What was your main motivation to study a Bachelor of Pharmacy?My main motivation for choosing to study a Bachelor of Pharmacy was that I wanted to help people any way I could. By satisfying my keen interest in science, in particular chemistry and how it relates to the human body, pharmacy was the logical choice. Not only did studying pharmacy give me the opportunity to help people directly in the community but it also empowers me to be a vital member of the multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Why did you choose UQ to complete your degree?I chose UQ for my pharmacy degree because of its reputation for being one of the best pharmacy schools in Australia and knowing that I would be taught by people who are the forefront of the evolving healthcare system and leaders in their respective fields. I chose to continue with UQ for my Intern Training Program because I had learnt and gained so much from the amazing teaching staff during my time as an undergraduate. I could not think of a better program to help me get the most out of my internship and to help me become the best pharmacist I can be.

What pathway did you follow to where you are now? I decided I wanted to pursue a career in pharmacy after a work experience placement late in high school in my rural home town. I wasn’t able to gain direct entry into the pharmacy degree from high school however after a gap year, I decided to complete a year of a Bachelor of Science at UQ and then upgraded into the Bachelor of Pharmacy. Each experience was extremely valuable and was a key part in getting me to where I am now.

What did you most enjoy about studying a Bachelor of Pharmacy at UQ? One of the highlights of studying pharmacy at UQ was being taught at the amazing facilities at PACE (The Pharmacy Australia Centre of Excellence). Being taught at PACE provides an opportunity to expand your learning and overall career opportunities in a way that is not available at many other institutions. Another highlight would have to be the range of options available for clinical placements. You have access to over 500 community, hospital and industrial sites within Australia and overseas which allows you to discover which path you wish to follow for your future career.

One non-academic reason I really enjoyed studying pharmacy at UQ was for the close-knit cohorts that develop throughout the four years of study. It’s a great opportunity to meet like-minded people who share similar interests and goals and as a result I have many lifelong friends.

Would you recommend UQ to Year 12 students considering doing a Bachelor of Pharmacy?I would recommend UQ Pharmacy to others simply for the fact that you have access to some of the best teachers and clinicians in the pharmacy industry. Their knowledge and skills are amplified by the state-of-the art facilities which create an amazing all-in-one place to learn. The knowledge and skills I have developed as a part of this program will hold me in great stead wherever my career takes me in the future.

Where do you work now and where do you hope to be in 10 years time?After completing my internship in a regional hospital, I have obtained a permanent position as a clinical pharmacist in the same regional hospital. I hope to use this opportunity to further develop my skills and knowledge to become an essential part of the multidisciplinary healthcare team and to improve poor health outcomes in these rural/regional areas. The experience of being a health professional in a regional area will only help me to improve and grow as a person and will provide me with a good foundation for the rest of my career. In the future I wish to pursue further studies and to specialise in the field of infectious diseases for which I have a keen interest.

Admission requirementsTo gain admission to undergraduate programs, you must satisfy prerequisites and have a sufficient entry score (OP/IB/Rank).

But there are alternative pathways for entry if you do not meet the requirements, and you can upgrade your score. See Alternative entry or Improving an entry score (upgrading) in the next column.

PrerequisitesSubject prerequisites are the Queensland Year 12 subjects required for individual programs. You may also gain admission to programs with subject equivalents from interstate or overseas schooling, external senior studies, or tertiary studies. Some programs have additional prerequisites, e.g. the Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test (UMAT).

UQ OP GuaranteeIf you achieve an OP 1-5 (or IB/rank equivalent), you are guaranteed entry into your highest eligible preference for the majority of UQ’s undergraduate programs, regardless of program cut-offs.

Entry scoresEntry scores include Overall Positions (OP) and Ranks. Eligible applicants are selected for admission to a program in order of merit based on entry scores. Those with the highest entry score are selected first, and so on until the program quota is filled.

The minimum OP or rank required for entry varies from year to year and is determined once applications have been processed and places allocated. While it is difficult to predict exactly what OP or rank will be needed for entry to a program, the previous year’s cut-off points can be used as a guide.

Current Queensland Year 12 students receive an OP on the basis of their overall achievement at school in comparison with other students. OPs are determined by the Queensland Studies Authority and range from 1 to 25, with 1 being the highest.

