The University of Connecticut lacrosse program plays its home games at the George J. Sherman Family-Sports Complex, a $3.7 million athletic facility located adjacent to Harry A. Gampel Pavilion in the heart of UConn’s main campus in Storrs. The 2007 season marked the first year that the Huskies played all their games on the turf, after years of splitting time at the grass field in Joseph J. Morrone Stadium. A financial gift of more than $650,000 to UConn’s Athletic Development Fund by Lottie K. Sherman of West Hartford helped provide the necessary funding for the project. The entire complex bears the name of Lottie K. Sherman’s husband, George J. Sherman. Opened during the 1995-96 academic year, the George J. Sherman Family Sports Complex features a new Astroturf 12 field and watering system that was installed during the summer of 2008. The new surface gives UConn lacrosse and field hockey programs one of the finest on-campus collegiate facilities in the nation. The complex also includes an eight-lane, 400-meter all-weather track surface, as well as seating for 2,000 fans, full-field lighting to permit night games, a press box and a scoreboard with electronic message capabilities. Before the start of the 2010 season the lacrosse locker room in the Hugh S. Greer Field House was renovated, giving each student-athlete their own locker with enclosed storage spaces.

Thanks to alumnus Mark R. Shenkman, the University of Connecticut has joined the ranks of major universities nationwide with an indoor training facility that is utilized by all the varsity sport teams and also by recreational services.

The 85,000 square foot Mark R. Shenkman Training Center is one of the most modern facilities of its kind in the country. Featuring a 120-yard long state-of-the-art FieldTurf playing surface, an 18,000 square foot strength and conditioning area and state-of-the-art video capabilities, the indoor

training center provides all the varsity teams with the most technologically advanced training equipment.

The UConn lacrosse team has the use of two different weight rooms in Gampel Pavilion along with the Field House Weight Room. All of the facilities feature custom made multi-use racks with platforms, dumb-bell racks, cable machines and various Cybex Machines.

The Huskies were one of 15 teams to raise $42,000 in the 2nd Annual Nick Colleluori Women’s La-crosse Classic which took place at Hofstra University on September 25, 2010. The tournament helps

bring awareness to the HEADStrong Foundation which is committed to finding a cure for all blood can-cers and supporting those who are affected by the disease. The foundation is dedicated to its founder Nicholas Colleluori and was started in 2005, with the foundation’s primary color of lime green being

used to represent non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Friends Of Jaclyn

The University of Connecticut lacrosse team strives to consistently make a positive impact off the field and outside of the classroom, contributing to several community organizations.

Following the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. in December 2012, UConn spent a day in January with the youth la-crosse programs.

Different community service initiatives that the Huskies participate in throughout the year include Nutmeg Big Brothers-Big Sisters, teaching children around Connecticut about lacrosse, and volunteer-ing for Husky Sport, a program to promote physical fitness and good nutrition. As part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee the lacrosse team also sponsors a variety of collection drives for food, toys and coats to support charities in the local area.

Husky Reach

UConn once again participated in a Friends of Jaclyn event, competing in the FOJ Playday that was held back

in October. The Friends of Jaclyn Foundation is a non-profit, charitable organization that works to improve the life of children suffering from pediatric brain tumors and their families, while also helping raise funds for research.

Lapham also went on to earn All-BIG EAST First Team honors and was later selected to the IWLCA All-Region First Team.

Karger joins the Connecticut coaching staff after a record-breaking season at CCSU of the Northeast Conference in which the Blue Devils set or tied pro-gram marks for the most conference wins, best home record and the best record in program history. Karger was instrumental in guiding CCSU’s Erin DeLancey to NEC Goalkeeper of the Year honors in 2012. The CCSU coaching staff was also honored this past season as head coach Kelly Nangle was named NEC Coach of the Year. Prior to her one season at Central Connecticut, Karger spent a year at Division III Connecticut College, the prestigious liberal arts school in New London, Conn. Karger worked in all aspects of the program, while directly overseeing the defense and goalkeepers. Under the guidance of Karger, four student-athletes garnered Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Region Honors in 2011. During her previous coaching stint at Mount St. Mary’s from 2008-2010, she worked primarily with the defenders and goalkeepers. Over her two years at Mount St. Mary’s, eight student-athletes earned All-NEC honors, including five on the first team. The Mountaineers also boasted the 2009 NEC Defensive Player of the Year. As a goalkeeper at Mount St. Mary’s, Karger finished second all-time in minutes played and fourth in career saves. Her team reached the conference tournament in each of her seasons. In addition, the Mountaineers captured the 2005 NEC Championship and the ac-companying NCAA Tournament berth. They won two NEC Regular Season titles (2005 and 2007) and advanced to the championship game twice. Individually, Karger earned a NEC All-Tournament selection, a NEC Academic Honor Roll selection and was invited to the North/South Division I All-Star Game following her senior season in 2008. She served as team captain in both her junior and senior years.

