COACHING STAFFLAUREN SCOTT

Lauren Scott enters her third season

as head lacrosse coach at Meredith

College. Under Scott’s leadership the

young program made an immediate

impact in the conference and region.

With a conference record of 7-1,

the Avenging Angels finished the

2014 season in second place and

captured the USA South Tournament

Championship. Meredith earned the

league’s automatic bid to the NCAA

Division III Tournament.

Midfielder Katie Burnet collected Player of the Year honors and was

named the tournament Most Valuable Player. Burnet also earned the

program’s first All-Region nod and set two new USA South records.

In the program’s first year in 2012, Meredith earned a bid to the con-

ference tournament with a fifth-place finish. Burnet collected Rookie

of the Year honors and four Avenging Angels received All-Conference

accolades.

Scott hails from Danbury (Conn.) High School where she served as

the girl’s varsity lacrosse coach from 2004-12. In just five seasons,

Scott took the lacrosse program from a season record of 2-14 in 2003

to boast a Division II State Championship title in 2008.

In addition to her tenure at Danbury, Scott also served as a Connecti-

cut Lightning premier coach for two seasons and as a volunteer assis-

tant at her alma mater, Western Connecticut State University in 2004.

An advocate for the sport of lacrosse and as outreach to her commu-

nity, Scott served seven years as the girl’s director of Nutmeg Sports

“West” for girl’s lacrosse. In addition, she originated and directed

Community Lacrosse, a self-run and organized lacrosse camp for the

greater-Danbury area.

Scott lettered four seasons of women’s lacrosse for Western Connect-

icut State. During her career with the Colonials, she played multiple

positions and set school records in scoring, ground balls, caused

turnovers and points. She earned all-conference accolades three

times while with Western and turned in Little East Conference Player

of the Week honors twice.

Scott earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Western

Connecticut State and also holds a teaching certificate and minor in

Exercise Science from Southern Connecticut State University.

WEATHERSPOON GYMNASIUMThe home to Meredith’s basketball and volleyball teams. The facility

provides up-close seating for over 500 spectators. The complex also

includes locker rooms, athletics offices, a training room, a fitness

center, a 5,000 square-foot dance studio and a six-lane, indoor

swimming pool.

MEREDITH ATHLETIC FIELD AND TRACK COMPLEXThe home to Meredith’s soccer, cross country and lacrosse teams.

Meredith’s newest varsity sport of track and field will begin competition

in spring 2016. The complex includes a lighted competition level track,

a FieldTurf artificial playing surface capable of supporting soccer and

lacrosse games and a storage facility. Future phases of the project will

include a grandstand, hospitality areas, support facilities, restrooms,

brick arcade and locker rooms. The cross country team uses the

complex as well as the College’s 225-acre campus and the Reedy

Creek Greenway.

MEREDITH SOFTBALL COMPLEXThe home of Meredith softball has recently undergone several

renovations. The addition of irrigation to the Bermuda field and

infield improvements have stepped up the playing conditions to

make it one of the best fields in the area. Dugouts improved

comfort for the players, and a new backstop will enhance the

game atmosphere and improve spectator safety.

MEREDITH TENNIS COMPLEXThe home of the Meredith tennis program includes six lighted tennis

courts. The courts, which were recently repaired and resurfaced, bear a

“US Open Blue” inner court surrounded by a green outer court. This new

scheme helps to heighten the visibility of the ball for players and fans.

MEREDITH COLLEGE ATHLETICS PROGRAM

ATHLETIC FACILITIES

THE DIVISION III EXPERIENCE

Meredith athletics teams participate in Division III of the National

Collegiate Athletic Association. Division III athletics offers student-

athletes the opportunity to become well-rounded individuals who

successfully integrate athletics and academics while experiencing

all aspects of college life. Student-athletes who compete at this level

can receive academic and need-based financial assistance. The

athletic department is staffed and funded like any other department in

the College.

ACADEMICS

Meredith College’s commitment to academics is exemplified by

its athletics teams. Each year, the USA South Athletic Conference

recognizes its student-athletes’ hard work in the classroom by naming

an Academic All-Conference team. In 2014, 60 Meredith students were

named to the team. The Meredith athletics program further recognizes

student-athletes who earn a 3.5 cumulative GPA as members of the

Athletics Director’s Club and those who earn a perfect 4.0 GPA with

the Vice-President’s Scholar-Athlete Award.

MEDICAL SERVICES

The athletic training staff provides excellent care for student-athletes.

The athletic training support staff consists of head athletic trainer,

Sharon Malley, and Assistant Athletic Trainer Heidi Roach. Dr. Doug

Martini of Cary Orthopedic serves as the program’s team physician. In

addition, Meredith College serves as a clinical site for the UNC-Chapel

Hill Undergraduate Athletic Training Program. Services and equipment

provided include a whirlpool, hydrocollator, ultrasound, injury ice and

electrical stimulation.

COMMUNITY SERVICE

Members from each team are elected to the Student Athlete Advisory

Committee that organizes support for each sport and also coordinates

community service. Past volunteer work includes Special Olympics

of Wake County, Habitat for Humanity, Service Raleigh, and the USA

South Athletic Conference’s Cans Across the Conference and Pennies

for a Purpose.