All other applicants are allocated a rank on a scale of 1-99.9, with 99.9 being the highest. This common ranking scale allows many different types of qualifications to be compared, such as:• interstate Year 12 students are allocated

a Nationally Agreed Common Index, the Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR), which is used to calculate a rank

• Australian students who complete the International Baccalaureate (IB) are allocated a Nationally Agreed Common Index – referred to as the Combined Rank by QTAC – which is used to calculate a rank

• non-school-leavers (including previous Queensland Year 12 students who qualified for an OP) and OP-ineligible Year 12 school-leavers are allocated a rank when they apply for tertiary education through QTAC based on previous secondary, tertiary, bridging and preparatory studies, and/or work experience.

English language requirementsIf you are from a non-English-speaking background, you must provide evidence of English proficiency. This may be achieved through a pass in Queensland Year 12 English (or interstate equivalent) or by other means, as outlined in the Entry Options booklet available from UQ Admissions.

Alternative entryIf you did not complete Year 12, did not achieve a high enough entry score for your preferred program, or are a mature-aged applicant, there are alternative entry pathways to UQ. Contact UQ Admissions for advice.

Improving an entry score (upgrading)If you are not successful in gaining a place in your preferred program and want to improve your entry score or meet program prerequisites, you can accept an offer in a less competitive program with fewer prerequisites and try to improve your entry score. This process is called upgrading.

We recommend that you complete the equivalent of one full-time year of bachelor degree study to upgrade to higher demand programs (such as dentistry or veterinary science) as the entry ranks allocated to attempts that total less than one full-time year are capped. Depending on your academic performance, your new entry rank could be higher than your previous rank.

Special entry programsIf you are of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent, or have suffered financial hardship or severe disadvantage beyond your control that has affected previously satisfactory results, you may be eligible for special entry to UQ. Programs for high-school studentsUQ’s Enhanced Studies Program (ESP) is the perfect opportunity to try a tertiary-level course before you start university. While still in Year 12, you can complete a university course, attend lectures and tutorials, and access UQ facilities. Once you pass the

course, you may get credit towards a UQ program and can also boost your university entry rank through the Bonus Rank Scheme: see www.uq.edu.au/esp

TERmiNOLOGY EXPLAiNEDYou will hear a lot of new terms at University: here is an explanation of some of them...

Bachelor degreeA qualification awarded for the first level of study undertaken at university, generally requiring three to five years of study.

Course (formerly known as subject)A component of study within a program, similar to a subject at school. Full-time students usually study four courses per semester.

CRICOS CodeThe Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS) Code indicates a registered program offered to international students studying in Australia on student visas.

Dual degreeA combination of two UQ degree programs undertaken at the same time (sometimes called dual, parallel, combined, or double degrees).

ElectiveA course that you can choose to study from a set of options. Some UQ programs allow electives from outside your main area of study, or from other programs.

Entry scoresUndergraduate students are given an entry score based on high-school studies or other post-secondary studies: OP for Queensland Year 12s, Interstate Transfer Index (ITI) for Year 12s from other Australian states, and Rank for all others. Once you complete the equivalent of one full-time year of tertiary study (Bachelor level or higher), your OP or ranking is converted to a rank based on Grade Point Average (GPA).

FacultyA major organisational unit within UQ, with responsibility for academic programs, e.g. Faculty of Arts. Faculties may have a number of sub-faculty academic units

called Schools, e.g. School of ... The head of a faculty is called an Executive Dean.

Grade Point Average (GPA)The average grade of your results, weighted by the unit value of each course. GPA is determined on a semester basis and ranges from 1 (lowest) to 7 (highest).

HonoursSome undergraduate programs require an additional year of advanced or more specialised study for students to be awarded an honours degree. Other programs calculate honours based on overall performance in specific years of the program.

International studentA student who is not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, nor a New Zealand citizen, and is enrolled or proposes to enrol at an institution in Australia. Temporary residents of Australia are classified as international students.

MajorAn area of specialised study within a program of at least #12 units, e.g, Chemistry in Science, which may be a formal requirement. Extended majors and dual majors are when the specialised study comprises a higher proportion of the degree.

MinorA small group of courses in a discipline. A minor is worth approximately half the value of a major.

Overall Position (OP)Overall Positions, or OPs, provide a State-wide rank order of students from 1-25 (1 highest), based on achievement in Authority subjects studied for the Queensland Senior Certificate. Your OP shows how well you have performed in your senior studies when compared with the performances of all other OP-eligible students in Queensland.

