PRESIDENT’S BOARD MEMBERSLETTER

Greetings all:I hope you have had a good holiday season and are excited about the New Year. I know that as your president, I am looking forward to our new year together. I believe 2014 will provide us with a number of events and programs to help us stay informed and connected. Many of these will be familiar to us – the Petro Show, our Legislative Breakfast and Retail Day, the Spring Golf Classic just to name a few. I want to encourage you to look at these in a new way. I know you already believe there is value there or you wouldn’t be investing your time and money. This year, I encourage you to take a moment or two before your attend or participate and view these opportunities as an investment not only for you and your company but an investment in our collective future. Our future . . . not just our future as an association or as an industry in this state but the future as a major segment of business that provides jobs, provides families with means to their futures, provides us and our employees with career paths and career choices, and provides us with professional relationships and even lifelong friendships. I want our association to really have a meaning for each and every one of our members. For example, during 2014, the association is working to recognize and thank the many past presidents of this association. I hope you will look for the article included in this newsletter on Mr. Eddie Buck (page 16). Our past presidents have donated and dedicated more time, energy, effort and resources than most can even imagine (unless you’re one of those past presidents). Together let’s try to make a positive difference each day, each event, each meeting, each opportunity, and each interaction with others. Let us all LEAD our companies, our association and industry forward and in a positive manner. I believe we all have the need...the need to lead!Thank you for your membership, your time and your investment in SCACS, in our programs and events, in our colleagues and members. I believe there is even a greater value to be gained when we view our future differently. Here’s to a prosperous new year!Sincerely,

Jack O’Malley SCACSPresident

Reflections from Mr. Eddie Buck, Sr. , 1992-93 SCACS President

At a meeting last year, board member and SCACS Past President Irvin Cauthen provided a short “history lesson” on SCACS and its humble beginnings. To say that the board was enwrapped with his stories and his memories would be an understatement. The lively exchange and the sincere appreciation of Mr. Cauthen’s comments caused us to want to learn more about the past presidents of SCACS and the history of the association. The following are some reflections from Mr. Eddie Buck, Sr. who served as SCACS President from 1992- 1993, as referenced by the appreciation plaque that hangs on his office wall today.

Mr. Buck’s venture into the convenience store business came at a time when he was busy growing his lumber company. As he recalls, he was working on Kiawah Island everyday at a point when there as a lot of development going on there. Allen Ball, the president of Kiawah Island at the time, was offered an opportunity to purchase the Kiawah General Store that was built and at that time run by a gentlemen named Crooms from Hilton Head Island. Mr. Crooms owned and operated

two convenience stores on Hilton Head, the one located in Palmetto Dunes and one other that are still in operation today. Ball wasn’t interested but he approached Mr. Buck, knowing he was looking for opportunities to diversify his business portfolio and asked if he was interested in purchasing the Kiawah General Store located at the front gate of Kiawah Island. Mr. Buck said “yes.” He purchased the store in 1982. The original store was a small operation and had

no walk-in cooler(s)(only stand-alone coolers). The same building also contained the security office for the island and a single bay for a small fire engine to service the island as well. Mr. Buck began expanding his first store by adding a walk-in fridge and a separate walk-in freezer for selling frozen foods since the nearest grocery store was 15 miles away. Mr. Buck also added a small deli operations offering fresh fried chicken, battered steak fries and later on pizza.

Mr. Buck learned about the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores from Crooms who told him that the annual convention was held on Hilton Head. Mr. Buck attended the convention where he met Ken Cosgrove, Sr., Dean Cline, Sr. and Hal Crenshaw. His first impressions were of the willingness, if not eagerness, of these men and others at the convention to share information, ideas and suggestions about this industry (of which Mr. Buck knew absolutely nothing about at the

time) and even their desire to see him be successful. Cosgrove, Cline and Crenshaw encouraged Mr. Buck to stay involved with the association, and that he did.

Having served in leadership in the state bankers’ association, Mr. Buck knew the importance of being involved in a trade organization. He was especially aware of the significance that an association has in representing an industry with legislators. In fact, Mr. Buck knew the role legislation played in the success and/or failure of many different businesses and industries. During his term in the SCACS leadership, Mr. Buck worked to persuade the association to move from using a part-time, low-level involvement lobbyist to hiring Ed Yarborough of McNair Law Firm to represent them. Also during his service to SCACS, Mr. Buck was able to get his friend, Governor Carol Campbell to come down to the SCACS convention and speak to the members.

As a SCACS leader, Mr. Buck stressed the importance of getting more people involved. As a result the association grew significantly.

