TheD20GirlsProjectisanon-profitorganizationthatcombatsthenegativeportrayalofwomeningeekculturebyempoweringwomenwhoidentifyasfansofvariousgeekandnerdindustries.TheProjectiscommittedtocreatingopportunitiesforwomenandstrengtheningthenerdcommunityasawhole.

WE FOCUS ON FOUR KEY PURPOSES:

1. Support NetworkToPromote,supportandempowerwomenwhoidentifyasfansofvariousnerdindustries.2. Community OutreachTostrengthenthegeekandnerdcommunityasawholethroughvolunteerwork,communityoutreachevents,andcross-promotion.

3. Public PerceptionTohumanizefemalegeeksandnerdsbycounteringnegativestereotypesandunrealisticportrayalsofwomeningeekculture.

4. Personal DevelopmentToopendoorsforouractivegirlspersonallyandprofessionally,offeringlearningopportunitiesandexperienceinvariousfield.

Whilewedohopetobeabletoprovideyoungnerdgirlswithpositiverolemodels,andoftenholdfamilyfriendlyevents,wearenotanorganizationforchildrenandnotallofoureventsareappropriateforminors.ToapplyforTheD20GirlsProjectyoumustbeatleast18yearsofage.Wedoofferamentorprogram,which

allowsgirlswhoareatleast16toapplywithparentalconsent.Theywillthenbepairedwithamentorandallowedtoattendappropriateeventswithus.

WhenIfirstputmythemetogether,Icharacterizedmyselfasanever-newb.Acuriouscollusionofcataclysmichappeningsandpersonalcircumstanceshasledmetoleadingalifethatisquiteuniquelycommon.Iamallowedtoclaimthisspecialparadoixcalprivilege,onthepremisethatsinceeveryoneisunique...nooneis.Itisthesameconflictthateveryhumanfaces:beingjustsmartenoughtorealizeboththeproblemsofthehumanconditionANDourcompleteinabilitytodoanythingaboutit.Notto

mentionthathumanbeings,whoarealmostunique

inhavingtheabilitytolearnfromtheexperienceofothers,arealsoremarkablefortheirapparent

disinclinationtodoso.

So,ofcourseyou’vegottodosomething.Andthat’showyouenduplayingdowninfrontofthetwotonmachineabouttoknockdownyourhouse.Thehardlessonisthatevenifyousaveyourhouse,someoneisboundtoblowupyourplanet,alloverapaperworkerrorandanapatheticcitycouncilthatinsistsonbuildingabypassthatnoonereallywants.

Perhapstheincompetenceofhumansiswhysomanypeopleturntoreligion,or,thestructuredbeliefthatwhatishappeningisultimatelySomebodyElse’sFault.Whateveryourreligion,whetheritbeadustyoldonethatyoukeeponatopshelfinthegarageoranewshinymodelthatyoujustgotandinsistonshowingallofyourfriends,itisn’treallyhelping.Onthetopicofreligion,sufficetosay:inthebeginningthe

Universewascreated.Thishasmadealotofpeopleveryangryandbeenwidelyregardedasabadmove.

Whatspecificallysetsthe$30GoldiBloxapartfromtoyslikeLincolnLogs,TinkerToysortheclassicErectorSetisthepurposefulintroductionofthebasicprinciplesofengineeringcontainedwithineachstory:thegirl(aimedatthe5-9yearset)readsthestoryandbuildsalongwithGoldie,learningabout

Walls.Thereislittletohopeforinwhat’sleftoftheworld,otherthanthewalls.Thick,stone,solidwalls.Outinthedesert,theylieinwait.Waitingforthewallstocrumbleinthehotwind.Peoplecowerbehindthewalls,knowingthatthesafetytheyprovideonlyservestostaveofftheinevitable.

Wearebeaten.Thosewhoremainsimplywaitforthedeaththatlurksintheshadows.Thewallsarecrumbling,grainsofsandshearingoffinthewindsandswirlingawaytorejoiningtheirfellowsinthedunes.Itisonlyamatteroftime.Thosewhowaitwillkillusall,ifwedon’tfirstdestroyourselveshere,inthislastbastionofwhatusedtoclaimtobehumanity.Evennow,peoplekilloneanotherinthestonystreetsovercrustsfbread,ortheratsthattriedtomakeoffwiththem.Thereisnohopeinonlookingeyes.Everyoneknowsthatnexttime,itcouldbethem.Killerorvictim,itmakesnodifference.Livinghasnomeaning,andthosewhothinksitdoesareinsane.

Downasun-beatenlane,peddlershopelesslyhawkgoods,preciousjewels,heavygoldenchains,finesilksthatholdnoworthnow.Trinketscannotfeedastarvingmouth,andthepricesoffigsandnutsaretoohigh.Peoplewrappedinragslieagainstthethicksandstonewallshere,skinstretchedtightovertoo-prominentbones,waitingfordeathtotakethem,indistinguishablefromthosewhohavehadthatlastdesireanswered.

Huddledagainstawall,aglassblowercringes,hisshirt

almostblindinginitswhiteness,asharpcontrasttothefilthanddecayofhissurroundings.Cody.Avoicewhispersinhismind,echoesofapasthecannotremember.Cody.Yes.Thatwashisname,once.Cody, get up.Whatwasthepoint?Therewasnogettingaway,noescape.“Noescape,”thewordspassedcrackedlips,voiceastrangledtearingofsound,dryandbrokenfromlackofuse.Howlonghaditbeensincehe’dspoken?“Noescape.”

Aclinking,andsun-searedeyessearchedoutthesourceofthesound.Themanknewhewasmad,hismutteringstothevoiceonlyservedtoproveit,sotheimageinfrontofhimheldnosurprise.Aperfectsliceofwatermelon,rubyredandglistening,beckonedtohim.Mouthachingfromtheinabilitytoproducesaliva,themanshookhishead.Justanotherhallucination.Theycamemorefrequentlynow,luringhimdeeperintohisownnightmares.Closinghiseyes,heleanedbackagainstthewall,sandscrapingandbouncingoffhisbackonitswaytotheground.No, Cody. You have to get up.Whywouldn’tthevoiceleavehimalone?Wasitnotbadenoughthathewasdyingaloneinthissqualor?Openingawearyeye,hesighed.Thefruitwasstillthere,sunsparklingoffofthedrippingliquidlikediamonds.

“You’dbesteatit,boy,”themanleanedoutasquareholethathadbeencarvedfromthelineofbuildings,allthesamestoneasthewalls.Heleeredattheglassblower,goldentoothgleaming,thengesturedtowardthemelon.“They’llkillyouforit,youknow.”

No! Don’t do it!Thevoicetookonatoneofcommandashelookedatit.Headshaking,hepushedhimselffromthewall.“Notreal,”hemumbledasthewindwhippedtendrilsofsandoverthewallfromthewaitingdesert.Thescentofthefruit,juicyandcleanandsweet,rodethewindaswell,fillinghissensesevenashedeniedit.Withoutthought,helurchedtowardit.NO!Unseeing,hishandsfoundthefruitandheraiseditbeforehim.Thisclose,thediamondswereliquidrubies,theredmeatshiningthroughthedroplets.Throughthehole,theman’seyesshonewithgreedashewatched.Don’t do it, Cody! Stop!No,notgreet...excitement.Expectation.Themanpaidhimaslittlemindasthevoice,thepulloftherednessinfrontofhimtoomuchtoresist.Heliftedittohislips,rubywaterdrippinglikebloodashebitdown.NOOOOooooo! Thevoicefledasthewindhowledoverthewall,carryinggold-tooth’svictoriouscacklethroughoutthecity.