PlacementsA course requiring you to undertake a period of practical, work-related experience, usually at an organisation external to the University, designed to enable you to practise the skills of the profession in a real-life setting.

Postgraduate programsPrograms studied after graduating from undergraduate degrees which include graduate certificates and diplomas, masters, and doctorates.

What you will studyThe Bachelor of Dental Science degree provides you with the knowledge, skills and attitudes you require to become a competent dentistry practitioner. These include the application of scientific principles for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of oral diseases and abnormalities. You will undertake oral health courses in your first year which includes an introduction to clinical practice. The remaining four years of the degree involve three years of applied

dental science (28 weeks of class contact each year) and one year of external clinical practice (34 weeks). Clinical work commences in second year and is broadened in your third and fourth years. You will be assigned patients for which you are responsible for their dental care. Your clinical work in areas such as general practice dentistry, orthodontics, paediatric dentistry, periodontics and prosthodontics are undertaken at the Dental School. You will gain experience in the areas of oral medicine and oral and maxillofacial surgery in Brisbane teaching hospitals.

Your final year of study provides you with a variety of external clinical experience. You will be rotated through State Government health clinics and the Aboriginal Medical Service, in Queensland and interstate. After completing the first three years of your degree, you may apply for entry to the concurrent BDSc/MPhil degree for entry at the end of Year 4.

What you need to get inAdmission is directly into Year 1 and is open to you as a school-leaver or if you have completed one year or more of tertiary studies. Your postgraduate study optionsThe UQ School of Dentistry offers a unique combined BDSc/MPhil stream allowing you to graduate after 6 years with the MPhil research masters degree as well as the BDSc. It is the only dental school in the southern hemisphere to offer this combined stream of study. The MPhil research degree provides a springboard into future career paths in research, academe, and specialist training. The Doctor of Clinical Dentistry degree provides a recognised pathway for specialist training. Research higher degrees (MPhil and PhD) in your area of interest are also available. What you will studyThe Bachelor of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences focuses on developing a broad understanding of the human body and explores everything from jogging, to low-carbohydrate diets, human movement and athletic performance right through to the science of food. In your first year, theoretical and practical studies in applied sciences are combined with human movement studies. What you will studyThis degree explores the complex nature of human movement. This includes how the human body reacts to fitness and exercise regimens, performs at all levels of sport participation, engages in recreational activities, as well as other acute and chronic physical activity pursuits. Your study covers a diverse range of courses including anatomy, biomechanics, motor control, exercise physiology, exercise and sport psychology, physical activity and health, sports medicine and exercise prescription. Studying exercise and sport science at UQ allows you to become automatically accredited as an exercise scientist with

Exercise & Sports Science Australia (ESSA). You will have the opportunity to select electives and practicum placements in your final year to provide a wide range of employment opportunities in a variety of sport and exercise settings. You will complete 400 hours of professional practice in institutes or academies of sport, hospitals, private practice, professional sporting teams, as well as within the school’s professionally equipped exercise sciences laboratories and clinics.

After completion of your first year you may be eligible to enter the Clinical Exercise Physiology major. The Clinical Exercise Physiology major has limited places and entry is based on competitive GPA at the end of the first year. Completion of this major allows you to become automatically accredited with ESSA as an exercise physiologist, as well as accreditation as an exercise scientist. Medicare and many private health providers recognise and cover services provided by accredited exercise physiologists. As an accredited exercise physiologist you will specialise in clinical exercise prescription and the delivery of exercise-based lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for persons at high-risk of developing, or with existing, chronic and complex medical conditions and injuries. You will complete more than 500 hours of clinical exercise prescription and professional practice in state, national or international locations. The honours program is a modified program of study in Years 3 and 4. An offer to enter honours will be based on academic performance at the end of the fifth semester of study.

What will I study? Undertaking a Health Promotion major will enable you to examine how health services and programs are designed and delivered, to facilitate community health and prevent disease and disability. You will examine the role human behaviour plays in the incidence, prevention and progression of illness, effective strategies to promote health and understanding of the role of health services, health policy and health care decision making. You will study the core components of the health sciences degree while focusing on health promotion and health behaviours, physical activity, nutrition and health services planning. During your studies you will gain in-depth knowledge of these issues and the skills to critically analyse situations and develop programs to address them.

