Ashland City serves as the county seat ofCheatham County.

The town, which was incorporated on Dec.3, 1859, is located along the scenic Cumber-land River.

Ashland City, which is home to 4,541 people, is a cen-ter of industrial growth with A.O. Smith Water Products,the world’s largest manufacturer of water heaters, andTrinity Marine, which has a booming barge buildingplant.

Ashland City is home to the Cumberland River Bicen-tennial Trail, which attracts people from all over MiddleTennessee and offers an eight-mile trail for biking, walk-ing or running.

In addition, the town sponsors Summerfest each Juneat Riverbluff Park.

Riverbluff Park also hosts many community eventseach year and is home to the Cheatham County SoccerAssociation.

The Ashland City Council is made up of mayor RickJohnson, vice mayor Steve Allen and council membersLisa Walker, Jimmy Gill, Roger Jackson, Alwilda Binkleyand Chris LaCrosse.

Kingston Springs is a picturesque small townlocated 20 miles west of downtown Nashvilleon Interstate 40.

Before the advent of the automobile Kings-ton Springs was a famous resort spot, featuring

mineral springs which produced white, black and redsulphur water.

A large inn or tavern was built in 1819 nearthe springs to serve overnight visitors takingadvantage of their healing qualities.

Kingston Springs was incorporated in 1965and is celebrating its 50th year of incorporationthis fall.

The town is home to 2,756 residents and avariety of businesses and restaurants.

Community events, such as Art in the Parkand the Catfish Rodeo, are plentiful and offermany opportunities to meet new neighbors.

The town is headed by mayor Tony Gross,vice mayor Bob Stohler and commissioners GaryCorlew, Gordon Lampley and Glenn Remick.

A full-time city manager, Mike McClanahan,oversees the town’s daily operations.

The Kingston Springs CityCommission meets the thirdThursday of each month at 7 p.m.at the Audrey Beck Meeting Hall.Elections are held every two yearsin November. The four-year termsof the five at-largecommissioners are staggered. Established in 1972, Pegram is considered a“community of neighbors.”

The town, located in South Cheatham Coun-ty, is governed by a five-member Board of May-or and Aldermen, which is led by mayor

Charles Morehead, vice mayor Bill Herbert and aldermenAubrey Chambers, Warren Miller and Bob Sanders.

The town boasts a population of 2,093.Pegram has a city park, where many ofthe town’s larger events are held, in-

cluding an Independence Day cele-bration and Christmas in the Park.

In the early days, Pegram centeredaround the railroad with a depotbeing built around 1860. Today, thedepot is still there and is used as acommunity club, which hosts a fishfry in March and barbecue in July.

The railway is still in operation forfreight traffic.

The Pleasant View Board of Mayorand Aldermen meet twice amonth. A workshop is held thefourth Tuesday of the month at 7p.m. The regular meeting is heldthe second Tuesday of the monthat 7 p.m. Both meetings are heldat City Hall. Elections are heldevery two years in November, withaldermen terms being staggered.The terms for mayor andaldermen are four years. The nextelection is in November 2016.Voters will elect a mayor and twoaldermen at that time.

Pleasant View is located halfway between Nash-ville and Clarksville on Interstate 24.

The town, which is home to 4,149 people, isgoverned by a five-member Board of Mayor andAldermen, made up of mayor Perry Keenan, vice

mayor Danny Rediker and aldermen Randell Bracey,Bruce Drake and George Leasure.

Pleasant View was formerly known as Bradley’sStand and Turnbull Horse Stamp. The mail andtelegraph lines ran from Clarksville to Nashvilleand Pleasant View served as a stagecoach stopand rest area between the two cities.

The town was incorporated in 1921, but unin-corporated 10 years later. Residents voted in Au-

gust 1996 to re-incorporate.The small-town community feel, combined with

all the conveniences of the big city make the town apleasant place to live, work, play and grow.

Among other events, the town hosts Cruise'n NGroove'n on the third Friday of each month from May toOctober on Main Street.

county was founded on Feb. 28,1856, and is named for EdwardSaunders Cheatham, who was a

CHEATHAM COUNTY COMMISSION

The 12 members of the Cheatham County Commissionare elected by county residents every four years in August.Two representatives are elected from each of the sixdistricts. The next election is in August 2018.

