WHO WE ARE Program OverviewThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program is a Canadian university and college based, international co-op/internship program linking some of the

best undergraduate and graduate students in the engineering, science, business and arts discipline from across Canada with highly committed

Japanese businesses. The Canada-Japan Co-op Program formally integrates an undergraduate/graduate student’s Canadian academic studies

with valuable work experience in a Japanese company. The program is open to universities and colleges nationally and is administered from the

University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada.

MandateThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program’s mandate is to provide Canadian undergraduate and graduate co-op students with career-related relevant

and paid work experience with a Japanese company during their academic curriculum. At the same time we provide Japanese companies with

the opportunity to employ highly capable and motivated Canadian co-op students from across the country.

VisionThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program’s vision is to be the best program for Canadian undergraduate and graduate co-op students wishing to complete

Co-op work terms/internship in Japan and the leading international Co-op/internship program for Japanese employers requiring experienced and

pre-qualifi ed Canadian co-op students.

MissionThe Canada-Japan Co-op Program’s mission is to provide top caliber Canadian undergraduate and graduate Co-op students with high quality

career-oriented work opportunities in Japan as well as to provide participating Japanese employers with Canadian undergraduate and graduate

students who can make valuable contributions to their organizations.

プログラム概要日加コー･オプ･プログラムは、カナダ全域の大学、カレッジの高等教育機関で構成され、日本産業、企業に高い関心を示す工学部、理系、ビジネス、文系の優秀な学生と日本の産業、企業とのパイプ役を担うインターンシッププログラムです。学生の大学教育と日本企業での実務経験を系統的に統合することが目的です。現在、ブリティッシュ・コロンビア大学にプログラムオフィスが設置されています。

マンデート学生が在学期間中に日本企業で貴重な実務経験を積むためのものであると同時に、高度な技術と意欲を持ったカナダの学生を活用する機会を日本企業に提供します。

AMBASSADOR’S MESSAGE The Embassy of Canada to Japan is pleased to support the Canada-Japan Co-op Program. This program has helped facilitate international

research collaboration, stimulate technology adoption and transfer, and promote mutual understanding between Canadian and Japanese people.

Canadian students are provided the opportunity to work with

innovative Japanese enterprises to obtain new skills and knowledge while

contributing to the success of their host companies. The Program also

enables Japanese fi rms and their employees to acquire a better knowledge

of the people and culture of Canada and to gain a Canadian perspective on

their work through the input of the highly educated and motivated student

participants.

I am grateful for the willingness of Japanese companies to sponsor

Canada-Japan Co-op Program students, and am confi dent that the

participating fi rms will continue to fi nd the program benefi cial. For

companies and students alike, the Co-op Program is a rewarding experience

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE 2016 marked the 25th anniversary of The Canada-Japan Co-op Program. Since it was launched in 1991, more than 1,000 students and 75

employers have participated in this unique national consortium co-op program—with far-reaching personal and professional impact.

Hundreds of students have pursued rewarding and challenging work terms in Japan, gaining hands-on experience in a range of industries and

immersing themselves in a diff erent culture, signifi cantly expanding their horizons and opening up opportunities that would not have otherwise

been available to them. The majority of our alumni maintain ties with Japan, whether it is through their ongoing connection with work colleagues

or returning to Japan for graduate studies or employment after completing their undergraduate degree in Canada.

The program has had an equally powerful impact on our Japanese employers and their employees. Over the past 25 years, they’ve benefi tted

from sponsoring our dynamic and technically skilled students who have contributed to their organizations in countless ways, including contributing

research that has led to journal publication and patents. The close co-operation between universities, Japanese employers and the Embassy of

Canada in Tokyo has deepened the relationship ties between Canada and Japan and has been instrumental to the program’s success.

On a personal note, I would like to acknowledge what a pleasure it has

been to serve as director of The Canada-Japan Co-op Program. I received

a call from colleagues when on maternity leave in 2004 asking if I would

take on the role of director, following in the footsteps of inaugural director

Susan Huggett and then Barry Brooks from the University of Victoria. I had

no idea the profound impact this position would have on my life or of the

strong and long-term connections that I would develop with our Japanese

partner companies, my colleagues from other participating Canadian post-

secondary institutions and program alumni.