Where will I work? Graduates will work in roles that aim to improve the health of the population and to reduce health inequities. Health promotion officers typically work in government and non-government organisations, population health units, community health centres, medicare locals, non-profit organisations and international health agencies ensuring that high quality health services and programs are delivered to the community. Health promoters are increasingly taking up roles in private companies to support employees. Graduates can work as:• health promotion practitioners

and educators• community health officers• policy officers• program evaluators• project officers• consultants.

What are my options for further study? The Bachelor of Health Sciences provides a broad overview of health care and equips graduates with the foundations needed for a career in nearly any aspect of the health care industry. It is an excellent option if you want to keep your career path open or don’t gain direct entry into your preferred clinical degree. By completing the Health Promotion major, you can go on to study a Master of Public Health or a Master of International Public Health or progress to a clinical degree in allied health, nursing or social work.

What will I study? Human nutrition is a global term which concerns the way that foods and nutrients are acquired and used. It includes studies in biomedical science, biochemistry, nutrition, behavioural sciences, food sciences and public health nutrition.

Where will I work? This major will enable graduates to work as community nutritionists, encouraging the population to achieve healthier eating and reducing the burden of diet-related disease. Community nutritionists typically work in government organisations, community health, private organisations and non-profit agencies. What are my options for further study? The Bachelor of Health Sciences with a major in Nutrition has been specifically designed as a pathway into the Master of Dietetics Studies and satisfies all the prerequisite courses required for entry to that degree. The degree also provides the basis for further studies in public health nutrition, health promotion or research.


Provisional entry to the Master of Dietetics Studies degreeBecome a fully accredited Dietetian in4.5 years with a Bachelor of Health Sciences/Master of Dietetics Studies. The Bachelor of Health Sciences provides provisional entry to the Master of Dietetics Studies degree (see page 43). If you do not receive the OP required for provisional entry you can complete the Bachelor of Health Sciences Nutrition major and apply to enter the Dietetics degree once you graduate. The Bachelor of Health Sciences Nutrition major allows you to complete all of the prerequisite courses needed for entry to the Master of Dietetics Studies, while also allowing you to develop core knowledge in public health and community nutrition.

What you will studyThe Bachelor of Health, Sport and Physical Education is designed to prepare you for a career in health and physical education as well as sport education and related areas (e.g. health promotion, sports coaching, and recreation and sports development). This degree emphasises problem-based learning engaging you in “real-life situations”. During Years 1 and 2, you will gain a strong foundation in the sub-disciplines of human movement studies. You will study the complex and diverse nature of human movement from physiological, biomechanical, socio-cultural,

psychological, pedagogical (teaching) and health perspectives. In Year 3, you will learn about teaching health, sport and physical activity, in both school and community environments. In Years 3 and 4 you will complete professional placements in schools including an extended 12-week, full term major practicum placement within a school’s health and physical education (HPE) department. Your professional placements will provide opportunities to work with students in a variety of contexts including secondary, primary and special needs, and experience professional life in schools.

Learning experiences throughout this degree have purposely been designed to be fun, involve physical activity, and encourage team work. You can study honours as a modified program in Years 3 and 4.

Where this can take youThere are many career opportunities available to you at the completion of a Health, Sport and Physical Educationdegree. What you will studyYou will be trained as a highly skilled doctor capable of meeting future challenges in a wide variety of careers. The curriculum has been designed with an emphasis on problem-based learning and group work.

You will work on a carefully planned series of patient-centred problems, each designed to highlight principles and issues in health and disease. Your early patient contact and clinical training equips you with high levels of clinical skills and medical knowledge.

You are able to select a clinical school where you are based three days per week and are taught in small groups. Due to the balance of clinical practice and academic rigour, the UQ midwifery degree is highly regarded by the health industry.All of this means you will graduate from study fully equipped and confident to embark on a career as a midwife.

Midwifery is an exciting, challenging and rewarding career. UQ’s midwifery degree provides you with a leading education as well as excellent opportunities to continue on in your midwifery studies or undertake further research. Upon successful completion you are eligible to apply for registration as a midwife through the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.An Honours year can be undertaken once your bachelor degree is completed.

LocationBachelor of Midwifery (Clinical Schools – Various) After a four week intensive training program, the degree is delivered through small group based teaching three days a week at a clinical school (Caboolture Hospital or Ipswich Hospital) and lectures one day a week at the UQ Ipswich Campus.