Fourteen members of the 2012 Connecticut lacrosse squad were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic team including 10 current members of the 20123roster. In addition to the team’s individual academic accolades, the women’s lacrosse team has been honored seven times by the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) as an IWLCA Academic Squad. To earn the distinction, the team must have earned greater than a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average (GPA). Kristen Haldeman concluded her Connecticut career in 2005 as the IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The senior goalie graduated with a 3.92 GPA in biomedical engineering following her first season in the starting lineup to earn the honor. Twenty-eight UConn lacrosse juniors and seniors have also been individually recognized by the IWLCA as Academic All-Americans since 2002, earning a GPA of 3.5 or better. Below is a list of Lacrosse student-athletes who have been named to the UConn Dean’s List or those that have earned a 3.0 GPA or better during the semester.

“Attending UConn and being a member of the women’s lacrosse team was truly an opportunity that I will always be grateful for. I am thankful for all the experiences I had over the years and have met some truly amazing people. Reflecting on my time at UConn, it is a special and rewarding group to be a part of; one that has left an imprint on me as I move onto the next phase of life. Through thick and thin, my experience was one of constant growth and has prepared me for all to come. The perspective I have now, leaves me even more appreciative of those who supported, encouraged and believed in me at UConn From teammates and coaches to classmates and friends, being a Husky is something I will always cherish!”

Ashley Mitchelides - 2010

“Competing against some of the top teams in the nation, building enduring friendships, being challenged to handle adversity and having the opportu-nity to be a part of the BIG EAST conference all contributed to making my experience at Connecticut exciting and unforgettable. I was fortunate to learn from and play under head coach Angela McMahon for my last year at UConn. Coach McMahon took over the team and instilled expectations of: conditioning, discipline, dedication, and hard work. I truly believe she will build this program into a top 20 team in a few years.”

Whitney Michele - 2009

“Being a member of the lacrosse team has, without a doubt, left its mark on me in a lot of remarkable ways, and I consider myself very lucky to have gotten to experience college the way I did for four years. It’s not easy, and I think any athlete will testify to that…but it’s worth it. You get to learn more about yourself and life than you could any other way. And, ultimately, you walk away a much stronger person than when you walked in. You are a member of a team and you get to create friendships in a way that very few other people understand. Your teammates are there at 5 a.m. conditioning, they are there on Friday nights, they are there when the whistle blows…and when all of that ends, you know they would be right there for you if you needed them.

tori Joel - 2007

“During my time with the UConn lacrosse team, I experienced many different things - the joy that comes with winning big games, the disappointment of a heartbreaking loss or the pain of an injury and hard workouts. Now, looking back, all I feel is the tremendous pride that goes along with being able to say that I played for the University of Connecticut. This program provides so much more than caring coaches, supportive teammates and an opportunity to play at the highest level. These people become your family and I know that I would not be the person I am today had I not met them.”

Kristen hAldeMAn - 2006

“My experience as an athlete at UConn gave me a sense of purpose and a sense of place in Storrs. You feel a sense of pride when you put on that blue and white jersey which represents so much more than yourself. Be-ing a part of the UConn lacrosse family sculpted me into the person I am today. Although I had my ups and downs throughout my lacrosse career, I knew there were always 24 other people who understood me. They know what you have been through and they stand by your side. I now have the opportunity to coach and I strive to get my players to understand the true meaning of the word ‘team.’ I try and teach them what I have learned through my own experiences, that your jersey is much more than a shirt, that the people you play with are much more than teammates, that the hour long battles are much more than games.”

The 2012-13 academic year is the 34th in the history of The BIG EAST Conference as the unique consortium marches on competing at the highest level with integrity and sportsmanship.

The BIG EAST has gone through membership changes since its birth and continues to make strides in improving the quality and depth of the storied league.

The BIG EAST Conference has been always been driven by lofty goals. The outstanding performances of the student-athletes at BIG EAST schools are evidence of the league’s proud tradition of success. The league has always been able to boast that many of its best students are also its best athletes. The 2011-12 year was no di₧erent.

In the athletic arena, BIG EAST student-athletes again enjoyed success on the national stage. The Georgetown womenõs cross country team captured its ₨rst NCAA Champi-onship. The win by the Hoyas marked the third-straight year a BIG EAST team has won the women’s cross country championship, with Villanova winning the past two. The Louisville men’s basketball team advanced to the Final Four in New Orleans. Connecticut ₨eld hockey reached the NCAA semi₨nals, as did the Notre Dame menõs lacrosse team. The Irish women’s basketball team and Syracuse women’s lacrosse team each reached the NCAA ₨nals. USF softball reached the Womenõs College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla., for the ₨rst time in program history.