I would be amiss if I did not mention Yuko Nemoto, the backbone of our

operation and program assistant for The Canada-Japan Co-op Program.

Her passion, enthusiasm and dedication to the program is so greatly

appreciated – our job is an easy one, we love what we do!

Happy 25th to all our program stakeholders. And for new and potential

students and employers who are reading this report, please join us and help

us grow the program over the next 25 years!

2016年、日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP）は、プログラム創立から25周年を迎えます。CJCPは参加大学で構成されるカナダ唯一のコンソーシアムで、1991年の創立以来1000人以上の学生、および75社余りの受け入れ企業が参加し、個人の人生やそのキャリアにおいて大きな影響を与えていると言えます。

多くの学生は、日本での有意義な研修機会、様々な業界での実務経験、異文化への理解、大いに視野を広げる機会など、またとないこれからのチャンスのためにプログラムへ応募してきます。卒業生の多くは、研修後も共に働いた同僚と親交を深めたり、卒業後に日本の大学院へ入学、または、学位修得後、日本で就職したりなど、日本との繋がりを持ち続けています。

CJCPは、受け入れ企業、そこで働く社員の方々にも同様の影響を与えていると思います。活動的で研修先に貢献できるスキルを身に付けている学生を受け入れるメリット、例えば、学生が携わった研究を論文にして、学会で発表したり、特許取得などが含まれると思います。このプログラムの成功の鍵となっているのは、参加大学、

受け入れ企業、在日カナダ大使館の協力のお陰で、日本とカナダの関係をより深めていると思います。

個人的なことになりますが、CJCPのディレクターである喜びを心より感謝しています。2004年の私が産休中に、参加大学の同僚より電話があり、CJCPのディレクター職を引き受けないか打診がありました。初代プログラムディレクターのSusan Huggett氏、ビクトリア大学のBarry Brooks氏についでのディレクターとなりました。その時には、私の人生にどれほどの影響を及ぼすのか、受け入れ企業、カナダの高等教育機関である参加大学の同僚、プログラム卒業生とこれほど長きに渡って繋がりを築いていくとは思ってもみませんでした。

CJCPを語る上で、プログラムを支える中心となっているプログラムアシスタントである根本優子の存在は欠かせません。彼女のプログラムへの情熱、献身に対し、敬意を表します。私達は、自分達の仕事を楽しんでいます！

この場をお借りして、プログラム創立より25周年を迎えられましたことを全てのプログラム関係者に御礼申し上げます。

STUDENT STATISTICSPlacement History and Program Statistics: In 2015/16, 52 Canadian undergraduate/graduate university students worked in 21 Japanese companies/locations for a total of 107 four-month

Co-op work terms. In 2015/16, 21 students were employed in 11- to 12-month internships (three four-month Co-op work terms), 22 students were

employed in seven eight-month internships (two four-month Co-op work terms) and nine students were employed in four-month internships (one

four-month Co-op work term).

APPLICATION PROCESS Students who meet the following criteria can apply to The Canada-Japan Co-op Program at any time during the year:

• Students must be from a member Canada-Japan Co-op College or University and enrolled in a Co-op Program;

• Students must have completed at least one Japanese language course or have committed to completing a course prior to departure to Japan;

• Students must have completed at least one Co-op/internship work term in Canada prior to departure to Japan;

• Students should have at least one full-time academic term left to complete upon return from Japan;

• Students must be fl exible with respect to the type of work they accept, the duration of their work term and willingness to work in the

geographical location in which they may be placed; and

• Students should possess a mature attitude and be enthusiastic about living and working in Japan. They should also demonstrate a desire to

learn about Japanese culture

Once students apply to The Canada-Japan Co-op Program, the Liaison Offi cer at their home institution provides an online recommendation

of their application that is reviewed by The Canada-Japan Co-op Program. Once participation is approved, students have access to job postings

and are eligible to apply for available work opportunities in Japan. Once a student has accepted a position with a Canada-Japan Co-op Program

employer, he or she is required to participate in a one-week mandatory training week in Vancouver prior to departure.