Bachelor of Midwifery (Mater Clinical School)The degree is delivered through small group based teaching three days a week at a clinical school (Mater Hospital South Brisbane) and lectures one day a week at Translational Research Institute (TRI) located at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Clinical School in Woolloongabba.

What will you learn at your clinical school?During your midwifery degree, you are given the opportunity to experience ‘follow throughs’. This means you will be involved in an ongoing relationship with expectant mothers – beginning with the initial contact in early pregnancy, through to the time during and immediately after the birth – in both the community and hospital settings. The intention of the follow-through experience is to enable you to experience continuity with individual women through pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period.

Where this can take youUpon successful completion, a career in midwifery will enable you to work in a variety of maternity and neonatal settings including:• public, private or community health care• clinical practice in metropolitan, regional,

rural or remote settings both in Australia and overseas

• academia / clinical teaching• health research• health service management• aid organisations.

Your postgraduate study optionsShould you be eligible, you may have the option to complete honours as an additional year of study upon completion of your bachelor degree. The School of Nursing and Midwifery has a range of postgraduate midwifery options available for registered midwives including a Graduate Certificate and Masters of Midwifery. Other postgraduate and Research Higher Degree study options are available through the School of Nursing and Midwifery. See pages 43 and 44.

Bachelor of Nursing (Mater Clinical School)The degree is delivered through small group based teaching three days a week at a clinical school (Mater Hospital South Brisbane or Mater Hospital Redlands) and lectures one day a week at Translational Research Institute (TRI) located at the Princess Alexandra Hospital Clinical School in Woolloongabba.

What will you learn at your clinical school?You initially learn how to conduct patient assessments, for pain and nutrition, as well as taking vital signs. You will learn general patient care, including patient hygiene and management of the ill, progressing to administration of medication and advanced nursing skills. You have the opportunity to select specialist areas to complete your fifth semester of study. You can select accident and emergency units, paediatrics, a variety of mental health areas, rural nursing, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service and peri-operative nursing.

What you will studyThe Bachelors of Nursing / Midwifery Dual Degree combines the stand alone Bachelor of Nursing and Bachelor of Midwifery degrees.

In the first three years of the degree your lectures and problem-based tutorials will be incorporated with clinical experiences in selected partner Clinical Schools. In your final year of the degree you will undertake extensive preceptored clinical placement providing you with exposure to an area of specialty midwifery and nursing practice, and the opportunity to consolidate and refine your skills in order to meet national competency standards for nurses and midwives, and facilitate a smooth transition to graduate practice.

What you will studyAs an Occupational Therapist you are a health professional trained to help people of all ages overcome factors which limit their ability to function in their chosen “occupational roles” and which detract from their quality of life. These limiting factors can be caused by injury or illness, psychological or emotional difficulties, developmental delay or the effects of ageing. Your role as an Occupational Therapist is to work in partnership with your clients to optimise their functioning and quality of life. You may work in children’s hospitals, schools, community settings, adult hospitals, private clinics, rehabilitation units, hostels, nursing homes, the workplace and industry.

In the first year of your degree, theoretical and practical studies in occupational therapy are combined with biological and behavioural sciences.

In second year, you apply theory to occupational performance problems and undertake further study in social, biological and medical sciences. Third year concentrates on occupational therapy approaches, with clinical practice undertaken in University-affiliated teaching units in hospitals, schools, private practice, industry and the community. In fourth year, clinical practice continues and time is also spent examining professional issues and evidence-based practice.

The honours program is a modified program of study in Years 3 and 4. An offer to enter honours will be based on academic performance in the first two years of the degree.

What you will studyOral health is important for good overall health and as an oral health therapist you play an important auxiliary-role to dentists. Oral Health Therapy has three fields:• dental therapy, which provides routine

services for children’s oral health• dental hygiene, which involves

prevention of oral disease and professional cleaning for all ages, and

• health promotion, which involves educating people, groups and communities on how to have healthy teeth and gums.

The first year of study provides you with foundation knowledge in the health of oral tissues, emphasises the importance ofprevention as a goal, and introduces clinical practice. In your second year, courses develop your knowledge and the clinical skills you need for the care of individual patients. You apply your knowledge of dental diseases to oral health therapy practice.

