    amilies! While schools are encouraged to create their own ideas, this calendar

    includes possible academic activities that can be used as opportunities to strengthen

    the responsibility that schools, amilies, and the community share to support student

    learning. Please note that some o the dates listed are unconventional and included

    or sheer un! Tereore, while many are itle I allowable activities, not all would

    qualiy. In these instances, it is recommended to seek other school and community

    partners to implement.

    National Read AcrossAmerica Day is an annualevent that is part o Read

    Across America, aninitiative on reading that

    was created by the NationalEducation Association

    (NEA).

    Each year, National ReadAcross America Day is

    celebrated on March 2nd,the birthday o Dr. Seuss.Tis day is an awareness

    day, calling all children andyouth in every community

    across the United States tocelebrate reading.

    Te Star Spangled Banner

    On March 3, 1931,President Herbert Hoover

    signed a congressionalresolution that officially

    National Pi Day iscelebrated annually on

    March 14th.

    National Pi Day is anannual celebration

    commemorating themathematical constant (pi). Pi Day is observedon March 14 (or 3/14

    in month/day ormat),because 3, 1 and 4 are the

    three most significantdigits o in the decimal

    orm. In 2009, theUnited States House o

    Representatives supportedthe designation o Pi Day.

    Chavez

    DAYCsar Chvez was born

    on March 31 in 1927.He was a migrant armworker rom the age o

    10. He became active witthe Community Service

    Organization, whichadvocated or the rights

    Chicano residents.

    Chvez co-ounded theNational Farm Workers

    Association in the early1960s. He ocusedattention on the plight o

    migrant arm workers angained support to have h

    organization be the firssuccessul arm workers

    union in the United StateHe used principles o noviolence, with strikes an

    boycotts. Csar Chvezremained president o

    United Farm Workers oAmerica (AFL-CIO) unt

    his death on April 23,1993.

    MAP DAYAnnually, Read a RoadMap Day is celebratedApril 5. I your studentis beginning to drive,

    knowing how to read aroad map is still a handyskill or them to learn.While you may intend

    your student to use a GPSdevice, what i the batteries

    die, or theres no servicein a remote location?Your student may haveto purchase a road map

    and read it to reach theirdestination. Aside rom

    reading road maps, thereare many proessions thatstill rely on reading maps.

    their communities.

    April 22, 1970, U.S. SenatorGaylord Nelson ounded

    Earth Day.

    HERITAGE MONTHOn October 5, 1978,

    President Jimmy Cartersigned a Joint Resolution

    designating the firstten days o May as a

    celebration o Asians andPacific Islanders in theUnited States. welveyears later, President

    George H.W. Bush signedan extension making the

    week-long celebration intoa month-long celebration.

    In 1992, the officialdesignation o May as

    Asian-Pacific American

    Heritage Month was signedinto law.

    Te month o May waschosen to commemoratethe immigration o the

    first Japanese to theUnited States on May 7,1843. Te anniversary

    o the completion o thetranscontinental railroad

    is also in May. It was

    completed on May 10,1869. Te majority othe workers who laid
