The Sixth Form encapsulates all that The Grange stands

for. Small class sizes, a wide choice of subjects to study,

plenty of individual guidance and much hard work from

teachers and pupils alike have brought great academic

success when judged by any accepted measure.

    ART

In Art and Design we aim to develop students, through

    intellectual, imaginative and investigative talents.

We look to broaden our students understanding

of the subject through conceptual and contextual

analysis, aesthetic awareness and practical discovery.

We aim to develop a critical understanding of

the interrelationship between Art and artists, andthe context in which they operate. However, more

importantly, we look to allow each individual to express

ideas and thoughts that are important to them.

As well as Art (A level) we also oer separate A levels in Texles, Photography and Art

Crical and Contextual studies, the course structure being the same across all disciplines.

    BIOLOGY

Biology is the study of living things and how they

work. Particular importance is placed on the study of

humans and how our knowledge of living things can

be used for the benefit of humankind. One of the most

important problems facing biologists at the moment

is how we can get the most out of our environment

    BUSINESS

The course is designed to encourage students to

develop a critical understanding of organisations

and the markets in which they operate. It will

enable the student to be aware that business

behaviour can be studied from a wide range of

perspectives such as those of the employer, the

employee, the government, the customer. Many

of our students choose to study business-related

    CHEMISTRY

Chemistry is the science which studies the production

of new substances from naturally occurring materials.

Without chemists our lives would be very different

since chemists are responsible for developing, for

example: synthetic fibres that are used to make our

clothes; biodegradable plastics; greener fuels for

use in cars; electrochemical cells; synthetic routes

to make pharmaceuticals. They also look into how

the environmental impact and costs of making new

materials can be reduced and how we can minimise

pollution; the list is almost endless.

    COURSE STRUCTURE

Starng from the level of GCSE Chemistry, the course builds a theorecal basis on which

an understanding of chemical changes can be laid. With the theorecal foundaon of

    CLASSICAL CIVILISATION

This non-linguistic A/AS level involves the study of

the society and literature of ancient Greece and

Rome. The main political, religious and social issues

are studied by close reference to selected authors

and their contemporary period of history.

Although specific topics may vary, the main

themes of study for the Greek section revolve

around Athenian society, the Homeric epics, Greek

Tragedy and History. The Roman section covers the

Augustan age, Roman epic and Roman society.

    ENGLISH LITERATURE

The A level English Literature course is designed

for those who genuinely enjoy literature, reading

and essay-writing. It offers an interesting and

varied taste of a wide range of literature (texts from

the 1600s to modern day) which is studied with

reference to its historical context. We are excited

about the course which we think presents literatureas a lively and interesting subject concerned with

human nature and the issues associated with life.

    PHILOSOPHY

Philosophy is different from other academic

disciplines in that it teaches you not what to

Philosophy instils a set of skills that will have adirect application in every area of academic

These core skills are highly prized by universies and employers alike, and

include the ability to think clearly, logically and creavely, to communicate

    PHYSICS

Physics is the study of matter and energy at a

fundamental level. Using the tools provided by

Mathematics, physicists unravel the rules by which

nature operates, developing theories and testing

    them against experiment.

    COURSE STRUCTURE

It is likely that students will take the AQA Physics A level course from September 2015.

    A level topics

    1. Measurements: uncertaines in measurements, SI units, esmaon

    2. Parcles and Radiaon: atomic structure, parcle physics, spectra

    ^; Waves: interference, diracon

    4. Mechanics: kinemacs, projecles, Newtons Laws, energy in mechanics

    5. Electricity: circuit calculaons, EMF, resisivity

    6. Further Mechanics: Simple Harmonic Moon

_; Thermal Physics: heat transfer, kinec theory of maer

`; Fields: gravity, orbits, magnec elds

b; Nuclear Physics: radioacve decay, nuclear instability

    RELIGIOUS STUDIES

To study Ethics in the Sixth Form, it is not necessary to have taken

the subject at GCSE. A student entering with a good range of

subjects and satisfactory grades, together with the willingness and

competence to achieve success, will do well on this course.