Your clinical experience is extended in Year 3. You focus on the provision of care to groups with special needs and on oral health for communities and population groups. • Every day is different – motor vehicle accidents, medical emergencies, industrial incidents, sporting events, inter-hospital transfers, community education - the job is more than just sirens and flashing lights.

What you will studyThis degree prepares graduates for employment as ambulance paramedics. The first year of the degree provides a strong foundational knowledge in areas such as the structure & function of the human body, pathology, public health and evidence-based health care. You will also be prepared for paramedic practice with studies in communication, ambulance policies and procedures, and practical training in the use of ambulance equipment.

In the second and third years of the degree, you will explore common paramedic conditions and emergencies using a systems-based approach. There is increased emphasis on acquiring knowledge and skills in paramedic theory and practice through patient-centred and case-based learning strategies. Clinical reasoning, problem solving and interpersonal skills are developed. This phase of the degree also focuses on the contemporary role of paramedics as pre-hospital care professionals and includes topics such as legal and ethical principles in health, professional practice and clinical mentoring.

You will undertake clinical placements with the Queensland Ambulance Service throughout the degree for practical “hands-on” experience in the role of a paramedic.

Clinical Placement RequirementsThere are a number of requirements that students must meet prior to attending clinical placement with the Queensland Ambulance Service. See www.som.uq.edu.au/paramedicscience for further information.

Where this can take youOn successful graduation of your Bachelor of Paramedic Science you will be able to apply for an entry-level Ambulance Paramedic position with an Australasian ambulance service. What you will studyYear 1: You will undertake studies in introductory pharmacy, chemistry, biology, physiology and anatomy, providing you with the knowledge of over-the-counter medications, the Australian health system, and community pharmacy practice which will allow you to be employed as a healthcare assistant in a pharmacy.Years 2 & 3: You will develop important counselling skills in one of the School’s six simulated pharmacies, learn about the legislation that governs the Pharmacy profession and how to dispense prescriptions in PACE’s state-of-the-art dispensing laboratories. You will experience the latest advances in pharmacy technology when you try your hand at UQ’s medicines dispensing robot. You will learn how to help patients optimise drug use and about the design of medicines and the formulation of drugs. You will also learn how drugs act on the human body, how the body eliminates drugs and how drugs can interact with other medications.Year 4: Your previous studies will be strengthened and integrated to optimise the use of medicines in individual patients. You will also have the option of undertaking an Honours stream and gain experience and expertise in research. A business management course is also undertaken in Year 4, which develops your skills in running the business aspects of a community pharmacy or performing similar managerial duties in a hospital pharmacy. You will cover strategic, financial, inventory, people management and current professional issues relating to pharmacy practice.

Practical placements programPlacements run throughout the degree, beginning in first year and can be undertaken in over 500 community pharmacies or hospitals throughout rural and metropolitan Australia and overseas. You will also spend a total of at least 8 weeks undertaking a short research activity in either a community or hospital pharmacy or another area that promotes effective and efficient use of medicines.

Where will I work?Pharmacists are employed wherever medicines are used; however there are three key areas of expertise: You may choose to work in, manage or even own a community pharmacy, where you will:• Provide primary health care through the

identification and treatment of common ailments;

• Dispense prescriptions, prepare creams and mixtures and provide medication information and monitoring;

• Promote community health and provide advice about illness prevention and healthy lifestyle choices; and

• Undertake home medication reviews.You may become a hospital pharmacist and be involved in:• Preparing and supplying medicines;• Providing drug information to health care

professionals; and• Educating and advising patients,

doctors and nurses on the appropriate and safe use of medicines.

New opportunities are developing for prescribing advisors and consulting pharmacists in a range of settings, including GP clinics.

You may choose to become an industrial pharmacist and become involved in manufacture, quality control, clinical trials and the registration and marketing of pharmaceutical products. UQ pharmacy graduates have also gone on to senior positions in the pharmaceutical industry, government and health care companies or have used pharmacy as a platform for further study towards medicine or a research higher degree.

Who will recognise your qualifications?This Pharmacy degree is fully accredited by the Australian Pharmacy Council and qualifies students for provisional registration with the Pharmacy Board of Australia. During provisional registration students must meet the standards set by the Pharmacy Board of Australia. These standards include undertaking 1,824 hours of supervised practice, completing an Intern Training Program and passing examinations approved by the Pharmacy Board of Australia.