があること 日加コー･オプ･プログラム申し込み希望学生は、在籍大学のコーディネーターと面接を行い、コーディネーターの推薦を受けた後、日加コー･オプ･プログラムで最終受け入れ審査を行います。最終的に受け入れが決まった学生に、参加企業の募集要項、業務内容が知らされます。 研修希望学生は、日本語の口答、又は、筆記による試験を受けます。その結果は、受け入れ希望企業に報告されます。内定が決まった学生は、日本での研修開始前にバンクーバーで行われるオリエンテーションに参加します。

Introduction to a Canada-Japan Co-op Program member institutionSophie Boulanger, Co-ordinator for international internships

Institution: École de technologie supérieure

I had the great privilege of participating in the pre-departure session for Canadian students in May in my role as co-op co-ordinator at Ecole

de Technologie Superieure, a member institution of The Canada-Japan Co-op Program.

The session gave me a better understanding of the program and some basic elements of Japanese work culture, allowing me to better

promote the program to our students. It was great to meet the diverse Canadian students who are motivated by an internship in Japan, as well as

the business people who work in Japan. This session also allowed me to discover Vancouver and the University of British Columbia for the fi rst

time.

It was memorable to meet Yuko Nemoto, who is so exceptionally dedicated to this program. I wish to thank her especially for everything.

Are you interested in saving lives through the work you do?

This is the question we always ask each applicant during the phone interviews for our internship program. At Autoliv, we estimate that our

products save over 30,000 lives and prevent ten times that number of injuries each year, and we are working to signifi cantly increase these

numbers. For over 60 years, we have been fi rst and foremost a safety technology company. We develop and manufacture radar and vision

products in Active Safety, and we were the fi rst in the world to launch night vision systems. Meeting real-world customer needs has helped us

become the market leader in automotive safety.

We want promising talent to take part in our Active Safety activities and work with us toward a shared goal: autonomous driving. With our

fast-paced working environment, we seek talented associates who crave learning new skills and aren’t afraid to rise to the challenge and tackle

big projects. We believe “learning” is interactive, and this is a key part of being a learning organization and developing our people to attain higher

levels. When we teach others, we also reinforce our own learning and develop a deeper understanding of the concepts that form the foundation

of our products. That is why we support the internship program.

Let’s talk a little bit more about this program. Our ideal candidate is someone who is task-oriented, self-motivated and works well with others.

We are looking for someone who is interested in international business and who is creative and thoughtful in interacting with those of other

cultures. Although located in Japan, a good percentage of our staff are from other Asian countries, as well as from Europe, Africa and North

America. Living in a diff erent environment like Japan gives interns the opportunity to learn a new language and discover how to cope with other

cultures through fi rst-hand experience. By living in a diff erent culture, interns are also able to grow and think of new ideas from new angles.

We currently have two interns, Chelsea Reid and Roger Luo, from The Canada-Japan Co-op Program. These students have been a good

infl uence in the offi ce. Our current CJCP students have taught us the importance of being good role models in a professional working environment,

It has been almost 20 years since we fi rst accepted a co-op student through The Canada-Japan Co-op Program (CJCP). Students work on

various research topics at our Central Research Laboratory in Sakura-city, Chiba, which has convenient and easy access to Narita airport.

Each of the students who have come to work with us has been very serious, focused and highly adaptable to our research themes. The CJCP

pre-departure training clearly provides students with adequate knowledge and information: the students try to understand the Japanese culture

and mentality, and they seem to blend in well at work right after their arrival.

One of our objectives in accepting students from Canada is to provide our researchers, especially young researchers, with the opportunity to

improve their communication skills in English. Young researchers are assigned to work with a co-op student, and through this experience some

of our staff have dramatically improved their TOEIC scores. Another major reason for hiring co-op students is that they contribute greatly to our

research development.

Experiments are central to our research process, and our co-op students are devoted to patiently conducting experiments over and over to

collect a large number of samples and produce accurate results. Their careful and precise work often leads to data that we use for future research

development, conference presentations and research papers.

Participating in CJCP benefi ts us while providing co-op students with fulfi lling research opportunities. We currently have a co-op student from

the University of British Columbia, and we hope to have many more Canadian students come work with us.

