Top 10 Scams Targeting Seniors Financial scams targeting seniors have become so prevalent that they’re now considered

“the crime of the 21st century.”

Why? Because seniors are thought to have a significant amount of money sitting in their

accounts.

Financial scams also often go unreported or can be difficult to prosecute, so they’re

considered a “low-risk” crime. However, they're devastating to many older adults and can

leave them in a very vulnerable position with little time to recoup their losses.

It’s not just wealthy seniors who are targeted. Low-income older adults are also at risk of

financial abuse.

And it's not always strangers who perpetrate these crimes. Over 90% of all reported elder

abuse is committed by an older person’s own family members, most often their adult

children, followed by grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and others.

1. Health Care/Medicare/Health Insurance Fraud

2. Counterfeit Prescription Drugs

3. Funeral & Cemetery Scams

4. Fraudulent Anti-Aging Products

5. Telemarketing

6. Internet Fraud

7. Investment Schemes

8. Homeowner/Reverse Mortgage Scams

9. Sweepstakes & Lottery Scams

10. The Grandparent Scam

If you suspect you’ve been the victim of a scam…

Don’t be afraid or embarrassed to talk about it with someone you trust. You are not

alone, and there are people who can help. Doing nothing could only make it worse. Keep

handy the phone numbers and resources you can turn to, including the local police, your

bank (if money has been taken from your accounts), and Adult Protective Services. To

obtain the contact information for Adult Protective Services in your area, call the

Eldercare Locator, a government sponsored national resource line, at: 1-800-677-1116, or

visit their website at: www.eldercare.gov.

Thank You

Thank you everyone for all your caring thoughts,

cards and especially all of those who have helped

in many ways in this time of sorrow.

Cathy Mullison

Page 4: 2015 03 lake hammock village newsletter

We would like to thank everyone for their prayers,

support, phone calls, cards, delivery of food and

helping with errands following Jeff’s heart attack

on January 14. As many of you know, I was out of

town when he was stricken. I am convinced that

the quick and decisive action taken by Nancy Roy

and Linda and Lowell Hile to call 911 saved his life.

We are thankful that we live in a community where

neighbors take care of neighbors. We truly are a

“park with a heart”.

Sincerely, Jeff Hunt and Lori Johnsen

Thank you to the following residents that helped

make the Pancake Breakfast a success:

Jim & Joyce Middleton, John & Jeanine Miller,

Bruce & Marge Love and a great clean-up crew.

Thanks, Lee & Nancy Emery

We would like to thank the community and all the

individuals who expressed their concerns and well

wishes for Hacy’s mother during her

hospitalization. We are happy to say that she has

been transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Sun

City Center close to her home.

Thanks again, Hacy & Joyce Wright

The 2015 Super Bowl Party was a huge success

with 40 residents attending. Besides watching the

game, we ate delicious chili, potato soup,

homemade snacks, and dessert. Prizes were won

by Hacy Wright, Herman Biba, and Barb Dickerson.

We want to thank Hacy and Joyce Wright for doing

the decorating and assisting in general. Thanks to

Karen Wilson and Paul Rouble for their help with

setting up. Many others assisted in the set-up and

cleaning. Thanks to all for the help and the food.