As Mr. Buck reflects back on his service to SCACS and his leadership role, he says he feels his biggest accomplishment was to see SCACS take a much more active and stronger role in working the Legislature. Mr. Buck says he is proud that this focus continues today as one of the major strengths of the association.

And now you know. . . .a little more of the story.

Reflections continued on page 7.

Eddie Buck, Sr. was born July 23, 1941 at Wilmington, North Carolina.

In 1982, Eddie and Margaret entered the convenience store markets with their purchase of the Kiawah Island General Store. Today, Bluewater Convenience Stores is a growing business unit of 17 convenience stores, and a gasoline distribution service. Exxon Mobil awarded the firm with its “Leaders in Excellence” Award that recognizes its top U.S. distributors, as well as its “Best of the Best” Award for the cleanest stores in South Carolina. Bluewater was also recognized by the South Carolina Association of Convenience Stores as “Retailer of The Year.”

Eddie Buck Sr. now serves as the chairman of the board of Jupiter Holdings, the parent company of Buck Management and Buck Lumber Company. He continues to be very active in civic organizations and in counseling young entrepreneurs.

Mr. Buck is a member of the SC Business Hall of Fame.

SCACS Retail Member Greg Parker Named Entrepreneurial Business of the Year The Savannah Morning News honored Parker’s Convenience Stores with the 2013 Entrepreneurial Business of the Year award, a year-end recognition for local businesses that display growth and success in their philanthropic and community involvement endeavors.

Greg Parker, CEO of the Savannah-based c-store chain, opened his first store in 1975 and hasn’t looked back. The retailer is getting ready to open his 35th c-store in Vidalia in January “and has 17 more in the pipeline,” writes the news source, as part of an expansion plan that captures Parker’s long-term vision to become to a multi-billion-dollar company.

With an employee size of 400, Parker also emphasizes the importance of hiring the right people who will help grow the company. “We have great, competent people in roles, and we need to have a little more depth,” Parker said, adding that he’s planning to add in more key positions in the New Year.

Mr. Parker joined SCACS last year as he opened stores in South Carolina.

RETAIL DAY IS MOVING Earlier in the Month!

Please plan now to join us on April 10th, 2014, for our SCACS Legislative Breakfast.

This will be our second legislative breakfast, so please help us have a strong turnout of mem-bers. Breakfast starts at 8 am in the Blatt Building on the Statehouse Grounds. Directions will be provided. Retail Day activities will follow breakfast and you will be done by noon.

The 2014 legislative session will open on Tuesday, January 14. This will be the second year of a two-year session and the fourth year of Republican Governor Nikki Haley’s first term in office. The session year will likely be dominated by political gamesmanship between the two parties as Haley faces re-election along with all statewide officeholders, the state’s Congressional delegation and members of the SC House. State Senators were elected to four-year terms in 2012 and will not be up for re-election until 2016. Gubernatorial re-election campaigns only occur every four or eight years and almost always turn the legislative session into the political equivalent of a food fight. As a result, legislation is typically harder to pass in these years. Haley will square off again against State Senator Vincent Sheheen, whom she defeated by a 51% - 47% margin in 2010. Haley is favored to win re-election and South Carolina’s standing a GOP stronghold will not be altered in 2014. Against this political back-drop, the 2014 legislative session will be dominated by the state budget, efforts by Haley and her supporters to push for government restructuring and ethics reforms, as well as a continued push from the State Chamber and others for infrastructure and roads funding. The battle for roads money will include another push for an increase in the gas tax, which key legislative leaders oppose – and Gov. Haley has promised to veto. SCACS will again be front and center on this issue. Gov. Haley’s administration has promised to unveil their long-planned SNAP waiver application to the federal government before the session opens. Haley’s staff has indicated that the request will be greatly scaled back from what was originally proposed by DHEC Director Catherine Templeton. Another key issue for SCACS this session include efforts being undertaken by Attorney General Alan Wilson to re-impose the tobacco revenue stamp, which has long been opposed by our members. This legislation has not been introduced yet, but will be early in the session.

New SCACS Mentor Program/Welcome Committee

Want $50 Cash?To grow membership, we need help from everyone! We encourage you to use your influence to help us recruit your colleagues and customers. They know and trust you better . . . please help us help ourselves by growing the association in number and in quality industry players. We have $50 in cash to give to any member who recruits a retailer to join the association.

Thank you to J.T. Davenport, Southco, H.T. Hackney and M.R. Williams for allowing SCACS to attend and participate in their food shows. These shows (along with the Petro Show) are the best venues for SCACS staff and volunteers to “get in front” of the most non member retailers. If you will be attending one of these shows and would be willing to help staff in a SCACS membership booth for an hour or two, please let Leigh or Hannah know by calling SCACS Headquarters at 803-419-0804.

The Strategic Planning Committee has created a Mentor Program for 2014 and are calling it the Welcoming Committee. Here’s how it works: When a new member joins SCACS, staff is to send an e-mail blast to the Welcoming Committee members with this new member’s name and contact information. Based on territory/location, a committee member is to let SCACS staff know he or she agrees to be a Mentor for that person.

The Welcoming Committee members’ responsibilities of this program are to make contact and welcome the new members. SCACS Staff will provide the mentors with a short checklist of items to cover with the new member. Throughout the year, mentors are to contact their new member(s) and communicate with them about any upcoming events and ask them to attend. If the mentor attends an event where his or her mentee (new member) is also attending, the mentor will be asked to meet the mentee and introduce them to others at the event. The focus of this program is on making the most out the new member’s first year. The belief is if we can make the first year valuable, the following years memberships will come.

New supplier members will be paired up with long-term supplier member and new retailer members will be paired up with a long-term retail members.

If you would like to participate in this Mentor Program and be on the Welcoming Committee, please e-mail [email protected] and she will add your name to the e-mail blast and send you a discussion checklist.

Items on the checklist include: • Make contact by phone with your new member and welcome him/her to the association • Ask did they receive their membership packets • Invite them to any upcoming SCACS events • Ask them to participate in our scholarship and/or awards programs • Ask them why they joined the association? Did anyone recruit them? What are their expectations of the association? • Talk about why you are a member and what you receive out of SCACS • Give them your contact information • Let SCACS staff know that you have made contact with your new member

Jason Terry : Terry Environmental ServicesSUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT

Celebrating You

We are glad you were born; we want to help celebrate you!

Please let us know your birthday (no year needed)

e-mail [email protected] or call 803-419-0804

SCACS: Can you tell me a little about yourself and your what your company does?

My name is Jason Terry, I am a Professional Geologist, and I have been in the Environmental Consulting Industry helping Clients solve their environmental issues for over 23 years. Originally from Greenwood, SC and now live in Summerville, SC. Married to Adele Terry and two wonderful children; Jonathan (13) and Caroline (11).

SCACS: When and how did you get started with your company?

In 1996 I realized that every company I had worked for in the past, including the one I was employed with at the time, always focused on how much revenue we had for the past week or month and how much profit we had made. It struck me that these companies were focusing on the wrong thing. Instead we should be focusing on serving our Clients and solving their issues and the rest would fall into place. So….I made the leap and started TERRY Environmental Services, Inc. It is interesting to note that those companies are no longer in existence….but we are!

SCACS: What are the challenges you currently face in the industry?

Probably the same as with most industries…increasing costs, a tightening economy and constantly increasing government interference.

SCACS: What has been your biggest success? Well…there have been many. But I think the best part is to have built a company that cares about its Clients and its Employees. We are truly a family and enjoy working together.

SCACS: How did you become involved in SCACS?

Attended a conference and met several of the leaders and from that saw an opportunity to work with great people to better our industry.

SCACS: What is your advice to fellow SCACS members about working through the current economy?

Focus on service. On truly serving your Clients and putting their needs ahead of your own….ahead of the sale. From there you will build great relationships and great relationships always grow success!

SCACS: Why is SCACS membership important to you?

It has allowed me the opportunity to meet a great group of industry leaders and to work with those leaders for the betterment of our industry…and to also have fun while doing so!

Want retailers’ attention ???Advertise with SCACS.Full Page = $5001/2 Page = $250

E-mail SCACS your advertisement, and it will be included in the next newsletter for all members to see.

SCACS website has been undergoing some much needed “backend software” upgrades. We hope our efforts to improve the functionality of the site hasn’t caused you any inconvenience.

The site is back up and running!

There is a new password for all 2014 members, and it is listed on the front of your new member card that are sent out to renewed members in their membership packets. If you some reason you didn’t get yours, please let SCACS head-quarters know, and staff will be happy to e-mail you the new password.

SCACS staff has been updating the website with 2014 information and plans, so start watching out for SAVE THE DATES under Upcoming Events, new resource files under resources folder.

As the legislative session gets back underway, stay turned for updates in the Legislative Updates section. Also, registeration forms will be avail-able under the Event Registration Forms section. Again this year, new members will be listed on the website’s home page.

If you serve on the board or a committee, we will have separate folders for each where you can download documents that are used for your meetings. These pages have individual (differ-ent than the members only password) passwords and those will be forwarded to you directly and specifically based on areas of service.

We hope to provide all the information you need on www.scacs.org. We are open to making this site better for our members, so please feel free to send us your ideas and/or suggestions.
