JACKSON PUBLIC SCHOOL DISTRICT, Jackson, Mississippi (2007-2010)Classroom Addition, McLeod Elementary School

Actual Cost: $2,161,273Architect of Record - Ramos Rosser Architects, PA

The project objective was to add 8 new classrooms adjacent to the existing school, replacing the unsightly portable buildings. The area for the newaddition is to the east of and adjacent to the existing classroom wing that runs east-west, itself a 1963 addition. The new addition consists of a double-loaded corridor with a row of four classrooms on each side with the restroom facilities at the north end, close to the existing classroom wing. Withaa tight, no-frills budget, the small 10,000 + square-foot addition was designed to facilitate maintenance: the floors are patterned stained concrete;walls are colored concrete block; a partially covered ceiling grid exposes round HVAC ductwork and other infrastructure. Controlled naturaldaylighting is assisted with dimmable lighting throughout the day.
