PENTECOST SUNDAY is also referred to AS SUNDAY OF THE HOLY TRINITY orSUNDAY OF THE DESCENT OF THE HOLY SPIRIT, and is one of the Great
Feasts of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which is celebrated 50
DAYS AFTER HOLY PASC HAand therefore always falls on a Sunday.Fifty days after the Resurrection of
our Lord and Saviour, Jesus
Christ, on the Jewish Feast ofPentecost, while the Disciples
and the Apostles, as well asmany other followers of Christwere gathered together to
pray, God the Holy Spiritdescended upon them in the
form of ...cloven tongues of
Fire... with the sound of aMighty Rushing Wind, and theyall began to speak in different
languages that were foreign tothem.
Many Hebrews had gathered from
all over the known world inJerusalem at that time to
celebrate the Great Feast of Pentecost, and, having been drawnto where the Apostles and Disciples of Christ had gathered, theywere astonished to hear the illiterate Fishermen and the other
Disciples of Christ praising Almighty God in all the differentlanguages of the world so that EACH NATIONALITY WAS CLEARLY ABLE TO
UNDERSTAND EVERY WORD THEY SPOKE.
This amazing Event was written in detail by St Luke in his Book of theAct s o f t he A pos tle s, C hap ter 2.
The number 50 as in the 50 th day after Holy Pascha symbolisesEternal, Heavenly Fulfilment i.e. seven times seven, plus one.
The Eastern Orthodox Church regards Pentecost as THE FINALFULFILLMENT OF THE DIVINE MISSION OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST - and the
beginning of the Messianic Age of the Kingdom of God, which is
Mystically Present in His Church. (In fact, the Messianic Age beganmuch earlier with the conception and birth of our Lady Theotokos
the Mother of God Incarnate.)
PENTECOST SUNDAY WAS THE BEGINNING OF THE ONE , HOL Y, CATH OL IC AN DAPOSTOLIC CHURCH OF CHRIST.
Besides celebrating the Descent of the Holy Spirit, the Feast of
Pentecost also celebrates THE FULL REVELATION OF THE HOLY TRINITY GOD THE FAT HE R, GOD THE SON ,AND GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT.
The Hymns celebrate the Sign of THE FINALACT OFALMIGHTY GOD S SELF -
DISCLOSURE TO THE WORLD OF H IS CREATION AND THE DIVINE REVELATION OFTHE PURPOSE OF HIS DIVINE PLA N.

To Orthodox Christians, the Feast of Pentecost is not just a
celebration of an Event in history. It is also A CEL EBR ATI ON OU RMEMBERSHIP IN THE CHURCH OF CHRIST, for we have lived Pentecost
and we have received "...the Seal of the Gift of the Holy
Spirit..." during the Holy Mystery of Baptism and Chrismation. For the Feast of Pentecost the Icon of the Holy Trinity, the three
Ang elic Beings who appe ared to Ab raham, is placed in thecentre of the Soleas for veneration, and is presented togetherwith the traditional Pentecost Icon.
The church is decorated with flowers and green leaves to show that
GOD 'S DIVINE BREATH COMES TO RENEW ALL CREATION. Green Vestmentsand coverings are also used.
In many Parishes the Feast is celebrated the evening before with theHoly Service of Great Vespers, followed by Matins and Divine
Liturgy on Pentecost Sunday Morning. The Liturgy of St John Chrysostom has Festal Hymns that replace the
standard verses of the Antiphons.
The Hymns O Heavenly King...and We have seen the True Light...are sung for the first time since Pascha, calling the Holy Spiritto "...come and abide in us," and proclaiming that "...we have
received the Heavenly Spirit."An ext rao rdin ary Ser vice cal led the Kneeling Vespers is observed
on the evenig of Pentecost - to which are added three sets of
long poetical Prayers, composed by St Basil the Great, duringwhich everyone makes a full Prostration, touching their foreheads
to the floor (Prostrations in Church having been forbidden from
the day of Great and Holy Pascha up to this point). In many Parishes, however, THE KNEELING VESPERS IS DONE IMMEDIATELY
AFT ER TH E D IVINE LITURGY OF PENTECOST.THE FEAST OF THE HOLY SPIRIT IS CELEBRATED ON MONDAY AFTER PENTECOST

Great Feast of Pentecost.
Until the start of the next Great Lent, THE SUNDAYS AND WEEKS FOLLOWINGPENTECOST,ARE NUMBERED FROM PENTECOST SUNDAY.