The BIG EAST placed two teams in the NCAA Women’s Final Four for the third time in the last four years as Connecticut joined Notre Dame in Denver, with the Fighting Irish advancing to the national title game for the second-straight year.

BIG EAST student-athletes won four NCAA championships. Sheila Reid won her second-straight NCAA Women’s Cross Country title. Syracuse hurdler Jarret Eaton won the 60-meter hurdle championship in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. Notre Dame won the distance medley relay at the same championship. Georgetown’s Emily Infeld won the 3,000-meter run.

BIG EAST football maintained its national pro₨le as a competitively balanced group. Three BIG EAST teams won bowl games, while the BIG EAST representative in the Bowl Championship Series won its bowl game for the fourth time in the last seven years- a streak that includes wins against the ACC, Big 12 and SEC champions.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largest Division I-A conference in 2005-06 when ₨ve new members began competing ð the University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, the University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in 18 of the nation’s top 50 largest media markets, includ-ing New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Cincinnati and Milwaukee. With its newest members, BIG EAST markets contain more than one-fourth of all television households in the U.S. The BIG EAST will welcome UCF, Houston, Memphis, SMU and Temple in all sports in 2013-14. Temple football will join the league in 2012, with Boise State and San Diego State joining the following year and Navy in 2015.

The University of Connecticut is committed to each of its student-athletes as a total person. Participation in athletics is important, but it represents only one aspect of an individual’s college experience. At the University of Connecticut, academic achievement is a prime concern. Impressively, for the past four years, the Connecticut student-athlete academic retention rate has been 99.0 percent. The University’s commitment to the student-athlete

is a dual one. Athletic participation is not viewed as an obstacle to the attainment of one’s educational goals, rather it is seen as a complimentary activity. Each supports the other. Athletic excellence is stressed, but academic achievement is never compromised - indeed, it is given the utmost priority. The University realizes that student-athletes, due to their academic involvement, are required to commit a large percentage of their time to University sponsored athletic activities. For this reason, the University recognizes the need for a support program for intercollegiate athletes. The Counseling Program for Intercollegiate Athletes (CPIA) assists the athletes in achieving their academic goals. The CPIA staff serves as liaison to the academic faculty and to the Division of Athletics. CPIA was established in 1986 to provide comprehensive academic support to all UConn student-athletes. CPIA’s staff includes a director, eight full-time counselors, three graduate assistants and a large complement of tutors. The program boasts its own Macintosh/IBM writing lab with access to the Internet as well as reference tools of the Homer Babbidge Library. Writing tutors are available each weeknight in the CPIA office. CPIA also provides laptop computers for team use during travel to away games. Individual tutors in all subjects are readily available to student-athletes upon request. A counselor is assigned to work with each intercollegiate team, and working directly with the UConn lacrosse program is Ingrid Hohmann. Hohmann monitors all aspects of each athlete’s academic life, including class schedule, arranging for tutors and progress toward a degree. The goal for each Husky student-athlete is to earn a degree so they can become a success in whatever field they choose.

The Department of Sports Medicine in the University of Connecticut Division of Athletics works as an integrated multidisciplinary team whose purpose is to provide the optimal, safe environment for each of UConn’s intercollegiate student-athletes to train and participate in their sport. The staff takes great pride in the individual attention paid to each student-athlete. The Sports Medicine staff is devoted to preventing injury, rapidly diagnosing and treating injury, and

maximizing athletic performance. The disciplines of athletic training, strength and conditioning, sports medicine, orthopaedic sports medicine, optometry, nutrition, exercise physiology, and psychology work in concert to provide comprehensive care for each student-athlete. The Sports Medicine team is spearheaded by UConn Director of Sports Medicine Jeffrey Anderson, MD, and UConn Team Physician Thomas Trojian, MD. The Orthopaedic Sports Medicine specialists for the team include Edward Collins, MD, in Willimantic and Michael Joyce, MD, of the Orthopaedic Sports Specialists in Glastonbury; Barry Messinger, MD, of Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Surgery in Manchester; and Robert Arciero, MD, and Kevin Shea, MD, of the University of Connecticut Health Center Department of Orthopaedics in Farmington. The Department of Sports Medicine works intimately with the Departments of Kinesiology and Nutritional Sciences on the University of Connecticut campus. This working relationship affords the student-athletes with the input of several nationally recognized exercise scientists. This cooperation also keeps the sports medicine staff at the cutting edge of developments in the fields of human performance and sports nutrition. Members of the UConn sports medicine staff are actively engaged in research that directly benefits the care of each student-athlete. The UConn Sports Medicine team is housed in state-of-the-art facilities in the Hugh S. Greer Field House and the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion, as well as a new and expanded sports medicine treatment center located in the UConn Football Facilities Building. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut administers to the daily needs of 600 male and female intercollegiate student-athletes who are competing in 24 different varsity programs. The Department of Sports Medicine at the University of Connecticut plays a critical role in assuring that all UConn student-athletes have 24-hour access to the finest medical support and quality health care possible. Through patient care and ongoing research and education, the department continues to provide Husky teams a competitive edge from the medical perspective.