弊社がCJCPを通じてカナダの学生を受け入れるようになってから、もう20年近く経っているでしょうか。弊社に来て頂く学生さんには，成田空港のアクセスも便利な千葉県佐倉市の中央研究所にて、様々な研究開発に取り組んで頂いています。

　新しい学生を受け入れるたびにいつも思うのは、どの学生も大変まじめで集中力があり、与えられた研究開発テーマに対する適応力が高いことです。また、来日前のカナダでの教育研修が整っているからでしょうか、日本の文化、特に日本人のメンタリティーに対する知識・理解があるようで、来日直後から直ぐに職場に溶け込めているようです。

　弊社にとってカナダの学生に来て頂く理由の一つは、研究員（特に若手）の英語コミュニケーション力向上にあります。基本的に、学生さんへの業務指導は若手が担当することとなっていますが、そうしたことによって、TOEICスコアを飛躍的にアップさせた者もありました。また、学生さんが弊社の研究開発を推進する上で重要な戦力となっていることも、学生受け入れの大きな理由となっています。

弊社の研究開発において、実験作業は研究を進める上での重要なプロセスですが、どの学生も忍耐強く実験作業に従事し、貴重なデータを残していきました（実験作業では多数のサンプルを相手にするため，同じ処理・作業の繰り返しとなり忍耐強さが求められ、また、正しい結果を得るために、作業に対する慎重さ・正確さも求められます）。そうした彼らの成果は、次の研究開発テーマに活用されるとともに、内容が基礎研究に関わるものであれば、学会発表や論文投稿へと発展することも多数ありました。

　このように、弊社にとって本プログラムはメリットのある事業ですが、弊社に来て頂く学生さんにとっても、充実した研修活動となるよう努力をしております。今現在も、ブリティッシュコロンビア大学から一名の学生さんに来て頂いていますが、彼もまた多くの成果を残し有意義な日本滞在となるよう、また、これからもカナダとの友好な関係が続き、多くの学生さんに来て頂けますよう、願っている次第です。

I am incredibly honoured to receive the Student of the Year

award. During my time in Japan, I acquired new technical skills,

overcame the challenges of cross-cultural communication and

learned some invaluable lessons about myself. I sincerely hope that I

have been able to facilitate an exchange between Canada and Japan,

and I look forward to opportunities to continue this in the future.

ALUMNI STORY Phoebe Liu

Discipline: Electronics Engineering

I was in my fi nal semester of engineering science at Simon Fraser University, but I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after I graduated. When I found

out about The Canada-Japan Co-op Program, I knew it was the perfect opportunity for me to gain international work experience and explore diff erent

perspectives . I applied to the program and was off ered an intern position at the Intelligent Robotics and Communication Laboratories at Advanced

Telecommunications Research Institute International (ATR). So in the summer of 2009, I took off for a new adventure to Kansai, little knowing that

this work term would change my life.

I was involved in developing software for various research projects. As I got to know the diff erent people and their projects in the lab, I came to

realize how diverse the fi eld of robotics can be – with people from many diff erent academic backgrounds contributing their expertise to fi nding out

what makes a better robot. This research might explore the ethical impact of robots in the real world, how a robot’s appearance aff ects our interaction

and relationship with it, and algorithms for more socially appropriate generative robot behaviours.

After I fi nished my work term, I knew I wanted to continue working with robots – it was a dynamic fi eld many people can connect to and it has

applications to our daily life. ATR has a strong connection with Osaka University, so applied to the Intelligent Robotics Laboratory at Osaka University

directed by Professor Hiroshi Ishiguro, and was accepted into its master’s program in the autumn of 2011.

I completed my master’s degree and am now in the process of completing my doctorate degree. I am working part-time at ATR as a PhD

candidate, which is where I conduct my research. My research involves using a completely data-driven approach for a robot to automatically learn

how to talk, move and interact – solely using sensor data that captures how humans interact with each other. With today’s trend to big-data systems

and cloud services – and robots being used more in real life – I think research like mine will contribute to helping robots learn and behave with more

social intelligence.

As J.R.R. Tolkien said, “Not all those who wander are lost.” I know that enrolling in The Canada-Japan Co-op Program and “wandering” to Japan

totally changed my life in an unexpected way. I urge any students who are open-minded and looking for a challenge to apply to this program.

