SPEAKERSSophie Scott Rare Cancers Australia is thrilled to have Sophie as the MC for the 2015 Sick or Treat Sessions as well as the facilitator for our Q&A panel. Sophie is the national medical reporter for the ABC and has won numerous awards for excellence in medical and health journalism. Sophie’s reports appear on the ABC news, Lateline, and 7:30. She hosts the Health Quarter on ABC News 24 and is a frequent guest on Richard Glover’s 702 Drive.

John Cannings OAM is the National Markets Leader for Health, Health Consulting Leader for Australia and PwC’s Pharma & Life Sciences Leader for the AsiaPac. John Cannings is an experienced and well known corporate and commercial lawyer with extensive health and pharmaceutical industry knowledge. He specialises in corporate and securities law, governance, and board advice, particularly in the Health and Pharmaceutical sectors.

Dr Nick Chapman has extensive experience in health policy, specialising in innovation and neglected disease policy since 2010. In his role with Policy Cures, Nick has managed projects for governments, major philanthropic organisations and public-private partnerships. His experience includes work on research tracking, strategy development, funding gap analysis and innovative financing mechanisms.

Dr Sally Crossing AM has been involved in the Australian cancer consumer movement since 1997 and has had breast cancer since 1995. She founded and chaired the Breast Cancer Action Group from 1997 and Cancer Voices from 2000. In 2010 Sally established Health Consumers NSW, the peak body for that state. Most recently she convened the new Australian Cancer Consumer Network, which offers a unified voice for cancer consumer related groups within the Network.

Dr Simon Fifer is the Manager for Research Development at the Institute for Choice, University of South Australia. Eight years’ experience as a consultant in the market research industry allows Simon to present the technical aspects of choice research in an industry friendly manner. Part of the management team for executive training, he has presented at various national and international conferences and has published papers in leading academic journals.

Prof Ian Frazer AC is a clinician scientist, trained as a clinical immunologist. As a professor at the University of QLD, he leads a research group working at TRI in Brisbane on the immunobiology of epithelial cancers. He is recognised as co-inventor of the technology enabling the HPV vaccines, currently used worldwide to help prevent cervical cancer. He is currently the President of the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences. He was recognised as Australian of the Year in 2006.

Dr Masum Hossain is the Asia-Pacific Regional President for Pfizer Oncology responsible for the commercial and medical operation for the region. He is the founding member and Co-Chair of the Cancer Drugs Alliance in Australia. Previously General Manager for Pfizer Oncology in Australia, New Zealand and Korea, Masum has over 19 years of combined clinical, regulatory and pharmaceutical industry experience. He is a medical doctor with a special interest in clinical epidemiology and drug development.

Dr Wendy Lipworth is a medically trained bioethicist and qualitative social researcher and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Values, Ethics and the Law in Medicine, University of Sydney. Her program of research focuses on the ethics and politics of “biomedical innovation” and is based on the view that controversies and concerns about biomedical innovation are about values and politics.

Prof Graham Mann is Co-Director of the Centre for Cancer Research, Westmead Millennium Institute and Research Director of the Melanoma Institute Australia, in Sydney Medical School. He leads a translational research program on melanoma with the support of NHMRC, Cancer Institute NSW and Cancer Council NSW. He is Chair of the University of Sydney Cancer Research Network, and a member of the Scientific Steering Committee of the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC).

Mike Parker is an industry expert in IT licensing. He has worked for Microsoft for 19 years, the past 9 in the Worldwide Licensing and Pricing group which is responsible for orchestrating the business groups, business segments and field sales teams in the global development and implementation of licensing business models. Based in Melbourne, Mike has responsibility across APAC and India for incubation licensing initiatives.

Stefanie Spiers is the Oncology Corporate & Government Affairs Manager at Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Having worked in the industry for more than 20 years she is passionate about driving improved patient access to innovative therapies. Stefanie’s work brings together her knowledge of the industry and its products with a background in journalism and marketing.

Christian Sellars has worked at MSD for over 15 years and held a number of commercial and market access roles in Australia and the Asia Pacific. He worked previously in the government and trade union sector in South Africa. He holds a Masters Degree in economics from the University of Cape Town and an MBA from the Australian Graduate School of Management

Prof David Thomas is an NHMRC Senior Research Fellow, and a medical oncologist specialising in sarcomas. He has recently been appointed as Director of the Kinghorn Cancer Centre and Head of Cancer Division at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, Sydney. Prof Thomas has a particular focus on the impact of genomics on cancer medicine.

Richard Vines along with partner Kate co-founded RCA in June 2012 and in the ensuing 3 years have established the organisation as a key participant in the broader cancer community. Prior to this, Richard has worked in the IT industry and in a number of not for profits associated with retail, politics and health.