The strength and conditioning program for the University of Connecticut lacrosse student-athletes is under the supervision of UConn Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Jerry Martin. The Strength and Conditioning staff services all 24 of Connecticut’s intercollegiate sports. UConn lacrosse players have the use of two different weight rooms in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion and the newly remodeled Hugh S. Greer Field House. In all, there are over 8,000 square feet of weight training facilities available for all UConn athletes. The weight room in the Harry A. Gampel Pavilion is a free weight facility and supplies the Husky players areas in which to perform their power and Olympic lifts. The facility in the Greer Field House is fitted with more free weights so that the UConn student-athletes can incorporate circuit training, speed training, and heavy negative workouts into their total strength training program. The staff supervises a strength and conditioning program for each individual athlete all year long. Each program can be manipulated in order to fulfill the specific needs of the individual. Specific testing is done to each player to monitor progress in strength, power, body composition, anaerobic conditioning, and flexibility. These tests provide the coaches and medical staff with an accurate athletic profile on each lacrosse player.

W hen the Town of Mansfield and the University of Connecticut

formed the Mansfield Downtown Partnership, Inc. over a decade ago, it was perhaps difficult to imagine a vibrant, walkable downtown in the heart of the Mansfield. But now, steps away from the Town Hall, Mansfield Community Center, E. O. Smith High School, and UConn’s School of Fine Arts, the beginnings of Storrs Center provide a tangible preview of good things to come in this college town!

Construction began on the first phase of Storrs Center with a cer-emonial groundbreaking on June 29, 2011. Governor Dannel P. Malloy, Mansfield Mayor Betsy Paterson, and UConn President Susan Herbst were on-hand to celebrate the culmination of many years of planning and the beginning of a new chapter in the Town-Gown relationship. Less than a year later, the first businesses opened the doors of their new homes: Storrs Automotive (11 Dog Lane) and Select Physical Therapy (9 Dog Lane, Suite 108) opened in Storrs Center in April.

The first phase of Storrs Center (Phase 1A) consists of 1 Dog Lane and 9 Dog Lane, which feature commercial uses on the first floors and rental apartments on the upper floors; the new Storrs Automotive in 11 Dog Lane; and a new parking garage. The rental apartments, The Oaks on the Square, were fully leased by the end of April 2012 and will open in mid-August 2012.

Businesses have lined up quickly for the new downtown. In 1 Dog Lane, visitors will find Dog Lane Café (from the owners of the Vanilla Bean

Café in Pomfret and 85 Main in Putnam), Froyoworld, Insomnia Cookies, Moe’s Southwest Grill, Mooyah Burger & Fries and Subway. Nine Dog Lane will be the home of Bank of America, Body Language, Geno’s (a new restaurant from UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma), Head Husky, Husky Pizza, Select Physical Therapy, Sweet Emotions Candy and Travel Planners. These businesses will all begin to open in mid-August.

Meanwhile, the next phase is already under construction. Phase 1B includes another mixed-use building, featuring commercial spaces and additional apartments from The Oaks on the Square, and the intermodal transportation center. Both of these buildings are being constructed adja-cent to the parking garage, which will open to the public in mid-August 2012. The Oaks on the Square will begin accepting applications for the apartments in September, but information is available now on their website: www.theoaksonthesquare.com.

The commercial spaces for Phase 1B are filling up as quickly as those in the first phase did. The UConn Co-op will open a new satellite location facing the Town Square while maintaining its existing location across the street from Gampel Pavillion. The UConn Co-op @ Storrs Center will feature general books, a children’s section, a café and much more. Negotiations for the remaining spaces are on-going; look for leases announcements on the Storrs Center website: www.storrscenter.com.

With market-rate housing, the town square, and a variety of businesses to appeal to all ages within walking distance of UConn and key civic uses, Storrs Center will be the community hub that Mansfield has long awaited.

For more informa-tion, please visit www.storrscenter.com or contact the Mansfield Downtown Partnership at 860-429-2740 or [email protected]. A list of Frequently Asked Questions is avail-able on the Partnership’s website, www.mans-fieldct.org/mdp.
