Association President Kevin Freedman.

Ying Yang is an accomplished scholar who has earned numerous honours and awards, including The University of Winnipeg’s prestigious Sir William Stephenson Scholarship, as well as the Great-West Life Scholarship and Work Placement. He is also an active volunteer who served as President of the Golden Key Honour Society (UWinnipeg Chapter). Yang leaves a legacy in the Faculty of Business and Economics, having established a new tutoring service specializing in different business subjects. He is well-liked and respected, both by his peers and his professors.
Yang grew up China and immigrated to Winnipeg five years ago. He decided to go back to school and says his years at UWinnipeg have allowed him to build a network of colleagues and friends. He has now completed a four-year Bachelor of
Business Administration degree and was immediately hired full time as a senior business analyst by Great-West Life. In the future, he hopes to attain an MBA. Yang’s passion and research focus is creating sustainable purchasing practices, which he sees as an important trend for businesses.
Among his many achievements, Yang has received UWinnipeg’s Academic Proficiency Scholarship and the Buhler Scholarship in Business and Economics. He also was on the Dean’s Honour List — Student of Highest Distinction.
Yang’s message to his fellow graduates is simple: be humble. He believes that if you surround yourself with good people, and remain open and willing to take advice — that is success.

ACADEMIC DRESS
Academic dress originated in medieval times to provide warmth in the damp halls of learning. In its present form it includes a gown, hood (worn over the shoulders) and a cap or mortarboard. All universities have distinctive dress for each degree offered, which explains the variety seen in the academic procession.
The University of Winnipeg academic dress conforms to the North American Intercollegiate Code. All graduates wear a black gown which varies according to the degree conferred. The bachelor’s gown is worn closed in front and is distinguished by its pointed sleeves. The master’s gown is designed to be worn either open or closed in front and has closed sleeves with an opening to free the hands. The front portion of the sleeve below the opening has a long semi-circular cut-out. Doctorate gowns also may be worn open or closed. They are faced with velvet.
The edging colour on the hood indicates the faculty in which a degree is conferred: Graduate Studies – red; Science – gold; Education – blue; Arts – white; Business & Economics – brown; Kinesiology - green. The width of edging is determined by the degree: three inches for doctors; two inches for masters and bachelors. Hoods are lined in red with a white chevron.
Honorary doctors’ gowns are red in colour and are faced with white velvet. They are worn with red Tudor bonnets. The hood colour signifies the honorary degree: white for Laws; golden yellow for Science; admiralty blue for Letters; purple for Divinity. Hoods are lined in red and white – The University of Winnipeg colours. Fellows wear a gown of blue with neither hat nor hood. Members of The University’s senior administration wear gowns of varying colours. They do not wear hoods.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG COAT OF ARMS
The Coat of Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governing bodies of The University during the academic session of 1972-73. The elements found within the Coat of Arms have been associated over the years with both Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The bunch of grapes in the lower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat of Arms of Manitoba College. The grape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of 1871. The cross, the lamp and the open book derive from the Coat of Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897 by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross – the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity – was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield – the
symbol of protection. The lamp – the symbol of light – also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devoted for over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book – representing instruction in the way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student – symbolizes knowledge in a general sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limited interpretation.
The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, here retained: Lux et Veritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of the lamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as the grape) in our country (the cross).
The banner, prominently displaying the Coat of Arms, was unveiled in 1988. The volunteer effort of Pat Corner, Fran Farquhar, Susan Ferguson and Sonya C. Wright took more than 1,000 hours. Over
400 meters of thread and 30 meters of wool material went into the project, using traditional techniques such as quilting, embroidery and crewel.

THE UNIVERSITY OF WINNIPEG COAT OF ARMS
The Coat of Arms of The University of Winnipeg was officially adopted by the governing bodies of The University during the academic session of 1972-73. The elements found within the Coat of Arms have been associated over the years with both Manitoba and Wesley Colleges, the ancestors of United College. The bunch of grapes in the lower portion of the inner shield derives from the Coat of Arms of Manitoba College. The grape symbol has its origin in the College seal adopted in the charter of 1871. The cross, the lamp and the open book derive from the Coat of Arms of Wesley College, designed in 1897 by Dr. J.H. Riddell. The cross – the symbol of sacrificial service in the interest of humanity – was the basis for his design and upon it he placed a shield – the
symbol of protection. The lamp – the symbol of light – also represents learning, to which the Colleges have been devoted for over a century in the Province of Manitoba. The open book – representing instruction in the way of life and the bringing of understanding to the student – symbolizes knowledge in a general sense, although it may carry overtones of the Holy Scriptures in a more limited interpretation.
The motto, placed upon a scroll below, is the United College motto, here retained: Lux et Veritas Floreant (Let Light and Truth Flourish). The words catch the central import of the lamp (light) and the open book (truth), and express the hope that both may flourish (as the grape) in our country (the cross).
The banner, prominently displaying the Coat of Arms, was unveiled in 1988. The volunteer effort of Pat Corner, Fran Farquhar, Susan Ferguson and Sonya C. Wright took more than 1,000 hours. Over
400 meters of thread and 30 meters of wool material went into the project, using traditional techniques such as quilting, embroidery and crewel.