フィービー　リュー2009年卒業生　サイモンフレイザー大学　電子工学㈱国際電気通信基礎技術研究所にて研修

卒業後に何がしたいか決めかねていたサイモンフレイザー大学エンジニアリング科学の最終学期、日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP）を知りました。そして、海外での研修経験を得て、違ったものの見方を探る絶好の機会だと思いました。早速、CJCPに応募し、㈱国際電気通信基礎技術研究所（ATR）の知能ロボティクス研究所での研修機会を得ました。2009年の夏、関西へ旅立ちましたが、この研修が私のそれからの人生を変えることになるとは全く考えていませんでした。

研修では、様々な研修プロジェクトでソフトウェアの開発に関わりました。研究所のチーム、各々のプロジェクトを知るにつれ、ロボット工学の多様さを実感しました。それは、専攻が異なる人達がそれぞれの専門分野で貢献し、より良いロボット製作に携わっているということでした。この研究は、ロボットがもたらす現実社会での倫理的な影響、ロボットの外観によって私達との交流や関係のあり方がどのように影響されるか、また、より社会的に適切と思われるロボット行動のアルゴリズムなどを探求するものかもしれません。

研修が終わってからも、ロボット－多くの人が関わり、私たちの日常に関わりを持つダイナミックな分野で研究を続けたいと思っている自分に気付きました。ATRは、大阪大学と強いつながりを持っていることもあって、2011年秋、大阪大学の石黒浩教授の研究所の大学院生に受け入れられました。

大学院課程を修了し、現在は、博士課程に在籍しています。博士課程の学生として、ATRでパートタイムで働きながら自分の研究もしています。私の研究は、人間の相互交流を捕らえたセンサーデーターのみから、ロボットが話したり動いたり、交流したりすることを自動的に学習するようデータ駆動型のアプローチを用いたものです。今日のビッグ･データやクラウドサービスの傾向、ロボットは現実により多く使われていることもあり、私の研究が、ロボットの学習能力向上、社会的知性の元で振舞うようになるのに貢献することと願っています。

ジョン･ロナルド･ロウエル･トールキンが「さまよっている人達が皆、人生の目的を失っているとは限らない」と言ったように、CJCPに参加し、予想もしなかった方向に私の人生がさまよったかもしれません。ですが、物事に柔軟で、チャレンジを求める学生に、CJCPの参加を勧めます。

Safaa Najim

“Congratulations! Safaa, you have been chosen for the CJCP work

term,” were the congratulatory words I received from Ms. Yuko Nemoto.

Applying to CJCP was a gamble I took without thinking I would succeed.

And yet it was with pride that I represented both CJCP and my program,

the John Molson School of Business at Concordia University, as the fi rst

business student to do an internship in Japan. This pride and sense of

responsibility are what fuelled my days here in the land of the Rising Sun.

At fi rst, I was extremely nervous knowing that I would be out of my

comfort zone in a country where I didn’t speak the language. However,

I was also fi nally accomplishing my dream of travelling to Japan, a

dream I’ve had for many years. Since childhood, I have been intrigued by

Japan’s written and unwritten rules, beautiful landscapes, amazing food

and, most importantly, its amazing people.

I found myself a gold mine by working at J. Morita Manufacturing

Corporation. As a student in international business, I had a keen interest

in discovering how diff erent countries conduct business, and working

at J. Morita was a stepping stone to deepening my knowledge. I took

part in several projects that allowed me to contact overseas branches

and partners, making it a great opportunity for me to demonstrate my

language skills. My team helped me practice my Japanese, overcoming

the language barrier. I also acquired new skills in areas such as public

speaking, giving presentations, website editing and creating documents.

My co-workers were of great help both during and outside work and

were always ready to give me a hand whenever I was faced with a

diffi cult situation. I was able to fi t in quickly, feeling welcomed and

treated like a family member. The company off ered me many chances

to get to know the team better outside of work, and I was happy to join

their tennis team as well.

It has been great to share this wonderful and unforgettable

experience and adventure with other students, motivating them to put

their worries aside and jump into the unknown. We can never know

what our future holds unless we run towards it.

