2010 MTL Review Recommendations

Recommendations that will be implemented in the

2015 Primary MTL curriculum are:

• Strengthening the teaching & learning of interaction

skills;

• A more systematic teaching of oral vocabulary &

sentence structures; and

• Greater use of information & communication

technology (ICT) in teaching & learning of MTLs.

Features of the 2015 Primary School

MTL curriculum

• Greater emphasis on spoken & written

interaction skills;

• Greater focus on authentic activities to

better engage students and develop their

communication skills; and

• Continue to expose students to culture &

values through MTL learning.

Features of the 2015 Primary School

MTL curriculum

• Story characters set in real-life situations that

students can relate to, so as to better engage

students in their learning of MTL and;

• Greater use of ICT e.g. videos, animations, digital

interactive games etc.

Continued Focus on Language Skills

• Greater use of authentic language activities to

better develop our students’ communication skills;

• Encourage language use in its various forms; and

• Development of other language skills remain

important.

RReeaaddiinngg && WWrriittiinngg Upon building strong foundation in listening and speaking, your child will venture into reading and writing, starting with the recognition and writing of characters.

HHaannyyuu PPiinnyyiinn Building on your child’s oracy foundation, Hanyu Pinyin is introduced as a tool for learning Chinese. Your child will be able to use this tool as an aid in understanding and making connections between the sounds and meanings of Chinese characters.

LLiisstteenniinngg && SSppeeaakkiinngg Other than the textbook, your child will also learn Chinese through big books and animations. Language activities such as situational dialogues and role-playing will help your child learn how to interact in Chinese. Development of oracy skills will lay a strong foundation for character recognition and reading.