The commission meeting is held the third Monday ofthe month at 7 p.m. in the General Sessions Courtroom.The meeting is open to the public.

Permits generally cover24 hours. For weekend burn-ing, a permit can be ob-

Permits will be issued ifweather conditions are con-sidered safe for debris burn-ing activity. Permit holdersshould also check for localrestrictions as some coun-ties and municipalities havetheir own regulations.

Cheatham County residents must either contractwith a private waste hauler or take their garbage to oneof five convenience centers located throughout thecounty.

To use any center you must have a Cheatham Countywheel tax sticker on your vehicle or have proof thatyou own property in the county usually in the form of aproperty tax statement.

In addition, loads must be secured in a way such thatnothing will blow or fall out of your vehicle causing alitter or safety problem.

All the convenience centers accept household trash.Three of the centers, Ashland City, Pleasant View andSams Creek, offer single-stream recycling.

A new self-service kiosk isnow available in the office, which is located in the Tucker EmpsonCounty Office Building in Ashland City. County Clerk Teresa Gupton(pictured) said residents must bring their renewal form from theTennessee Department of Revenue with them when using the kiosk.Residents must scan a barcode from the renewal form for the processto begin. In addition, Gupton said only credit cards can be used forpayment using the kiosk. Gupton said the whole process takes under15 seconds.

The Ashland City Farmers Market is currently located on NorthMain Street across from the Ashland City First Baptist Church.

But the market will move to a new permanent open-air structurein the summer of 2015 at Riverbluff Park off the Tennessee WaltzParkway in Ashland City.

Officials have been working on the new market for years, and theCheatham County Chamber of Commerce secured two grants tohelp fund the project.

Saturday is usually the day with the most vendors, but the mar-ket is open daily during the season, which is usually from springuntil late summer.

The season fee for vendors is $25.Vendor applications are available on the city's website at

www.ashlandcitytn.gov and the Cheatham County Chamber of Com-merce website at www.cheathamchamber.org.

The Cheatham County Fair is held each August and in-cludes rides, food, pageants, agricultural demonstrations,demolition derbies, talent shows and mule pulls.

Property was donated in 1947 to form a fair association forthe betterment and good of the community and farmers alike.The property is located on Fairgrounds Road in Ashland City.

The Cheatham County Fair Association has made a numberof improvements over the past several years, and the boardhas grown with people that deeply care about the community.

Relay for Life is the AmericanCancer Society’s signature eventthat offers everyone in the com-munity a chance to participate inthe fight against cancer.

During the event, teams ofindividuals gather and take turnswalking around a track for 12hours.

The Cheatham County eventis usually held in May at Ri-verbluff Park off the TennesseeWaltz Parkway in Ashland City.

Teams do most of their fund-raising prior to the event, butsome teams also hold creativefundraisers at their campsitesduring Relay.

The Relay event features anumber of fun activities, in-cluding games, live music andcontests.

There is also a luminariaceremony that takes place aftersundown, honoring cancer survi-vors and remembering thoselost to the disease.

Relay money also goes tofund research and grants forcancer as well as a camp forchildren who have cancer. Thecamp is called Camp Horizonand is in Kingston Springs.

The Cheatham County Historicaland Genealogical Associationassists with the CheathamCounty Museum, which islocated in the lower level of theCheatham County Public Libraryin Ashland City. A number ofhistorical items are on display atthe museum.

The Cheatham County Historical andGenealogical Association was organized inApril 1994.

The aim of the non-profit organization isto instill a sense of pride in the communi-ties of Cheatham County, and to pursuefamily histories to benefit future genera-tions, present members, all communitiesand citizens of Cheatham County.

CCHGA has accomplished much sinceits formation, including the rescue andorganization of old county records thatwere in the attic of the County Courthouseand the library basement; creation of anofficial Cheatham County flag; the erectionof historical markers on the County Court-house lawn and throughout the county; andthe publication in 2001 of the “CheathamCounty, Tennessee History and Families.”

CCHGA members continue to assistwith the Cheatham County Museum, whichis located with the CCHGA office in thelower level of the Cheatham County PublicLibrary.

CCHGA also partners with the Cheath-am County Public Library during its fall

festival.Future goals of CCHGA include educa-

tional outreach, assisting with county ar-chives, additional historical sites, cleaningcemeteries and more genealogical studies.