サファ　ナジムコンコルディア大学　ビジネスアドミニストレーション2016年1月～8月　株式会社モリタ製作所にて研修 ｢サファ、おめでとう!　日本での研修に選ばれました｣　CJCPプログラムアシスタントの根本優子さんからお祝いの言葉が届きました。CJCPに参加申し込みをすることは、選ばれるとは全く思わずに応募した私の｢賭け｣でした。しかし、私の在籍大学であるコンコルディア大学のJohn Molson School of Businessから初めてCJCPのインターンシップに参加するという誇りを持って臨みました。異国の地、日本での研修に私を突き動かしたのは、このプライドと責任感です。

当初、住み慣れた自国を離れ、言葉も話せない外国での生活にとても不安でしたが、日本へ行くという何年も思い続けてきた私の夢がついに叶ったのです。子供の頃から、日本の明文化されたルールや暗黙の了解、美しい景観、素晴らしい食べ物、そして何よりも、日本人に憧れていました。

モリタ製作所での研修は、何ものにも変えがたい経験でした。国際ビジネスを学ぶ学生として、海外でのビジネスの仕方に強い関心があったので、モリタ製作所で研修は、その知識を深める足がかりとなりました。研修期間中、いくつかのプロジェクトに関わり、海外の支社、関連会社に連絡を取るなど、私の語学力を試す絶好の機会でもありました。研修先のチームの皆さんは、言葉の壁を克服するよう、私の日本語学習の手助けをして下さいました。私も、パブリックスピーキング、プレゼンテーション、ウェブサイトデザイン、文書作成などの新しいスキルも身に付けることができました。同僚は、仕事以外でも、何か困難な場面に直面した時など、いつでも手助けをして下さいました。来日後すぐに新しい環境に溶け込めるように、温かく迎えられ、まるで家族のように接していただきました。受け入れ先の方々をよりよく知る機会がいくつも設けられ、また、会社のテニス部に入れたのはとても嬉しかったです。

この有意義で、決して忘れることがない私の経験を、他の学生と共有することで、未知の世界に飛び込む不安を取り除くことに力を貸せれば、とてもうれしく思います。将来に向かっていかない限り、私たちの先に何があるか分からないのですから。

Austin Froese

The thing about accepting a job in a foreign country, one whose

culture and language you don’t understand, is that you never really know

what to expect. Would I want to leave the month I arrived or would I be

begging to stay when I had to depart? I’m happy to say that it was the

latter and that I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.

During my year with Azbil, I worked on a variety of projects

and experiments, including laser welding implementation and the

automation of production line components. Thankfully, my work was

not limited to one or two tasks day in and day out; rather, I was given

the freedom to implement my design ideas in a number of diff erent

situations. What made my position even better were the amazing co-

workers I had the privilege of working with. They went out of their way

to make my transition from Canada to Japan as smooth as possible and

challenged me to improve my Japanese and my communication and

problem-solving skills.

Having a work-life balance is important, and I took advantage of the

time outside of work to experience new things, explore new places and

meet new people. That being said, I took a slightly diff erent approach

than many. Instead of treating my internship as an extended vacation

with an income, I decided to act like I was moving here indefi nitely

and did the things I would do back home. With this mindset, I joined

a church, volunteered weekly in various capacities and participated

in tournaments, among other things. It was the people I met and the

experiences I had through these activities that truly made my time in

Japan one that I will not soon forget.

オースティン　フリーズカルガリー大学　機械工学2015年6月～2016年5月　アズビル株式会社にて研修 言葉や文化を知らない外国での仕事のオファーを受けるということは、何が起こるか予想ができません。到着してすぐに帰りたくなるか、帰国しなくてはいけない時に、もう少し滞在したいとお願いするか?　私の場合は、後者であり、日本での経験は何物にも代えがたいものだったと言えます。

アズビル株式会社での研修は、レーザー溶接プロセス開発、生産ライン改善などの様々なプロジェクトに関わりました。ありがたいことに、私の研修は、一つ、二つの業務に限らず、どちらかと言えば、あらゆる状況におけるデザインのアイデアを提案する機会が得られました。それよりも、素晴らしい同僚と一緒に仕事ができたことがこの研修の有意義な点だったと思います。カナダから日本への環境変化が上手くいくように、そして、日本語スキル、コミュニケーション、問題解決能力が上達するように、私の意欲をかきたてて下さいました。

仕事とプライベートのバランスを保つことはとても大切だと考え、仕事以外では、新しい事に挑戦し、新しい場所を訪れ、知らない人と出会うよう心がけていました。私は、人とは違ったアプローチを取りました。日本での研修を手当がある長期の休暇の延長ではなく、無期限で引越してきたかのように考え、カナダに戻ってからもできることをしようと決めました。それからは、教会に行き、週ごとに多様なボランティア活動をし、その他の活動なのかで、バトミントンのトーナメントにも参加しました。私がそれらの活動を通して出会った人や経験が、まさに私の日本滞在を忘れがたいものにしたと言えます。

This past year, thanks to The Canada Japan Co-op Program,

I worked in Japan for four months, which was a once-in-a-lifetime

experience I will cherish forever. This program has many strengths,

some of the greatest being the network it helps you build with other

like-minded students and the opportunity to build a strong global

communication foundation, which is essential in today's world.

