Records indicate that Swift Creek Mill was in existence as early as 1663. It is believed to be the oldest grist mill in this country. Henry Randolph I, born in Little Houghton, Northamptonshire, England, migrated to this country about 1640. In 1655, he acquired a large tract of land in Bermuda Hundred on Swift Creek where he erected the present mill.

An heir of Henry Randolph I, William Bland Randolph, deeded the mill to William Rowlett on February 20, 1805, and it became known as Rowlett’s Mill. In 1852, the Rowlett heirs conveyed the mill to the Swift Creek Manufacturing Company.

On May 9th and 10th, 1864, a battle was fought around the mill while General B.F. Butler’s Army of the James attempted to cross Swift Creek. Following the Civil War, the property became Schmidt’s Distillery, making corn whiskey. Following this, the property changed hands several times, was operated as a grist mill and became known in 1929 as Swift Creek Mill. It continued to operate as a grist mill until about 1956.

On December 2, 1965, Swift Creek Mill Playhouse opened its doors. To convert the old grist mill into a dinner theater required an addition to the three story building to house the kitchen, dressing rooms and restrooms. Stairways were built leading to upper and lower dining levels, and to the theatre located on the top floor. Much of the old equipment in the mill was refurbished to lend a rustic atmosphere.

Swift Creek Mill has been preserved as both an historical landmark and cultural outlet for the talent of local artists, skilled actors, directors, designers and technicians whose efforts have made possible the artistic achievements of the Mill. The 300 year old Swift Creek Mill has been made a Virginia Historical Landmark and has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

As of fall 2013, Swift Creek Mill is now ADA-compliant, offering increased access and services to persons with disabilities. A monumental task, the renovations were completed following precise guidelines, and the iconic structure continues to retain its historic value and status.

Which Children Does The Mill Serve?Swift Creek Mill Theatre currently serves the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as Southside Virginia. The Mill is a popular field trip destination, with students attending from public schools, private schools, preschools and home school groups. Families attend the program as well, especially for Drifty the Snowman plays, which are new every year. On average, 15,000 children from Central- and Southside Virginia rely on Swift Creek Mill for theatre arts education. According to the Virginia Department of Education, 42% of the public school kids that we serve are economically disadvantaged and 54% belong to one or more minorities. In addition, more than 23,000 of these children live with disabilities. Some of these students may never experience professional performing arts - or the educational value of theatre - without a field trip to the Mill.

What Does The Mill Offer?Swift Creek Mill Children’s Theatre has offered educational shows for children for 25 years! The Mill offers three or more Youth Series productions annually during the school year (this season will include five!) Each Youth Series play is selected based on its theatrical, literary and/or educational value, and many are professionally written for the Mill, supporting students' core subjects. The directors, cast and crew are theatre professionals who live in the surrounding areas, and the plays are produced, directed and performed at Swift Creek Mill in order to offer an immersive theatre experience. We state relevant Standards of Learning information and grade level suggestions for the convenience of educators. There is even a character meet-and-greet or Q&A session after each performance that gives kids an opportunity for more in-depth knowledge of professional theatre arts.

Why Are These Field Trips Important?In addition to reaching young students in Chesterfield, Henrico, Hanover and the Tri-Cities, we are helping to educate kids in areas farther away from Richmond, which are reachable because of Swift Creek Mill’s uniquely excellent location – counties like Dinwiddie, Southampton, Nottoway, Mecklenburg and others. The Mill is the only professional theatre in a 75-mile stretch from the James River south to the Virginia state line. East to west this area is almost 200 miles. Therefore, Swift Creek Mill is helping literally thousands of children in underserved areas to have a more well-rounded and innovative education. Even for the children who are able to come only once, it is an experience that expands their horizons and a memory that lasts a lifetime.

We were very fortunate when Ted Swindley, author of “Always…Patsy Cline” and “Honky-Tonk Angels” (both of which had been produced here at the Mill) approached us about producing the world premiere of his latest script: “The Honky-Tonk Angels Holiday Spectacular”. That was in 2002; and our team was ready and eager to take on the task.

Director Tom Width (Me!) and Musical Director Paul Deiss went to work from Ted Swindley’s pages to create a huge hit for the Mill!

As we prepared to do this show again here in 2014, I had to keep reminding myself that all of these wonderful vocal and orchestral arrangements were created right here at the Mill by the stunningly talented Paul Deiss, and that our “angels” were the first to say these lines and sing this music, that has since delighted audiences across the country.

So we say “Welcome Home” to “The Honky-Tonk Angels Holiday Spectacular”! We’ve missed you!