Everyone is invited to attend businessand program meetings.

CCHGA business meetings are held thesecond Thursday of each month at 6:30p.m. through November. There is no meet-ing in December. The meetings start at6:30 p.m. at the Cheatham County PublicLibrary. Special programs are held everythree months with guests making presenta-tions.

The floods of 2010 hitCheatham County hard.

When dedicated Habi-tat volunteers from theDickson Habitat teamedup with the CheathamLong Term Recovery com-mittee to help, the commu-nity realized that there wasa need for a permanentHabitat presence inCheatham County.

In December of thatyear, the Cheatham Divi-sion of Habitat for Human-ity officially opened, bring-ing the opportunity forlow-income families topurchase quality, afford-able homes.

Cheatham Habitat hasnow built four homes inthe county, with the latestone being completed inJune 2015.

Habitat homeownersearn their zero percentinterest mortgage rate byattending homeownershipclasses and working onthe build site.

The CheathamCounty Soil Conserva-tion District has part-nered with NaturalResource Conserva-tion Service since1944 in implementingconservation prac-tices in CheathamCounty includingfencing, livestockwatering facilities,erosion control struc-tures, waterways,stream bank stabiliza-tion, critical areas,cover crops, nutrientmanagement, etc.

The SCD providestechnical and finan-cial assistance toimplement conserva-tion practices to pro-tect natural resourcesand educational op-portunities.

The Senior Center at Ashland City offers a variety of activ-ities, including quilting, bingo, exercise classes, sewing class-es, crafts, dominoes, canasta, bunco, health screenings, picnics,community jams and much more.

Seniors enjoy field trips to such places as Metropolis, Ill.,and other popular places in the Middle Tennessee area andeven across the country.

A dance is held every Friday at 7 p.m., and seniors also en-joy the annual New Year’s Eve dance on Dec. 31.

A Senior Service Day is held in May and features vendorbooths, food, door prizes and demonstrations. Seniors and theirfamily members and/or caregivers are welcome to attend. InJune, hundreds of seniors attend the annual picnic.

The center is funded by the town of Ashland City, GreaterNashville Regional Council, Area Agency on Aging and Disabil-ity, United Way of Cheatham County and donations.

Cheatham County has arich agricultural heritageand generates nearly $14million annually in net farmincome.

Our farm families pro-duce tobacco, livestock, hay,row crops (corn and soy-beans) and small-scalefruits and vegetables.

The county currentlyranks fourth in the state ofTennessee for tobacco pro-duction and is known forgrowing some of the finestquality dark-fired tobaccoanywhere in the world.

The county also produces10,000 head of beef cattleand 14,000 acres of hayannually. Seven thousandacres of corn and soybeansare produced annually, pri-marily in the Cumberlandand Harpeth River bottoms.

There isalso a 3.1-mile gravel trailthat runs from Eagle Pass toCheatham Dam Road. Picnictables are throughout thetrail and restroom facilitiesare at Turkey Junction.

» The 911 Memorial Play-ground is at 200 Marrow-bone Lane next to AshlandCity fire station No. 2. Itfeatures a playground andpicnic tables.

Kingston Springs

L.L. Burns Park andKingston Springs City Parkare both located on ParkRoad, across the HarpethRiver from each other.

The parks include severalsoccer fields, ball fields,picnic areas, walking tracks,playground areas and bas-ketball goals. There is also apublic canoe launch on theHarpeth River.

A “Splashground” facilityis open from Memorial Dayto Labor Day at L.L. BurnsPark. A large communitycenter is available forevents and rentals. The park

The town of Pegram has amulti-purpose city park,Pegram Park.

The park features ballfields and a covered picnicarea with shelter and a fire-

place. It also offers a stagearea, children’s playground,walking track, picnic tables,grills, tennis courts andbasketball court.

The town’s annual Inde-pendence Day and Christ-mas in the Park celebrationsare held there.

Pleasant View

Pleasant View is home toBalthrop Park. The park islocated off Highway 49, withits entrance on ChurchStreet across from PleasantView Elementary School.

The park features a play-ground area, covered picnictables and one ball field.

The town also operatesPleasant View CommunityPark on Pleasant View Road.It includes soccer fields, apavilion area, restrooms anda walking and nature trail.