At JFE Steel I assisted in research using phased array ultrasonic

testing to detect defects in steel pipes. Along with learning about

this advanced technology, I conducted research in a real-world

setting, explored my interests and some potential career paths, and

gained valuable cultural experiences through my co-workers.

Although I am just beginning my career, I believe that my

experiences in Japan will shape my future and I will use the skills that

I learned in those much too short four months for years to come. I

greatly appreciate my time in Japan and defi nitely plan to go back as

soon as I can.

バハア　ヘイダリブリティッシュコロンビア大学　電気工学2015年5月～8月　JFE スチール株式会社 日本での4ヶ月間に渡る研修というまたとない機会を得たことは、今年の忘れられない思い出になりました。日加コー･オプ･プログラム（CJCP）に感謝しています。CJCPの強みは、同じ志を持つ学生とのネットワーク作り、今日の社会において、必要とされる世界に通用するコミュニケーションの基礎作りの一端を担っていることです。

研修先のJFEスチールでは、パイプライン検査のフェーズドアレイに関する研究に関わりました。この高度な技術を学習しながら、実世界での研究に関わったり、関心がある分野の探求と、私の将来のキャリアついて考えたり、同僚から貴重な日本文化体験が得られたりしました。

私のキャリアは始まったばかりですが、日本での経験は、私の将来の方向付けをし、4ヶ月という本当に短期間で学んだスキルが活かされる事と思います。日本での経験に心から感謝し、できるだけ早く再来日したいと願っています。

As an international student from Hong Kong, being part of The Canada-

Japan Co-op Program was a great opportunity to represent my Canadian

university while working as an internship student in Japan. The experience

was priceless and benefi cial to my future academic and career learnings

and practices. I had the privilege of working at one of the world’s largest

gas companies, Osaka Gas, in their Energy Technology Laboratories

department. I was required to fully use my knowledge, skills and creativity

to resolve various problems and accomplish multiple projects – bringing

together all that I have learned in past years. Beyond that, by joining The

Canada-Japan Co-op Program, I had the opportunity to make connections

with many fascinating and talented people from around the world.

As an internship student for Osaka Gas, I am very thankful that I could

work with a wonderful and passionate team in the Delicious and Healthy

Cooking Science Laboratory. The dynamics between the members were

always very interactive and encouraging. I have defi nitely improved my

technical and interpersonal skills by working closely with them. I also

developed a close relationship with my team members, who invited my

family on a laboratory tour when they came to visit me during the work

term.

I was very proud to be invited to present my internship experience

to a group of co-op co-ordinators from Canadian universities, including

Jenny and Yuko from The Canada-Japan Co-op Program. Aside from the

presentation, I had the privilege to attend the WACE World Conference

as a panellist. This conference promotes co-operative and work-integrated

education for students around the world. It was a very special opportunity

to share my internship experience with co-ordinators from diff erent

countries, and I hope my sharing will motivate them to continue helping

students go abroad for internship experiences.

In the end, I must convey my gratitude to The Canada-Japan Co-op

Program for granting me an eye-opening and remarkable internship

experience. I hope more students will be able to receive this privilege and

work abroad in Japan in the future.

私の研修経験をCJCPのプログラムスタッフ以外の参加大学のコーディネーターの前で話す機会が持てました。更に、2015年夏に京都産業大学で開催されたWACE カンファレンスのパネリストとしても参加する機会にも恵まれました。このカンファレンスは、　世界中にコー･オプ教育、産学連携教育の普及を目指しています。このようなカンファレンスで、海外からのコー･オプ教育のコーディネーターと私の日本での研修経験を共有できる特別な場となりました。私の経験を話すことで、海外での研修を目指す学生への手助けとなることを希望しています。

最後になりますが、この目を見張るような、素晴らしい研修経験の機会を私に与えてくれた日加コー･オプ･プログラムに心から感謝しています。これからもより多くの学生が日本での研修機会が得られることを願っています。