What you will studyAs a Physiotherapist you will have a wide range of skills for the care of people who have pain or loss of function caused by a physical injury or disorder, and for people with physical disabilities. These disabilities and disorders can occur at any age and can arise from a variety of causes, including injury and degenerative processes. You will care for people with musculoskeletal, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular and other conditions, using techniques to reduce pain, improve movement and restore normal muscle control for better motor performance and function. Physiotherapy aims to optimise a person’s physical function and quality of life through rehabilitation practices and preventative health strategies.

You will study basic applied medical and physiotherapy sciences in addition to physiotherapy professional courses. During the early part of the degree, you will complete courses to develop an understanding of normal human structure and function as well as human behaviours. The practice of physiotherapy encompasses a diversity of clinical specialities to meet the needs of different client groups. Over later years, your study will focus on the theory and practice of physiotherapy, including the approach to prevention, clinical reasoning and diagnosis, the therapeutic management of pain, disorders of movement and optimisation of function to enhance the health and welfare of the community across the lifespan. During the final two years of the degree, you will complete supervised clinical practice, gaining experience in the assessment and management of clients in different environments.

Honours can be studied as a modified program in Years 3 and 4. An offer to enter honours will be based on academic performance in the first two years of the degree.

What you will studyAs a Speech Pathologist you will assess and treat disorders of communication in the areas of speech, voice, language and fluency. Your clients include children who do not develop normal communication and people who acquire communication problems as a result of disease or injury, such as a stroke. A person’s ability to communicate may also be impaired because of disabilities such as hearing loss, brain damage, intellectual disability, stuttering, malfunction of the speech or respiratory organs, or emotional disturbances. You will also work with clients who have feeding or swallowing problems.

The first two years of the degree focus on studies in anatomy, linguistics, physiology, psychology and medical specialities. In first year, an emphasis on normal communication forms the reference point for second year studies in the description and analysis of communication disorders in the areas of voice, fluency, hearing, speech, language and oral functioning. Second, third and fourth year studies are case and problem-based, and integrate understanding communication disorders with the assessment and management of clients.

Honours can be studied as a modified program in Years 3 and 4. An offer to enter honours will be based on academic performance in the first two years of the degree.

Andrew Sax PhD StudentCompleting a research degree was always on the cards, however I never imagined going straight from my undergraduate degree into research. After graduating with first class honours, I was offered an APA Scholarship along with a place in the PhD program and begun my investigation to assess the influence of high intensity training on plasma insulin-like growth factor levels, functional physical capacity and psychosocial measures with colorectal cancer survivors.

I thoroughly enjoy research. I like being able to work on my own schedule and in a dedicated research office with likeminded people. Knowing that I am contributing to research that will eventuate into clinical practice and help people in the long term has always been a dream of mine.

diploma will suit you if you studied a language at high school and want to maintain your proficiency. But it will also suit you if you have never studied a foreign language: you don’t need

any prior experience. The diploma is available in Chinese, Classical languages, French, German, Indonesian, Japanese,

Korean, Russian and Spanish.

Coursework programsPostgraduate coursework programs include graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, coursework masters, coursework masters (advanced) and professional doctorates, and require you to complete prescribed assessment. There may be a research component in some programs but they mostly require lectures, laboratories, tutorials, assignments and examinations.

Graduate certificates, graduate diplomas, and masters (by coursework) programs are frequently available in progression or as individual programs under a wide range of disciplines. Depending on your background, you may enter a masters program directly, or be asked to apply for a graduate certificate, then progress to a graduate diploma, then to a coursework masters.

Research higher degreesResearch higher degrees (RHDs) require that at least two-thirds of the program is supervised independent research (a thesis). Some limited coursework may be required.

RHDs include the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programs. The PhD takes three-and-a-half years and the MPhil one-and-a-half years to complete, and to be awarded these degrees you must produce either a 40,000 or 80,000 word thesis of original research.

Fees and costsCourse fees and student contributionsWhen you study at University, at the start of each semester or teaching period (study period) you are charged a fee for each course in which you enrol.

Most undergraduate places at UQ are Commonwealth supported, i.e. funded partly by the Australian Government (Commonwealth support) and partly by you (student contribution). You are eligible for Commonwealth support if you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen or an Australian permanent resident and have obtained a Commonwealth supported place. International students pay full tuition fees.

