TOGETHER ON THE WATEREARLY YEARS While working on this catalogue I started reminiscing about my early years as an outrigger paddler. It was a time when everyone used wood paddles, when we paddled six-man from April through October and winter paddling was for surf ski racing (open ocean OC-1s had not yet been invented). In 1990 boat builder John Martin modified a surfski, built an ama and 'iakos and introduced the first OC-1 that was designed to venture out into open ocean and surf. Those were fun times on Oahu, testing out reconverted surf skis, using “rubbers” to lash our wood 'iakos to the canoe, and exploring the ocean on this new style of outrigger canoe.

PADDLE EVOLUTION As outrigger canoes were evolving so too were the paddles, and KIALOA was at the forefront of this paddle evolution. In the early 90’s Dave could be found tucked away in his shop shaping and reshaping wood paddles, and then out on the water with teammates testing out new designs. Ten years later he invented the Hybrid Canoe paddle which was quickly adopted as the sport’s standard in competitive racing. Fast forward to the present and you see KIALOA offering a myriad of paddle shapes, designs and materials to address the varied needs of paddlers, canoes, and water conditions. THE NEW KIALOA K GRAPHIC This year we are excited to introduce a new version of the KIALOA logo to add to our existing collection. Inspiration for the new mark was taken from several sources. The vertical leg of the “K” incorporates the tapa element from our original logo and the diagonal pieces were inspired by the spears on the Kanaka Maoli flag, outrigger canoe hulls, surfboards and ti leaves. All of our paddles for 2015 embrace this new mark and you will also find it to be the major influence for our new apparel line.

'A– INA We have chosen the name 'A-ina to represent our 2015 graphic. The word 'A-ina is a powerful and expansive word that encompasses more than its simple translation of “land” or “earth.” It also means “that which feeds.” At KIALOA we live the value of Ma-lama 'A-ina and this is reflected in the way we develop products, in our business practices, and in our beliefs about sustainability. Blades on all Hybrid paddles have a 3K carbon skin with a foam and wood core to comply with HCRA racing rules. KIALOA SHAFT TECHNOLOGIES We offer a variety of shafts, using varied materials, shape and sizes. Here is an overview of our shaft offerings:

TRADITIONAL DOUBLE BEND WOOD SHAFTHand shaped, oval, tapered, triple laminated wood shaft. We use this type of shaft in both steering paddles and paddling paddles. Steering paddle shafts come with a stronger wood layup and a slightly larger circumference.

MEKANA NEW FOR 2015DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR WOMEN, the blade of the Mekana is compact at the bottom for a big catch with a refined shoulder area for a clean, quick and light release. The Slim Sweeping Doublebend Shaft™ is narrower both front to back and side to side. We kicked out the angle on the double bend to 16 ½ degrees after watching extensive videos of women paddling. This added angle allows the paddle to stay in the perpendicular position longer while in the water. HOKU NEW FOR 2015Designed without limits the Hoku was introduced in 2014 as a double bend carbon paddle developed for racing in unlimited canoes. The larger blade surface area with all of its features, coupled with the lightweight double bend carbon shaft matched up well with these boats. The feedback from paddlers, “We love it but we also need a Hybrid version.” We heard you and now offer the choice of either a Single Bend or Double Bend Hoku hybrid featuring our new Slim Shaft™ and our new Ergo-T2™.

He’s a mentor, a coach and he’s blind. “When sight is removed from the equation you can listen to what the boat and the ocean are telling you. KALOKalo, or Taro as it is known in Hawaii, has been a staple food in the Hawaiian diet from earliest times to present. The Kalo plant is not only utilitarian (all parts of the plant are eaten), but it also embodies the Hawaiian value of Ohana – a word that is derived from 'oha, the offshoot from a parent taro plant. Warranty: KIALOA products have a one-year warranty from date of purchase against defects in materials and craftsmanship. If you experience any problems with a KIALOA product, return it to your authorized dealer, or contact KIALOA directly. Proof of purchase is required. Defective paddles will be repaired or replaced at the discretion of KIALOA. Damage due to wear and tear or misuse can be repaired at a reasonable charge.