Located 11 miles northwest ofAshland City, the right bank day-usearea features picnic shelters thatmay be reserved.

The area also provides numerousindividual picnic tables with grills, aswimming area with sand beach (nolife guard, swim at your own risk),boat launching ramps, playgrounds,volleyball courts, a softball field andpublic restrooms.

Sycamore Creek Recreation Area

The numerous species ofwildlife here, including abun-dant populations of waterfowl

Harpeth River State Park

This unique linear park lo-cated along the Harpeth Riv-er in South Cheatham Countyoffers natural, cultural andrecreational day use areasrich in historic significanceand natural beauty.

Canoe access areas are lo-cated at all sites (excludingarcheological areas) provid-ing beginner and advancedpaddlers opportunities tofloat the river. Bring yourown canoe or kayak or call lo-cal commercial outfitters fortrip information and boatrentals.

Whether you enjoy thethrill of fly-fishing or spincasting, the river hosts large

and small mouth bass, bream,crappie, bluegill, channel cat-fish and other game fish.

At the Narrows of the Har-peth, three trails originate ata common trailhead near thepark entrance. A two-milebluff overlook trail includes asteep ascent to a narrow bluffoffering hikers a panoramicview of the Harpeth Valley.

A half-mile trail along thebackside of the limestonebluff leads to the site of Mont-gomery Bell's Pattison Forgewhere a small waterfall is allthat remains of the iron forgeoperation.

In addition, guided tours ofMound Bottom are offered byreservation. Mound Bottom isa 1,000-year-old earthen-works left behind by a mightycivilization that once thrivedalong the Harpeth River.

Wildlife Management Areaoffers something for every-one — hunting, biking, bird-ing and other activities thatput wildlife first.

The property is owned bythe Tennessee Wildlife Re-sources Agency and is man-aged primarily for deer, but italso provides good squirrel,quail, turkey and raccoonhunting.

The CWMA offers the onlypublic firing range in Cheath-am County.

Area residents can enjoyduck hunting with 37 duckblinds in the wildlife area.The annual duck blind draw-ing is the first Saturday inAugust. The duck blinds areon Cheatham Lake WMA.

The CWMA, which wasestablished in 1939, also of-fers hunter camping in a

designated camping areanear the headquarters.Horseback riding is allowedon roads open to vehicles.

From Ashland City, takeHighway 49 toward Char-lotte. Cross the CumberlandRiver and continue four milesto Highway 250. Turn leftonto Highway 250 and go

four miles to the WMA en-trance, which is on your left.

The check station is threemiles from the entrance andmaps are outside the checkstation. The firing range is onthe left before you get to thecheck station.

Child HealthHealthy children are a

major priority of the healthdepartment. Well child check-ups include physical exams,screening tests and immuni-zations. Screenings are avail-able to assure normal devel-opment and to detect andtreat any medical conditionfor persons from birth to 21years of age. We stronglyrecommend regular checkupsand we make referrals formedical/dental services to besure all children are ashealthy as they can be.

Children's Special Services (CSS)This service assists with

medical treatment for chil-dren to age 21, when theyhave special medical needsand the family is financiallyunable to provide for neces-sary care. This service mayalso include speech andhearing screenings.

Family PlanningPatients receive a com-

plete physical exam and allappropriate lab tests, andare taught about birth con-trol methods and suppliedwith their chosen method(unless there is a medicalreason that would be danger-ous). Many infections andother contraceptive prob-lems can also be treated.

Food and General SanitationEnvironmental special-

ists are responsible for in-specting food service estab-lishments, hotel/motels,public swimming pools, bedand breakfast, child carefacilities and school plants.The division is also respon-sible for planning and pro-moting the rabies vaccina-tion clinic and investigatinganimal bites.

provides confidential testingand treatment for sexuallytransmitted diseases, in-

tious foods (cheese, milk,cereals, etc.) are issued towomen who are pregnant orbreast feeding and childrenunder five years of age whoare at risk of poor growth, ifthey meet income guide-lines. Breast feeding classesand support are available toall new mothers.

Free Program providessupport to help moms quitsmoking during their preg-nancy and to stay quit afterdelivery. After the birth ofthe baby, moms who con-tinue to be smoke free re-ceive a monthly voucher forfree diapers for their baby'sfirst year.