RoBIn ARTHUR (Sue Ellen) has been working as a dancer, actor, director, choreographer, and teacher for… well, for longer than she’d like to admit! Performance credits include: Honky Tonk Angels, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Death of a Salesman, and The Clean House. Direction and choreography credits include: Shrek, Honk, Into the Woods, Seussical the Musical, and Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. A graduate of North Carolina State University, Robin also currently teaches dance and math for the Orchard House School.KATRInAH CARoL LEWIS (Charilee) is blissfully fulfilling her dream of acting and singing her life away and is delighted to be back at the Mill working with Tom and Paul and these amazingly talented women! Past Swift Creek Mill credits include: The Marvelous Wonderettes, The Winter Wonderettes, Once on this Island, Once Upon a Mattress, A Dash of Rosemary, Sideshow and several shows in the Youth Series, including having the honor of playing Miss Candy Cane in the 2009 Drifty show! Katrinah has a BFA in Theatre from VCU and studied Voice at the Levine School of Music in Washington DC. Other favorites credits include: The Color Purple with Virginia Rep (RTCC Award- Best Musical 2014); Death and the Maiden with Henley Street/Richmond Shakespeare (RTCC Nomination-Best Actress 2014); Good People with Cadence Theatre; Gidion’s Knot at HATTheatre with Carol Piersol (RTCC Award - Best Ensemble Acting 2013); Race with Carol Piersol; Ohio State Murders (RTCC Nomination -Best Actress 2012) and Dessa Rose (RTCC Award- People’s Choice 2012) with Firehouse Theatre. Namaste.RoBYn o’nEILL (Angela) is just tickled to death to be reunited with three of her favorite gals (and Tom and Paul, too!) here at the Honky Tonk Heaven! Favorite roles include Annie Oakley in Annie Get Your Gun, Reno Sweeney in Anything Goes, the Witch in Into the Woods, and Sally Brown in You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown at Virginia Rep; Eve/Mama Noah in Children of Eden, Martha in The Secret Garden, Daisy Hilton in Side Show, and Nellie Collins in Floyd Collins here at Swift Creek Mill; and Dot/Marie in Sunday in the Park with George at Dogwood Dell. Robyn has had the privilege of appearing as a soloist with the Richmond Symphony, and was the 2005 recipient of Richmond Magazine's Theresa Pollak Award. Her previous Mill roles include Penelope Pennywise in Urinetown, for which she received the Richmond Theatre Critics Circle award, and Patsy Cline in Always, Patsy Cline, for which she received the Richmond Times-Dispatch's Phoebe award and the Theresa Pollak Prize from Richmond Magazine. She has also appeared at the Mill as Sister Mary Amnesia in Nunsense, Yonah in Children of Eden, and Cinderella in Into the Woods. Other favorite roles include Rona Lisa Peretti in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Florence Foster Jenkins in Souvenir, and the title role in Violet with Virginia Rep. She sends love to her husband Joe Pabst, and to her parents Janet and Mickey Wagoner.

ted swindley biograPhy

TED SWInDLEY has directed and/or produced over 200 plays for over 20 years. Some of his outstanding directorial credits include world premieres, classics and musicals including, Carnal Knowledge, Pacific Overtures, Follies, and Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, along with rotating repertory projects such as Havel's The Memorandum with Giradoux's The Madwoman Of Chaillot, Thornton Wilder's Our Town and Les Liaisons Dangereuses with The Imprtance Of Being Earnest. Ted was named Esquire magazine's register of Americans for Outstanding Achievement in Arts and Letters, and was featured in Southern Living Magazine. In 2007 he was a keynote speaker at the Southwestern Theatre Conference. He was also the recipient of the Los Angeles Dramalogue Award for outstanding direction and nominated for the Los Angeles Critics Award for his work at the Pasadena Playhouse. He is the Founding Artistic Director of Stages Repertory Theatre, the second largest theatre in Houston, Texas. There he implemented such diverse programming as the Texas Playwrights Festival, for which he won national recognition in 1986 from the Wall Street Journal and Backstage Magazine. Best known for creating the hit musical, Always…Patsy Cline, which was one of the top ten shows produced across the country in 1998, he has also director in over 60 theatres. The Honky Tonk Angels is his latest hit, and he has complete the trilogy with The Honky Tonk Angels Holiday Spectacular, and Bubba's Revenge, (which all can be done independently of each other). He has just recently premiered his latest work, Bachelor Pad in New York City, and completed a Southern adaptation of The Importance Of Being Earnest, entitled The Importance Of Bein' Earnest, and a play, Stories My Grandmother Told Me which had it's premiere in Kansas City, MO, January 2008. He is an active member of the Dramatists Guild and The Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, and is a member of the Playwrights/Directors Workshop at the famed Actors Studio in New York City. His latest show is Becoming Kinky: The World According to Kinky Friedman.

Do You Wanna Build a Snowman? YES.

Once upon a time at Swift Creek Mill... the year was 1989, and the playhouse launched its first official holiday kids show. The community loved the idea, and a tradition was born. As the years passed, the annual show grew and flourished and included an array of colorful characters. There were Betty Bear, Santa and Mrs. Claus, Pepita the Elf, Cowboy Jim, Max Von Strudel, Betsy the Cow, Miss Candy Cane and many more fun personalities that entertained (and enlightened) children during the holiday season. But perhaps the most notable, and most beloved, character is Drifty the Snowman, who continues to delight entire families with his annual appearances.This childlike snowman loves to learn something new, as he makes friends and goes on adventures. Drifty is silly. And fun. And, well... "drifty" at times. This magical North Pole snowman has been played by actress Joy Williams since his first appearance in 1991, and no one could portray the same sentient-snow-inspired persona as Joy. Drifty is full of the innocence and playfulness that reminds us of what our own lives were like as kids, when our world was new and anything was possible.Maybe that's why he returns every year to bring us new joy (no pun intended.)

From school field trips to families, the holiday play featuring Drifty is always the highlight of the Swift Creek Mill Youth Series. In the beginning, the

snowman character was part of shows featuring Betty Bear, w r i t t en by Ron Barnett. In 1993, the snowman became

the main character in a play entitled Allison's Christmas at Home, written by Holly Gems Timberline and Paul Deiss. 1996 was the first

year the play was written solely by Paul Deiss, and it was also the year that introduced Drifty's

friend Cowboy Jim. Paul continues to create new plays and music for Drifty every year, complete with unique guest stars and new story lines. And Drifty

remains the lovable and dependable icon that the community has embraced.Traditions as a whole are underrated. It seems

many of them too often fade away into our busy lifestyles. Why can't there be

something that stays the same? While we can't promise that time will stand still, we can say that there are no plans for Drifty to

go anywhere, and we invite you to celebrate in this local tradition with us. Do YOU wanna build a snowman? Until the flakes fall, come enjoy ours instead.