As fees are charged according to the courses you undertake, not the program in which you are enrolled, it is not possible to publish a fixed fee for a program – and so “indicative” annual fees (based on average first year enrolment patterns) are listed on our Courses and Programs website to help with your financial planning.

Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF)A compulsory Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) was introduced in 2012 as a result of legislation passed by the Australian Parliament. The SSAF is used to support non-academic services such as sporting and recreation activities, employment and career advice, child care, financial advice, and food services. UQ will levy the fee, which is capped at a maximum of $272 for 2013, according to whether you are an internal or external student, or enrolled full-time or part-time. The fee is indexed annually.

Living costsAs a university student, you will also need to consider other costs of living, especially if you are living away from home for the first time. These may include accommodation, books and study requirements, transport, and parking. Fortunately, a wide range of assistance is available.

UQU, the Student Union, has a secondhand bookshop at St Lucia, and provides many low-cost entertainment activities plus an employment service. UQ’s Student Services offer help with accommodation.

And the Australian Government provides financial support for low-income earners, as well as fee repayment options for most students.

Financial assistanceCentrelink student servicesThe Australian Government’s Centrelink provides three income-support payments for Australian tertiary students: Youth Allowance, Austudy and ABSTUDY.

You can apply for these payments at any Centrelink Customer Service Centre. Other schemes include:• an interest-free advance loan for

students, where you are paid part of your allowance as a lump-sum advance

• the Pensioner Education Supplement (PES), which is a payment to certain categories of pensioners commencing study

• the Health Care Card, which enables Commonwealth health concessions, such as low-cost pharmaceuticals, under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS).

HECS-HELPIf you have a Commonwealth supported place, you may be eligible to receive HECS-HELP, an Australian Government loan scheme that allows an eligible Australian citizen or permanent humanitarian visa holder in Australia to defer repayment of all or part of their student contribution amount until their income meets a specific threshold.

This means you do not have to start repaying your HECS-HELP debt until you earn above a certain income level ($49,095 for the 2012-13 financial year). Loan repayments are then taken out of your pay as additional tax. You need to supply your tax file number if you wish to obtain a HECS-HELP loan.

Each study period, if you pay $500 or more “up-front” to the University, i.e. at the time of enrolment, you will receive a 10 per cent discount on your upfront payment. (Please note that New Zealand citizens or Australian permanent residents without a humanitarian visa are not eligible for HECS-HELP and must pay their student contributions up-front with no discount).

SA-HELPAustralian citizens and permanent humanitarian visa holders who are unable to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF) upfront may be eligible for assistance from the Commonwealth through an element of the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) known as SA-HELP. You require a tax file number to obtain SA-HELP.

ScholarshipsuQ scholarships are awarded to recognise academic excellence combined with outstanding leadership; to assist students from families experiencing significant financial hardship; to support elite athletes; to help offset the costs of overseas study; and to aid students wishing to gain valuable research experience.

Scholarships are not only funded by the University, but are also generously supported by industry partners, private donors and the government.

Academic scholarshipsAcademic scholarships aim to reward very high-achieving school leavers who, in their senior years, have also demonstrated significant leadership potential. Applications open in July and close on 31 October each year.

Equity scholarshipsuQ is keen to support students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds to realise their tertiary study aspirations.

More than 100 UQ-Link Access Scholarships, valued at $12,000 over four years, are awarded each year to commencing students who demonstrate significant financial hardship. UQ-Link Access students who enrol at UQ receive a $500 start-up bursary to help offset the initial costs of coming to university.

If you wish to be considered for one of these scholarships, you should complete the Financial Hardship section of QTAC’s Educational Access Scheme when submitting your QTAC application.

Centrelink scholarshipsIf you receive a study support payment such as Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY, you will be able to access the Student Start-Up Scholarship through Centrelink. Relocation Scholarships are also available to regional/remote students needing to relocate from home to attend university.

Field of study scholarshipsThanks to generous financial support from industry partners and University donors, UQ is able to offer a wide range of scholarships across most study areas. In general, you must complete at least one year of study before you can apply, although some faculties do offer entry scholarships for commencing students.

Scholarships for students studying at UQ Ipswich or UQ GattonIf you plan to enrol in a program at UQ Ipswich or UQ Gatton, you may be eligible for additional scholarship opportunities.

Scholarships for Indigenous studentsThere are many scholarships for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students including:
