    CAMP FACTS1O1

    Everyone can have a great timethis summer, but not at anothersexpense. All participants must followdirections and be respectful of fellowcampers, staff, property, and programboundaries. While each camp hasspecific policies for each session,there are common policies among allArlington camps. These policies weredeveloped to be sure all kids are safeand have the best opportunity for anenriching and fun summer.

    . Children must wear appropriateclothing and shoes for the campand its activities. Sandals are notallowed except on water days.

    . Children must bring theirlunch to full day camps.

    . Caregivers should pick up a calen-dar of activities on the first dayof each camp session on site.

    . Excess group insurance thatis above and beyond personalmedical insurance is availableto camp participants to covermedical expenses incurred as aresult of injusry at camp.

    . Behavior resulting in extremedisruption or intentional harmto self, others or property canresult in removal from the pro-gram according to the Code ofConduct Policy at the discretionof program staff. Camp and play-ground counselors are trainedto use supportive strategies andavailable resources to encouragepositive participation as alterna-tives to removal.

    . The Arlington County Boardapproves all Arlington Countycamp fees. The goal is to provideprograms for all County children.You may qualify for reduced feeseven in non-DPR camps. Call theRegistration Office for more infor-mation - - .

    . Camps with insufficientenrollment will be canceled.Registration staff will helpdirect families to comparableopen programs.

    . To keep kids safe, summer pro-grams will limit or cancel outdooractivities, or may even cancelprograms, on Code Red days.Camper safety is the decidingfactor..     Tot camp provides a fun, social environmentwhere preschoolers can thrive! Each session

    features an exciting theme to enchant your childthrough outdoor activities, water play, games, arts& crafts and special events. We are especially inter-ested in providing minutes a day of movementactivities. Field trips by bus are included at CarlinHall and Nottingham only. Field trips consist of onecamp traveling to another to share a performance orspecial event.     DESIGNATED INCLUSION SITES Individuals with disabilities are welcome to registerfor any summer camp in the catalog. Some childrenstill need lower ratios and more structure, which iswhere our Designated Sites come in. The threelocations this year are Madison and FairlingtonTot Camp, and Taylor Summerfest for elementaryages. Staff at these sites have a lower ratio, andreceive additional training on program modifica-tions and behavior management. Most staff comeswith previous experience working with camperswith disabilities. The camp focus is on increasingcampers awareness and comfort level interactingwith peers of all different abilities. Inclusion notonly benefits individuals with disabilities but hasmany positive benefits to all campers!

    ABRAKADOODLE: RAIDERS OFTHE LOST ART-FACTS CAMP Join Abrakadoodle as we set sail to search for trea-sures. We will explore the coastlines and islandsaround the world to learn about amazing works ofart and other surprises. We will visit Greece andItaly, create an Aboriginal style print, make anancient native totem pole and even make your ownclay treasure chest to stow away your treasures.Land ho!     VIRGINIA OUTSIDE KAYAK TOURINGAND FISHING CAMP Join Virginia Outside for an introduction to kayak-ing and kayak fishing. Our staff will instruct you onsafety, paddling and general maneuvering of a sit-on-top kayak. As you learn throughout the week at vari-ous locations we will incorporate fishing, sightseeingand touring while paddling on all types of water;from local lakes and rivers like Bull Run, Fountainheadand tidal creeks of the Potomac.     to days on lazy rivers that include the Shenandoah,Rappahannock, and Rapidan Rivers. A kayak is a greatway to get close to nature and we expect to see baldeagles, ospreys, herons, deer and beaver.     Every camper in DPR summer camps benefit from a healthy and active lifestyle. Regular physical activity controls weight, combats chealth conditions and diseases, improves mood, boosts energy, and promotes better sleep. Our recreation programs strive to providean opportunity for each camper to get the exercise they need to sustain a healthy life. We integrate at least minutes of moderate tovigorous exercise into DPR summer camps through interactive sports and games run by our staff.It is our goal to provide an environment where campers are able to increase their aerobic capacity, muscular strength, and overall phycal fitness through fun and challenging activities. In order to provide safe opportunities for physical activity, it is imperative that yourcamper wear tennis shoes that fit properly. Laces or Velcro must be tied snuggly on the campers foot. Loose shoes or Heelys are not for physical activities. Socks should also be worn. Campers wearing inappropriate footwear will be unable to fully participate for theiown safety.     ETC: ACTING OUT CAMPSHave a blast acting out on the stage! Campers willgain and strengthen tools for creating characters,stories, and wacky scenarios for the stage. Pick yourweek based on your favorite inspiration for creatinga theatre piece, as each week offers a new creativelens for campers to use. Or take all three for a well-rounded theatre experience! Whether the focus is onbringing characters to life, developing scripts throughimprovisation, or creating our own scripted storiesfor the stage, Acting Out teaches campers how todevelop theatre in different ways. Character develop-ment, playwriting, improvisation, ensemble work andstrengthening performance skills are just some of theactivities campers will master.
